For a fresh new and extended driveway resin bonded stone can provide uniformity and a durable quality to an otherwise limiting access. This Mansfield client wanted to extend and incorporate more hard standing area so we completed this Mansfield driveway resin refurbishment. We could say completed in a day but that would be untrue as we had to extend the area first.

possible driveway surface solutions

As the start of the season begins we thought we would remind everyone of the possible driveway surface solutions available. Obviously when we say driveway we include paths and patios in this subject.

Resin Bonded Stone

Resin Bound Paving

Block paving

Imprinted concrete

Tarmac

Concrete

No one surface is the ideal, especially if the subject matter is external. Whilst we in the UK are not subject to severe weather conditions as a whole, we still need to be respectful of elements which can create the need for possible driveway surface solutions.

The freeze thaw effect which has not had much effect this year, is the main cause of surface deterioration with tarmac and concrete. Potholes and shelling being obvious evidence of the how the weather can damage our driveways paths and patios. That said the surface damage is generally superficial and if treated or protected soon enough further deterioration will not occur.

Resin bonded stone and resin bound paving very often confused as the same ( which they are definitely not), block paving, imprinted concrete, tarmac and concrete are all possible options but it should be realised there is a downside to all external surfacing. It may be a maintenance option is necessary (block paving and imprinted concrete for example). We always recommend all possible driveway surface solutions are considered carefully. Consider why you need to address the area, or if it is just a cosmetic solution you required.

[See image gallery at www.drive-cote.co.uk] We try to provide the pro’s and cons with all our clients. As a Mansfield based company we aim to offer honest advice. For example consider what is already down and the purpose for what you are considering possible driveway surface solutions for – is it to protect? Is it to look attractive? Is it a necessary finish? Do you want a choice of colour?

Remember you do not have to resurface in in one go your driveway path or patio area can be an organic development and can even create kerb appeal.

Quotes often highlight various points so we thought we would give some information on – does resin bonded stone aka resin bonded aggregate differ from resin bound stone?

Consider

price differences

the installation process

the reason why the client wants resurfacing with resin bonded or resin bound stone

and in the long term the efficacy.

A concern of a Newark client was the fact that the tarmac he had did have a certain amount of “unevenness” . This created his question does resin bonded stone aka resin bonded aggregate differ from resin bound stone? And how the two resurfacing options – resin bonded stone and resin bound stone would work. He wasn’t concerned in general about the dips and undulations as being a large area it would be difficult to eliminate them. He was curious to see the differences.

So to answer the question – does resin bonded stone aka resin bonded aggregate differ from resin bound stone?

A particular resin bound stone company who were providing a quote to this client explained that their process would be to level the surface by way of varying degrees of depth. This is according to the “dips” in the surface. As an example in a lesser dipped area there would be a depth of approximately 10mm. This would increase to 18mm in deeper areas tapering down to 8mm on to the optimum level. It would also still allow the ingress of water. As the existing is a tarmac surface impermeable where does the water go?

With our resin bonded resurfacing we resurface the whole area with an approximate overall depth of 5mm. This offers an even and durable surface without affecting existing levels. This continues to use the substrate as the surface for the weight of a vehicle.

How do we deal with the dips and undulations? We have a specialist filler, which we hand apply. We do not eliminate the dips and undulations on a driveway path or patio, what we do is serve to reduce these dips and undulations. If clients have puddle areas, these can be highlighted and these areas filled on a lightly heavier level

The fact that a surface is sound structurally and solid is key to our resurfacing. We work to protect, extend and ensure continued longevity and durability of a surface.

Another key point to remember when asking – does resin bonded stone aka resin bonded aggregate differ from resin bound stone – resin bonded stone is impermeable and resin bound stone is permeable.

If a permeable resin bound stone is applied to an impermeable surface like tarmac and concrete what happens to surface water which is stored between the two surfaces? So if you want the surface protected and don’t want to affect existing levels resin bonded is the answer.

Price difference for the question does resin bonded stone aka resin bonded aggregate differ from resin bound stone? Yes there is a price difference or at least their should be.

Resin bound stone encapsulates the granules and is applied via a trowelled application, therefore uses more resin (the most expensive aspect) and therefore should be more expensive. This makes this a less aggressive surface and therefore less anti slip so does resin bonded stone aka resin bonded aggregate differ from resin bound stone? the answer to this is yes.

With regard to efficacy? it does depend on the surface and the need. An impermeable resin bonded application would not be right for a tree pit – this needs the ingress of water. This is where a resin bound application would be ideal.

