resin driveway – relatively new option

This is a question we get asked a lot. Resin driveway – relatively new option? the simple answer is no. I found this thread on the internet whilst researching our competitors (as you do). Just from the discussions online and comments it is clear to see how confusing information is available.

Resin is a highly versatile product and has been in use for a number of years. If you look at the dates on this forum you will be able to answer the question resin driveways – relatively new option – as these alone date back to 2010.

Some of the points raised and answered (not always correctly we will add) are as follows:

“We’ve got an ugly concrete driveway in front of our house, and for various reasons it isn’t practical at the moment to dig it all up and lay a new one.

I was looking around for any cheaper options, and I came across the idea of a resin bonded gravel layer on top of the concrete. It looks great in the pictures – does anyone have any real life experience?”

and

“Most applicators will want to start a fresh and pull up old concrete making it a bit expensive. They will want to give a warranty”

also

“You can DIY this. If the existing concrete is sound, then its just a matter of scrapping off any loose stuff, filling any dips or holes and then coating.

You can get the resin, binder and top coats from various online suppliers and the gravel or whatever can be sourced locally if you like. You may need to buy some special rakes or squeegees or mixing paddles for the application, but it will still be all cheaper than getting a firm in. It really is not that hard or “specialist”

“You may get at least 10-15 years out of it, may be much more, as it depends on the prevalent weather that the drive gets, and the sun breaking down the resin bond. Good drainage is a must.

Another problem for drives, is that cars tend to be driven in the same place, and wheels turned in the same spot, and so particular areas may get more wear and degrade sooner. But that’s not to say that as a whole, the surface wont last long.

Prepare the base well, apply it properly and it can be one of the best looking drives you can get – especially if you incorporate some other paving, and think about the design a little”

Some true facts but also some misconceptions. How do you distinguish? Can you be confident that a resin driveway – relatively new option – is installed correctly?

Have a look around our website, lots of information for you to peruse and even more important it is free to talk!

Whatever your thoughts it is a more cost effective option than block paving. It it a lot speedier to install than block paving. A resin driveway path or patio has anti slip properties not offered with imprinted concrete.

Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and Yorkshire all within easy distance. Free quotes and honest answers. Chesterfield, Ollerton, Southwell, Clipstone – we can show you resin bonded gravel and resin bonded stone works we have completed in these areas. Resin bonded paths and resin bonded patios . Concrete, tarmac or imprinted concrete we can resurface and complete in most cases within a day.

Mansfield Woodhouse Nottinghamshire enquiry received for resin bonded stone aka resin bonded aggregate

This gentleman had a mix of driveway surfaces – concrete and tarmac and a hardcore section. He had contacted us to find out if we could help.

With the wonders of the internet and a brief discussion we are able to establish the feasibility of this and unforntuately this was too far deteriorated for us to be able to help.

On looking at the image online we could clearly see that a complete rip out would be required.

Whilst our resin bonded stone aka resin bonded aggregate is a quick and speedy installation as it uses existing surfaces – resin bonded stone aka resin bonded aggregate is not a one shoe fits all option though. Unfortunately.

Being based in the East Midlands we are able to access four counties easily from our base – Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire, Derbyshire and Yorkshire. Chesterfield, Mansfield, Ripley, Swanwick, Heanor, Derby, Sheffield, Kirkby in Ashfield we can access all of these areas.

Out to show a few of our ideas to a new garden design project in Nottinghamshire. This client has quite definite ideas which enables us to get a basic starting point.

Sunday morning meeting with our Nottinghamshire client. Part of the brief is to keep and incorporate some of the original trees and shrubs that are overgrown and neglected. A patio possibly to complete in honed slate slabs. Our ideas such as a 2 tier level, set with recessed led lighting. To set lawn to some some areas but bordered out in natural stone setts . Possibly to form pathways which we can then resurface in resin bonded stone aka resin bonded aggregate in a grey bauxite finish that will work well with slate.

A raised bed could be installed which may help cut costs when it comes to the removal of any removed materials as it could be used for drainage for the bed. Mirrored screens could be considered to mask a vegetable plot but to also reflect back into the garden area.

All at an early stage but a very interesting project to work on.

Resin bonded stone aka resin bonded aggregate is fairly new alternative to the driveway sector for the residential sector. However it is fast becoming a popular durable, weed and maintenance free option that can protect and extend the life of your existing surface.

