For a resin bonded resurfacing option there are no special resin paving edging requirements unlike resin bound paving which usually does.

Resin paving edging requirements are not a necessary with resin bonded applications as one of the benefits of a resin resurfacing project with the resin bonded install is the fact that it does not affect exisiting levels. Key and extremely important for the end product so it does not affect access to gates and doors for example, or more importantly drainage.

Resin paving edging requirements differ with resin bound stone applications as this is applied on a deeper level so ultimately it can affect existing levels, access and drainage.

We have recently completed a small commercial project in Sheffield and this client wanted an anti slip option in addition to the resurfacing needs.

Due to the speed of application and curing time this created minimal mess and disruption and as it was an access way, minor hindrance in accessing the site. No resin paving edging requirements for this neat little project. Don’t forget resin bonded aggregate can extend and protect the original surface. As the resin is an impermeable product it prevents the ingress of water and therefore reduces deterioration of the existing concrete or tarmac.

hand laid resin bonded aggregate

At Drive-Cote Ltd our process of resurfacing concrete, tarmac and imprinted concrete provides a hand laid resin bonded aggregate installation. Our primary installs are for residential driveways paths and patios meaning those awkward to reach spots and awkward access areas are easily dealt with.

Recently we have been requested to quote on an area of concrete for a rear patio. The unusual thing about this job is the fact that the hand laid resin bonded aggregate quote was for a dual purpose – as the surface was also a roof for a basement.

The client wanted a solution which would seal the concrete patio area. Our resin bonded stone would have been perfect as being a non porous surface it would have prevented the ingress of water. At the same time this surface would provide an anti slip and protective coating for the patio area. However unfortunately for this customer even though our hand laid resin bonded aggregate would have been ideal, they had recently suffered a flooding of the area which had caused major damage.

They were a little too late with our quote, as had the resin bonded surface been in place it would have prevented this flooding through to the basement.

The client has been considering our install as it would have saved them a considerable amount of money and disturbance. They would have been able to leave the concrete slab in place allowing it to be used as a base for the resin.

In the past we have covered a local terrace for a customer and some 10 years on this is still as good as new.

Resin Bonded Gravel and Resin Bonded Aggregate providing an alternative to the usual options for your driveway path or patio. If it’s not broke don’t fix it.

We are based in Nottinghamshire but accessible to Yorkshire and Derbyshire areas. We have completed anti slip surfacing in Skegby, Aspley, Bilsthorpe, Bulwell, Clay Cross, Cotgrave,Doncaster, Huthwaite, Mansfield Woodhouse, New Houghton, Pentrich, Peterborough, Ravenshead, Sellers Wood, Shirebrook, Spalding, Sutton Bonnington, Toton, Warsop, Worksop.

We do not profess to having the perfect solution to a problem you may have but what we do try and do is offer honest answers and be an informative resin driveway company. We pride ourselves on posting as much information as possible to allow home owners to make informed decisions.

We have recently been contacted by a homeowner who had a few question with regard to a cold call to resin his driveway.

And as part of our informative resin driveway company policy we provided as follows:

Homewner

“ I have just received a quotation from a “cold call” to resin my drive & paths total square metres of 176 onto a good concrete drive and sound paving slabs. £7,000 to include some blocks next to a lawn. Is this a fair price or are they missing something out please. What would be your approx price?”

Drive-Cote Ltd

“ Thanks for the email. I will be honest we have not heard of them in the resin industry, but there are lots of companies popping up. So it could be a new company or perhaps it is a different arm to an existing company. That aside have they quoted you for resin bonded (impermeable) or resin bound (permeable) do you know?

Homeowner

“Good morning Faith, Thank you for your reply. All I know is that they put liquid & aggregate in a mixer and then lay it by hand on the drive. I trust this will help you with providing an approx price. Kind regards”

Drive-Cote Ltd

“Thanks for the info and apologies for not getting back to you sooner. If the company use a mixer to agitate the resin and aggregate together, they will be installing resin bound gravel.

We would not put resin bound (permeable) on an impermeable surface (concrete). The idea with resin bound is that it is classed as porous paving which is advocated by a lot of the local authorities as it can manage run off water from driveway and hard landscaping areas. However the concern we have with this is that it is important to establish where the run off water will go once it permeates through? If it sits between the two surfaces then it has the opportunity to cause problems in winter time with the freeze thaw process.