Driveways paths and patios and gardens are all encompassing nowadays. With the products available your driveway can be an integral part of your who home. Imprinted concrete tarmac and block paving and slabs are products we can work with. Call us for a free quote. Mansfield Nottinghamshire based means we are within easy reach of Mansfield Kirkby in Ashfield, Nottingham, Sheffield Chesterfield, Kirkby in Ashfield, Selston, Ravenshead.

driveway surface option resin bonded aggregate

Tuesday we visited a potential client in Worksop Nottinghamshire. Their old concrete driveway was not really in too bad a condition. Just old and unsightly. The client had completed some work online to establish what driveway surface option they could consider. Resin bonded gravel had come up as an alternative. This client also had concrete paths to the side elevation of the property which they were also considering sorting out.

Imprinted concrete

Tarmac

Concrete

Block paving

Paving slabs

Grass

Our client didn’t want the maintenance requirements with a driveway surface option of block paving. Weeds and a seal coat being issued. This client had looked at other alternative options such as imprinted concrete for example. The fact that this would also require a seal coat on a regular basis to maintain and ensure longevity put this client off. Driveway surface options all have a down side in some way. External surfaces have to be able to withstand the Winters. Tarmac and concrete were considered but at the back of this client’s mind, they did not want the mess and disruption involved with a brand new installation. We quoted to resurface with our resin bonded aggregate finish in 2-5mm resin bonded stone golden pea.

The garden element to this driveway was also a consideration as now with so many permeable options being available water management needs to be a consideration. With the resin bonded resurfacing options we always look at the wider picture not just the driveway surface options. The garden being a consideration together with drainage.

For a free and honest opinion call Mansfield Drive-Cote Ltd. Over 12 years experience of working with driveways, paths and patios and have an anti slip durable and attractive finish.

Resin bonded resurfacing is a weed free and maintenance free option for existing surfaces like concrete, tarmac, imprinted concrete and in some cases paving slabs. So whether it is a resin bonded path, resin bonded patio or resin bonded driveway, call us now for a free no obligation chat.

Resin Bonded aggregate works for this local university

Called out to quote for a local Nottingham builder who has a contract possibility for resin bonded aggregate works for this local university. Thursday 25 July 2013 was the date we set – so met up for the site meeting and he took us a tour round. It is a very large site full of areas requiring varying degrees of work – from concrete to tarmac and slabbing. From complete rip outs to minor repairs and remedials.

This resin bonded aggregate works for this local university was for the application of resin bonded stone to a road way entrance. This entrance was for access to a restricted area on the university campus. Whilst not requiring a heavy duty application for this resin bonded aggregate works, an ability to withstand regular traffic is certainly a requirement.

Not a large job for the resin bonded aggregate works for this local university, but a need on their part due to the restricted access and the resin will highlight this to the road user.

Whilst there we did notice areas of resin bonded aggregate which had been laid previously and we gather this was via a commercial national installer but we are not aware of who.

On close inspection we are of the opinion that it had been poorly laid. There were lots of runs . This can happen when the resin is applied at a high temperature and management of the application for the resin bonded aggregate works is not dealt as well as it should be.

In addition there were ridges and signs of the resin bubbling through and the aggregate used is not a size we would advocate. We believe it was 1-3 Autumn Gold which is far too fine in our opinion. It had the appearance of sand. Due to the regular car and lorry traffic it was slowly being reduced to dust. Also the finer the stone the less impact with regard to the anti slip properties, but then that is not always a priority for the client or circumstance.

However, we were not there to quote for this, but it is quite interesting to see the difference between installers both commercial and residential with regard to resin bonded gravel installations.

Will be writing this up for the builder later and hopefully, he may be in with a shout.

This Nottingham builder has completed quite a number of commercial contracts including local authority works over a number of years and this is how he had found Drive-Cote – as we are listed as registered installers of resin bonded aggregate works.

Been watching the tv with Alan Tichmarsh. The resin bound gravel installation on a garden path looked really impressive when finished. We did notice that it was a resin bound gravel installation and only laid on concrete quite minimally. We personally, as a business would use a compacted hardcore/drainage type base as a resin bound gravel installation is porous. However as it was only applied on quite a minimal depth, the porosity would probably not be an issue.

What a mix of colours though, that is quite impressive. Out to Worksop to look at a patio. This particular enquiry has already had a resin bound patio, which he is very happy about but he has another concrete area to resurface.