Radcliffe on Trent, Gamston, Tollerton, Colwick, Gedling, Arnold, West Bridgford call us now to find works we have completed near you.

resin bonded gravel driveways Mansfield Mid June works in progress to complete two

Weather has been very variable over the last few days. Two resin bonded gravel driveways being on the agenda so we have had to really develop a game plan – and change it – on an hourly basis. Such is the way it goes.

Two Mansfield resin jobs on the go this week. Very rare are we able to bring together two resin bonded gravel driveways for completion at the same time, in Mansfield within a 5 mile radius. Fortunately as the weather has been playing a few tricks on us – it has been timed just right.

The first of our resin bonded gravel driveways is a resurfacing of a tarmac skim coat which is on top of an old concrete slope. The finish required was to protect, extend and improve the appearance and access to this property.

Not a large job but one that certainly will be improved. This surface is certainly a rough one, but as you will see when it is completed, it improves the appearance of the driveway totally. Our resin bonded gravel driveways option allows completion in a day. The surface we install will offer a weed free and anti slip impermeable surface . No weeds will be able to get a hold!

The 2nd Mansfield job on the agenda is a little more detailed. This concrete driveway and path around the perimeter of the property is in a reasonable condition. Our client was originally wanting block paving, thinking that his only alternative was to remove the existing surface. Then he found out about our resin bonded gravel resurfacing option. They have chosen a diamond design for their driveway which I will put images on and you will be able to see from the images.

Quotes this week have been Lincoln, Farnsfield and Ambergate. All our clients and enquiries are particular to their needs and requirements, but also have to be assessed individually, as the existing surface can dictate what we can and cannot do. Our resin bonded gravel driveways option is not for everyone – only today we have had an enquiry from Mansfield Woodhouse and this client has nothing down. However, we can install concrete in this case and whilst it may not have the attractiveness of a resin bonded gravel drive, we use existing surfaces such as concrete, tarmac, imprinted concrete and in some cases slabs. Due to their solid construction ( if laid correctly) they are perfect base. Quoting at Kirkby in Ashfield later this week, so have really been very local! Whether it is Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire or Yorkshire call us now. Don’t wait till the bad weather returns.

Driveway resurfacing with Resin Bonded Paving

Busy week last week out to view this Swadlincote concrete surface (Leicestershire and Derbyshire border) to quote and funny enough another quote come in less than 3 miles away so managed to bring that one in to quote as well (tarmac this one though). Seems quite a popular area and it is funny how we seem to get pockets of enquiries for our resin bonded aggregate. The enquiries seem to vary a bit with the time of year – resin bonded patios are quite popular at present.

We have been trying to prepare our Gainsborough job ( easily accessible from our base in Mansfield) but rain has stopped play, which is how it goes. Been out to Ollerton for a quote on a community area, quite a large tarmac one and out to Grantham at the end of week.

Calverton Nottingham on the agenda in a couple of weeks, recommended by a previous Matlock customer. Funny how these recommendations seem to come in quite a few years later. Perhaps it allows people to see how the driveway resurfacing wears and obviously by the recommendations/referrals coming through it is working!

The Calverton Nottinghamshire driveway has a bit of an issue with the water run off and he is currently dealing with a builder as well, so his intention is to sort all at once, which is probably the right thing to do. As we have said before permeability of hard standing areas is not a necessary, the control of run off water is. Your driveway path or patio can be part of your overall garden design.

Lads will try Thursday for preparation. As the preparation work is quite minimal on disruption, even if the weather is not too kind, we only need a little window of opportunity for this.

The Gainsborough job should be completed Friday but if not the our team will work Saturday to finish this driveway resurfacing with Resin Bonded Paving . We like to keep to dates if we can as if not this has a knock on effect and can cause issues with our waiting list. We currently have an order list but we do try and “fit in” if a customer is eager for a particular time.

Tarmac driveways and the problems you can encounter

Whilst researching competitors on the Internet ( and we do – what is it they say keep your friends close and enemies even closer!) we came across this feedback extract on a “lead generator” website

“Tarmac at the side and front of the property. Replace quarry tile steps.

