There are a number of points  to consider

What is the existing surface?

Concrete? Tarmac? Imprinted concrete? Slabs? Block paving?

How stable is the existing surface?

Has it been down for a number of years? Are there any cracks?

Will or do you require it for  vehicle or foot traffic use?

Stability and support being paramount for this question

Is it for residential or commercial purposes?

In other words  high or low volume and use.

Resin driveway (or path and patio) stability will have a major impact on whether a resin driveway is for you bearing in mind the purpose of the works. In addition it will also have an impact on the longevity of any work completed.

Resin bonded surfacing uses an existing surface and therefore resin driveway ground stability is key.

Concrete as an example is a quality substrate.  Consider where it is used commercially- roads pavements, buildings, bridges and footings.  Subsequently this is reinforced this by way of length of life not to mention high use (from a residential perspective).

Our quote has always been “if its not broke don’t fix it” therefore if you already have concrete why remove it for resin bonded stone installs?

 Existing stability and support are key to resin bonded stone applications compared to resin bound stone.  Simply though if it has supported your vehicle then

Resin bound stone is permeable and should have a different substrate than the standard concrete and tarmac you and I will have on our driveway path and patio.  Alternatively if the existing is used it will be key that the correct drainage options are considered.

There are many options to drainage issues when you are considering the frontage of your property.  If you have water concerns consider a bog garden

+5 ° to  +35°  is one of the indicators we do not work outside of.

Resin  is a two part product and in order for the mixing process to work correctly temperature is  key to the process.

Our resin is primarily for commercial use but we apply  residential adaptations  including mixing and application.

There are many comments on the internet with regard to the “scatter” coat system (resin bonded) but many fail to highlight the benefits of such a product.

Why ?

Drive-Cote Ltd believes it is relative to the options available for sealing and protecting the imprinted concrete.  Currently  the seals available serve to protect the imprinted concrete, but at the same time do not offer adequate anti slip properties, and certainly not to the degree that an anti slip resin drive can.  In fact the resin drive offers a degree of purchase and anti slip quality that seals cannot.  The resin bonded resurfacing allows the special granular aggregate to sit slightly proud of the resin offering the best anti slip properties.

A recent enquiry  came to us as follows

” I am having the solid resin but part of my back garden is in shade an awful lot.  My son in law says it will go green?  Is this right and if so can I clean that off or is it permanent damage please?

Many thanks for any help.  I  had the garden landscaped 6 years ago but they made a mess.  They did not remove a pond that I paid for just filled it in with soil  plus other problems.   So I want this installation to go ok as now I do not work its a lot to spend out again. Many thanks indeed for any help.”

Our response  with regard to this resin garden shaded area query was to suggest clarification with installer but the enquirer went on to say 

Resin Bound is porous  so moss, algae and weeds can grow up (weeds)  or down (seeds) embed. Moss is a type of  small flowerless green plant that lacks true roots.  It grows in damp habitats and reproducing by means of spores released from stalked capsules. Algae is a simple, non-flowering, and typically aquatic plant of a large group that includes the seaweeds and many single-celled forms. Algae contain chlorophyll but lacks true stems, roots, leaves, and vascular tissue.

As resin bound is porous,  weeds and seeds can be an issue as roots embed this makes it harder to remove and potentially more damaging. Moss and algae causing a green/brown potentially slippy  area are a potential as well.  With regular cleanings and stiff brushing this  should be more manageable and removable.

Resin Bonded is NOT porous

Weeds and seeds are less of an issue as it does not allow the ingress of water. Therefore weeds growing up are virtually nil.  The same with seeds embedding the resin does not allow the root to go through the resin. Moss and algae as they are rootless can still develop but are easily removable with a stiff brush and as resin bonded is more anti slip and aggressive in texture than bound moss cannot adhere to the surface as well.

Once again to reiterate these aspects should be dealt with by your installer“.