Simon will be out to quote later in the week. Resin bonded gravel installation and a resin bound gravel installation either is both possible, it will all depend on the surface currently down and whether it is a path, driveway or patio.

If there something down, then depending on the porosity of the existing as to whether it will be a resin bound gravel installation or a resin bonded gravel installation.

Also went out to see a patio enquiry which currently has carpet stone down.

It would be a shame to be honest to actually cover it up. It still looked in a real good condition and really all that would be required would be a mix of sand and cement brushed into the area and then a spray of water to set it.

Leave to dry and hey presto done. Howwever this Mansfield client was keen to remove this. As we say one of the benefits of our resin bonded applications is the non permeable, eliminating the weeds. However it is designed to resurface existing which needs attention. When you see a good servicecable and correctly installed and attractive surface why cover it up?

Yes this will still need some some maintenance but compared to some surfaces and in particular block paving, this was very minimal.

With the seasonal glut of garden programs the regular use of resin is becoming more widespread. Lincolnshire, Leicestershire and Derbyshire and whether it is a path patio or driveway, the options are variable. Call Drive-Cote Ltd now for more information for a weed free, anti slip low maintenance but attractive and durable option for your garden. If you have tarmac, concrete or imprinted concrete and in some cases paving slabs, we can resurface. Visit our showcase for a gallery of works completed

Nottinghamshire Resin driveway recommendation

“Hi Faith
The young men were clean, tidy, polite and worked well . We are very pleased with the result. Already received several positive comments. Will recommend your work to anyone who enquires. A company to be trusted. Wish all Companies were of your standard. Cheers
Kind regards Heather”

How nice is that recommendation and testimonial ! We aim to please. Not just with our Resin driveway service but with our business attitude in general. I read somewhere many years ago a saying “you are only as good as your worst workman. What more can I say!

This Nottinghamshire resin driveway recommendation is presented on our website as a credit to our hardworking staff.

In this current business climate we are all competing hard for business. With the marvels of the internet this has enabled us to complete driveway, paths and patios within the Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Sherffield, Chesterfield, Newark and Derby areas (just to name some).

Concrete, tarmac, imprinted concrete and slabs are all existing surfaces that we can work with. Perhaps you would like to incorporate you resin driveway path or patio into your garden design.

This is a Mansfield resin path and garden project and you can see where we are incorporating a curve detail. Call us now and let us improve your garden and driveway.

Maintenance free

Anti slip

A weed free and anti slip surface which can enhance your garden. Patios are prone to deterioration over a period of time, this is where our resin can transform your outdoor space.

In this current climate the moisture and damp is a breeding ground for weeds. Only today June 13th have I seen the ever chanaging weather – sunshine and showers – hail being a part of it. With our impermeable surface, if water cannot get down weeds cannot get up. No backbreaking weeding.

The benefit of a resin driveway path or patio cannot be said of block paving and imprinted concrete!

A recent report in the Mansfield Chad reported a problem with the installation of a block paved drive

Was this a concrete or tarmac drive we could have resurfaced? We won’t know, but what we do know is that our resin bonded resurfacing would not create a situation like this, as it doesn’t require the removal of the existing surface.

Part of the report was that this particular installer was deemed to be a rogue as the report states “the driveways were often of a poor design with inadequate drainage and foundations and used weak cement to hold the block paving together” and one of the key important aspects of a driveway is to be able to take the weight of a vehicle. Obviously if your requirement is for a path or a patio it may not be as relevant but ensuring the right product for the right purpose is.

Preparation of the surface is key.

Laying block paving is an art and a skill. Sub grade, kerbs, edge courses, bedding layer, paving layer and compaction are all points to be considered.

The report continued to say “He has so far spent £500 to improve drainage on the patio but both the driveway and patio will need to be ripped up and redone.

He said: “I feel I’ve been completely taken for a ride. I’m no fool as I was once a salesman and a magistrate but I was completely taken in by his pressurised sales techniques. He came across as a professional as he had all the right equipment and an official looking van. He added that he will now investigate traders and ask to see their work”

Work was also carried out for their neighbour who paid £3,500 for a new tarmac drive which has had to be redone”.

If drainage is an issue we can address this. It does not always require removal of an existing surface to resolve this. Concerns over the requirements of planning permission we can help! And don’t forget for patio areas in some cases we can resurface slabs.