The trades person was initially requested to do 2 jobs. The first was to dig out a lawned area at the side of the garage, provide edging, hard core, base coat tarmac and finish tarmac. The second job was to take out 2 quarry tile steps at the front door and replace. The replacement used standard square edge and the riser was set proud of the tread. An uneven joint is showing on the edge. This joint is likely to suffer from water ingress and consequent damage. It starts with a full tile on one side and finishes with a part tile on the other. The second step has also been set out with a full tile from one edge but it is a shorter step. This means that the joints in the steps are out of line by about 30 mm. The steps were set and grouted, The cement grout was not cleaned off at the time. Another job was requested to remove tarmac from the front drive and to relay. The work was carried out the next day when no-one was in. The original tarmac was not removed. A layer of tarmac was laid over the existing driveway. This is higher than all of the other adjacent surfaces. I could not open the garage door before removing some tarmac. The trades person insisted that the work was of a satisfactory standard and offered a guarantee. Customer in Mansfield, 27 March 2013 business”

Now to be fair this sounds a technical complaint so how valid is it? The same as the references on these “lead generator” companies how valid are they?

To get the right man (or in our case the right business) for the job is very important. If your concrete or tarmac is in poor condition it does not mean you have to remove it! Driveways can be part of your garden! Make your patios and paths a pleasure to look at.

One of the biggest differences with what we use – Resin Bonded Stone or Resin Bonded Aggregate as it is also known- is the fact that it uses existing surfaces such as concrete, block paving (but only on limited areas) , imprinted concrete and in some cases slabs, Obviously if an additional surface is required, then we can extend and then resurface providing a uniformity for your driveway. It does not affect existing levels but does offer a very high level of durability and extends the life of what you already have. And very importantly it is anti slip. Permeability a consideration? Is it necessary? Call us and we can advise you. Tarmac driveways and the problems you can encounter – let us help.

We are based in Mansfield in the East Midlands and have access to Nottingham, Derby, Leicester, Lincoln with easy access to the M1 we border the counties Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Lincolnshire and Yorkshire and cover areas such asBestwood Village, Boughton, Calverton, Chilwell, Codnor, Daybrook, Elston, Gleadless, Kirklees, Louth, Mickleover, Normanton on Trent, Ollerton.

Blidworth Resin Bonded Aggregate works for uniformity

Completed a resin bonded aggregate driveway towards the end of last year at Blidworth Nottinghamshire. Whilst completing the driveway works their neighbour asked for a price at the same time. We have now received the order to complete the resin bonded aggregate works for them.

This client needs some concrete works first so we need to complete these and allow them to cure. The reason being the alkali’s need to be allowed to wash out and depending on the time of year this can take between 6 to 8 weeks.

The resin we use is a very specialist product and preparation for any resurfacing is key. That is not say to that all surfaces old or new are suitable for the resin. This particular client wants additional works completing so we are currently negotiating a price to complete the ground works (an additional section is required) Once these are in place we can look toward resurfacing with our resin bonded aggregate and once completed and resurfaced with our resin a uniformity of surface will be achieved.

We need to re visit this client to re establish, clarify and amend any previous prices ( if necessary, however we do try and maintain a level of continuity on price where possible).

We are hoping to get out later this week and reassess. We will call at the original resin bonded aggregate works and just check over the works as we like to check on all our works.

Also today we had an enquiry from a gentleman Kinoulton and he has “bays” of tarmac installed. Not something we see a lot of so will be interesting to see this. Will be contacting them in the next few days and will be out to view. Also recent enquiry from Heanor once again for resurfacing a tarmac driveway.

The elements have really taken their toll on some tarmac surfaces – the freeze/thaw effect together with the aggressive nature of our gritting process. Concrete can be included in this as well as shelling can develop.

Due to the benefits of the Internet we are able search online if required and provide a “guesstimate” so a ball park figure can be provided on any works we complete. We did have one of our callers say that they had already had a quote for Resin Bound works. The indication by this competitor of ours was that the water would run underneath the Resin Bound paving (as it is porous) but we would not advocate this. With our resin bonded aggregate works water cannot permeate and this reinforces the strength of the surface.

For an innovative alternative to the usual block paving, concrete, imprinted concrete, tarmac or block paving resurface your existing driveway, path or patio.

Resin Bonded Aggregate – What is it? Can I use it on my driveway, path or patio?

