Resin path preparation works can vary from surface to surface considering various aspects i.e condition, whether it is concrete or tarmac and even the position of the path.

Preparation works are key to the longevity and quality of the resin bonded resurfacing install. The prep work can regulate, strengthen and protect the existing surface (concrete, tarmac, imprinted concrete all having different dictates) and this in turn ensures the resin application is correctly installed.
All surfaces such as tarmac, concrete and imprinted concrete (solid and monolithic) have a certain amount of porosity, permeability and unevenness and the preparation works can make or break a resurfacing application. What is also key is the existing surface – how structurally sound is this? Is it just superficially damaged, are there tree roots affecting the area? These can all affect the efficacy of a resin install. It is a little like when you paint something, you may need to sand the surface and clean it to ensure the best bond between the existing surface and the new paint applied. With a driveway path or patio a “key” surface is also a necessary.

Part of our resin path preparation work involves using a rapid setting specialist waterproof filler and levelling compound. Why you may ask? Resin is quite a complex but versatile product but if used with unsuitable products can react, which in turn creates a lack of adhesion. We need to ensure that any cracks and holes in the concrete or tarmac are filled prior to the application. Resin path preparation work can differ from driveway prep work. A path is for foot traffic and therefore has a lesser strength requirement in comparison to a driveway which (usually) takes a vehicle weight.
As with all our works a site visit is a must. We can always provide an approximate cost but we would need to view the existing surface. Free quotes. A recent enquiry asking for details on a price was outside our area of work. However with over 14 years experience we are quite  happy to provide resin surface information as follows:

“Can you supply an approx quote  for resin bound?  I have a triangle drive Approx 6.7x 8.2 x 8.6m.  Currently it is tarmac on hardcore (good condition)  with tar/lose chips on top. I live in the South of England”

We replied as follows with the following resin surface information

“Hi

Apologies for the delay. We are based in Mansfield Nottinghamshire so you are too far for us to be able to complete works. Based on the details you have provided you are looking at approximately 60 sqm  so if you were to base this on a price of £70 per sqm ( I have allowed for a higher charge for your area)

You would be looking at just over £4k for this area

 Can I just point out though if you put porous (which resin bound is) on to non porous (which tarmac is) where does the water sit when it permeates through the bound?

There are a few things to consider when completing resurfacing works and with regard to existing surfaces.

•  New surfaces can affect the existing levels

• If a permeable is added to an impermeable  how does this affect porosity.

• Is the surface subject to moss and algae increasing slipperiness and weed growth

• Do you need to have a low maintenance surface ?

• If a porous surface is used will it take the weight of a vehicle.

We would resurface (if the surface is suitable ) with resin bonded as opposed to resin bound for a number of reasons

•  It uses existing surfaces as the support  for the weight of traffic

• It does not affect existing levels

• It is not subject to moss and algae or weed growth and is anti slip.

• Is virtually maintenance free

• It is an impermeable surface

There are national companies who may be able to help, and it is always wise to ask for an example of works completed in the area.  www.sureset.co.uk and www.ronacrete.co.uk  and Addagrip  are 3 I can think of immediately.

If you were to look at resin bonded  you should be looking at a lesser cost but it is actually a more durable product (originally road surface spec)

Can these really be true facts –   weed, puddle, maintenance free driveways ?   It would be nice to say yes to but if you consider the fact that our driveways paths and patio surfaces can be subject to massive deluges of water for example,  it would be hard to say categorically yes.

We have recently received an online request for a guide price  and some resin installation help and we have provided the following

“Hello      Apologies for not getting back to you earlier.  I have asked Simon to provide an approximate price but there are various factors to consider.  For example where you are, access to the area  and  finish required for example.  As an approximate and based on the dimensions provided  to install a base for the resin you would be looking in the region of £2160.00 and approximately £2268.00  to install the resin bonded stone.  I am not sure if you are aware that there are two types of resin – resin bonded aggregate and resin bound aggregate.  Both use the same materials  but in different quantities and both with different installation processes.    We primarily work with resin bonded stone or aggregate as it is also known, because it is virtually maintenance free and anti slip.  Resin bound paving requires maintenance (moss and weeds can get a hold as it is porous) so it needs a careful watch for weeds with the usual weed killer products required  and it is not anti slip as resin bonded.  It is also more expensive for resin bound installations as the resin encapsulates the  aggregate and needs to be installed to a greater depth.  Feel free to have a look round our website    with a bit of info on the options available.  From the details you have supplied I am not sure where you are based –  but if you are within our area and  would like a free no obligation quote or would like any further details, then feel free to give us a call”