We have been completing resin drives for over 12 years, and can provide you with examples of our work in the East Midlands – Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire areas. Selston, Hucknall, Newark, Mansfield, Nottingham, Derby, Ilkeston,. South Normanton, Tupton, Clipstone, Mansfield Woodhouse, Chesterfield, Kirkby in Ashfield. Call us now to find a local job near you. Call us now to see the benefit of a resin driveway path or patio near you.

driveway path and patio resin bonded gravel

Quotes coming through from Chesterfield, Clipstone , Sheffield and Bestwood Park! All wanting our resin bonded gravel for their driveway path and patio.

Good job our suppliers are of a quality and efficient beyond compare. Always willing to help at short notice and really quality products supplied. We have used our existing resin supplier for a number of years and they have never failed to deliver on time or provide a less then superior product. Advancements with resin bonded gravel and resin bound paving have really developed over the years and certainly with the increasing popularity of the product. Recently used at the Olympic Park on a massive scale. Mainly resin bound in these areas as for foot traffic.

Out to quote a job at Mapperley – this one is a commercial job. Currently they have a concrete base but have been required to install ant- slip surfacing so they are looking for the resin bonded stone option. Garden project really coming in to view now. Rain last week so our large Matlock job was put on hold but completed now. The wet and damp is not a problem for the preparation work but it is for the actual installation of the resin bonded resurfacing. This coupled with the Matlock being very rural a lot of areas can be very slow on drying out so we have to make sure the surface we are working with is perfect and optimum.

driveway path and patio resin bonded gravel is the way to go.

No mess

No disruption

Can be completed in a day

This applies to driveway path and patio!

More garden work on the go this week, that is the benefit of a good garden project it can sustain you not just financially but emotionally

Out to re look at the Blidworth and and Mansfield driveway concrete jobs waiting for the final finish of resin bonded stone. Will take some pictures to update on that.

Went out to view a drive at Calverton. Unfortunately not suitable for our product.

It was 30 year old tarmac which had suffered the weight of a recovery vehicle during the past 20 years. This utility vehicle had caused the tarmac to sink possibly because use and structure on a residential is not necessarily the same as a commercial or industrial type.

Drainage issues were also present – the ruts were holding water. The customer has enlisted the services of a builder to extend the driveway to the side so that his current vehicle could be maneuvered on his driveway. The area where he lived was very dense with traffic hence his wanting to increase the hard standing area on his driveway.

We tend to find that a lot of patio enquiries are relative to slabs and this is a perfect scenario to use resin bonded resurfacing or resin bound. Foot traffic is always suitable for either product. It is only the existing surface that dictates. We do regularly get asked if we can work with block paving drives but unfortunately that is not possible.

Nottinghamshire or Derbyshire, Leicesteershire or Lincolnshire call us now and see if we can help.

Stocksbridge visit for a free resin bonded gravel quote

Called out to visit a client out at Stocksbridge hopefully calling for a visit to an enquiry at Clay Cross as well on the way back.

This client was obtaining 3 different quotes for resin bonded gravel and resin bound gravel. This was for a tarmac drive, path and patio.

The two other quotes had already been provided, but this client was a little concerned over the fact that ourselves and one of the other companies quoting , confirmed what we said on inspection but the third company differed. We said on the existing surface it would not be possible to apply our product.

The sub base had gone ( I am not sure where but it had definitely gone!)

The driveway was on a steep slope towards the property.

There were big dips in the tarmac all the levels were wrong.

Slabbed area of path around the property was extremely uneven and loose and had a back drop towards the property.

We explained that we would have to rip put the base and lay a brand new surface (as we work with resin bonded gravel) before we could apply the resin bonded aggregate. Which for a brand new surface and total re lay is a bit of a contradiction as we work on the understanding if it’s not broke don’t fix it. However some surfaces are broke as was this one!

One of the other companies which confirmed what we said about not being able to work with the surface and said their process would be to rip out the existing. They would then install a base coat of tarmac for drainage and trowel on and lay 16 to 18 ml thick of resin bound stone ( £97 per sqm).

Their works are different to our application and they did say that the resin bound stone would need cleaning and a moss inhibitor used. This is because resin bound stone is encapsulated with the resin and trowelled on to give a porosity. However with porosity comes the potential for moss, weeds and algae and for it to be slippy.

Because resin bonded stone is installed differently this results in there not being a problem with moss ,weeds and algae and it is an anti slip product.

The third driveway company said the surface was suitable and that they would install a 10mm overlay no problem. In our opinion this would not be a realistic option just on the fact that the sub base was not solid.