Resin Bonded Aggregate is an anti skid surfacing product which uses a combination of resin and aggregates hence the Resin Bonded Aggregate name.

It provides a durable and protective resurfacing option for your driveway path and patio and is applied as a rule to tarmac, concrete and imprinted concrete. Resin Bonded Aggregate can provide a weed free option as it prevents the ingress of water.

Our supplier of aggregates has developed a range of products that can give bright vibrant colours, more natural tones or a specialist mix which can be chosen to suit. These Aggregates are selected from quarries throughout the UK and Europe. The choice and range available has been developed over the past 25 years and whilst not an exhaustive selection here are some options available

Resin Bonded Aggregate systems need an existing base or surface typically tarmac, asphalt, concrete known as a monolithic material.

This is required as the application of resin in a Resin Bonded Aggregate system is spread over the existing surface and then has the chosen aggregate applied.

The driveway, path or patio does have to be assessed and one shoe does not fit all. For example we have been out to view drives where the actual substrate or core is not structurally sound and as a result of this we have not been able to work with the resin on the existing surface.

The cleaning and preparation of the surfaces should be a very important aspect. Not only is the Resin Bonded Aggregate relying on the soundness of the existing concrete or tarmac surface, it is important that the surface is cleaned properly with all loose materials and dust removed and sealed if necessary. Any contaminates such as oil need to be removed as does the removal of any algae. If not removed this can affect the efficacy of the application.

As specialist installers of over 12 years experience, we can discuss your requirements.

Resin Bonded Gravel and Resin Bonded Aggregate providing an alternative to the usual options for your driveway path or patio. If it’s not broke don’t fix it.

We are based in Nottinghamshire but accessible to Yorkshire and Derbyshire areas. We have completed anti slip surfacing in Skegby, Aspley, Barnby Dun, Bilsthorpe, Bulwell, Cheadle Hulme, Clay Cross, Cotgrave,Doncaster, Fleckney, Huthwaite, Leamington Spa, Mansfield Woodhouse, New Houghton, Northampton, Pentrich, Peterborough, Ravenshead, Sellers Wood, Shirebrook, Spalding, Sutton Bonnington, Toton, Warsop, Worksop

Resin Drive Can it work for your Driveway Path or Patio ?

Resin drives are a fairly new option in the residential market place but we have been installing Resin Drives and Resin Paths and Patios for in excess of 12 years.

We aim to work with existing surfaces such as tarmac, concrete and imprinted concrete.

Why?

Well if it’s not broke don’t fix it!. All too often we as homeowners think the only alternative is to remove what can seem to be a defective driveway path or patio such as tarmac or concrete. Or if an additional surface is required a uniformity of surface is what is required and we think the only choice is to remove the existing

In both these cases Resin Bonded Gravel can be applied. Resin Bonded Gravel can extend the life of an existing concrete, tarmac or imprinted concrete surface providing a durable, anti slip attractive Resin Drive path or patio.

Resin Bonded gravel can also incorporate new and old surfaces to provide a uniformity to your driveway path or patio

Tarmac is having a lot of issues at the moment due to the amount of water, and the freeze thaw effect which can damage tarmac quite aggressively potholes are a prime example.

As with a lot of external surfaces if they are not maintained then deterioration can be rapid. This is where Resin Bonded Aggregate can help.

Due to the impermeable qualities of the product, water cannot get though so it cannot freeze. Therefore the freeze thaw effect will not damage the Resin Bonded gravel surface. This also means a virtually weed free surface.

During our 12 years we have seen an upsurge in the interest and demand for Resin Bonded and Resin Bound choices and an upsurge in the companies working within Resin Drive sector.

A Resin Drive

can be

Completed in a day

No mess

No Disruption

No skips

Drive on the same day

A selection of some of the regions where we can work include Yorkshire, Leicestershire and Lincolnshire.

Towns local to us for example Nottingham, Mansfield, Arnold, Bakewell, Bilborough, Bramcote, Caunton, Church Warsop, Corby, Diseworth, Forest Town, Hucknall, Langwith Junction, Mansfield, Mosley, North Wingfield, Oxton, Ratcliffe on Trent, Scunthorpe, Sherwood, South Normanton, Stretton, Tollerton,Walton, Willerby, Woodthorpe.