The resin bound installation you have been quoted for appears to be priced at just under £40 per sqm. For resin bound this is an extremely “good” price so a few questions needs to be asked in our opinion. If it is a start up company do they now what they are doing? Have they priced it correctly? On the other hand if it is a local small business, they may be able to price this competitively to keep a business running. Or it may not be a very good price in the long run.

We have been installing for 15 years now and our price for completing the works in resin bonded (not bound) would be approximately £45 per sqm. ( 176 x £45 = £7920.00 ) Resin bound works under normal circumstances would mean removing the existing surface and then to have resin bound laid onto a compacted hardcore base. This would be about £60 per sqm (176 x £60 = £10, 560.00) with the additional cost to remove the existing concrete and dispose of the waste.

Our suggestion would be to ask further questions for eg ask where they are based? What about the about the porosity for eg. Installing onto a concrete surface? Also if your existing levels are fine, then laying resin bound onto the concrete means an additional surface depth of approximately 18mm which means it would sit proud so edgings may need to be sorted (although you talk of block paved edges so they could be looking at rebedding these to accommodate this).

Resin bonded which is what we primarily work with is applied differently and designed to work off existing surface such as concrete and tarmac and as such resurface.

If its not broke don’t fix it! Is what we say.

The reason we work with concrete and tarmac is that it is pretty tough stuff. Used on roadways and for house building and footings. Our product resin bonded stone is not designed to be a stand alone product. Resin bound is a porous product and potentially less tensile than concrete and tarmac and if used as a stand alone surface, we would question the capability to withstand a heavy vehicle for example.

You need to investigate further with regard to this costing and any credible company should be able to justify and qualify what they do and their price.

Hope this helps but if you need any further info then please do not hesitate to contact us. We are not here to condemn any other company but we do try to be an Informative resin driveway company ”.

So if you live in Stonebroom, Morton, Shirebrook, Oxton, Southwell, Kirkby in Ashfield, Chesterfield, Hasland, Arnold or any other area local to Mansfield where we are based call Drive-Cote Ltd and get honest answers to your driveway path or patio problems from an informative resin driveway company.

Remember block paving, concrete, imprinted concrete, slabs and tarmac no all surfaces should be resurfaced. Resin is not the answer to all surfaces. However resin bonded stone can offer an anti slip, durable and virtually weed free and maintenance free resurfacing alternative to having the existing surface removed. Free quotations.

resin bound driveway odour and staining

Recently we have had cause to discuss another installers works as a result of a phone call we received in connection with Resin bound driveway odour and staining. The caller had had a recent install and now she said the resin bound driveway odour and staining and not disappeared (as she had been advised it would)

We are not in the job of criticising other companies, installers or works but when we are faced questions about a resin bound driveway odour and staining it does give us the opportunity to highlight how temperamental resin can be! And in the wrong hands this is can be compounded.

The lady and her neighbour had had an install of resin bound aggregate and as you will see from our answers below this helps to identify why

The smell is there

The resin bound driveway has not cured

The resin bound install has staining

“Apologies for the delay in putting details down with regard to your resin bound driveway odour and staining but please find as follows

Just a few opinions as per our conversation of Tuesday 29 March 2016.

Firstly, you stated that yours and your neighbours resin bound driveways had not only been completed in the winter months which we not normally advocate and in fact the install was in wet conditions. Wet and heavy moisture content do no go with resin based products which should as a rule be laid in temperatures above 5° c and in dry conditions – hence non curing.

You mentioned heavy staining and this could be as a result of the water emulsifying with the resin giving a milky appearance due to an install in wet weather

The fumes we can only think are relevant to the type of resin used. We use a polyurethane product which is totally odour free and best suited to domestic applications but epoxy was the original resin and this may be the reason for the smell.

Hope this helps with the issue you have with the installs, but we do recommend returning to your installer for further help”.

We have been installing residential resin for over 15 years now. There will always be potential issues with resin due to lack of knowledge for example, poor surface prep, humidity, poor substrate or even incompatible surface – block paving being a good example.

Finally, there is always the chance that the resin is defective but with a quality installer and supplier this is not a common occurrence.

Resin is currently available as a DIY product but just remember the above! But at the same time look at where resin can be used! To coin a phrase “the posiblities are endless”

Feel free to look through our website and view recently completed works.

resin bound or a resin bonded surface

Local enquiry querying whether to go for a resin bound or a resin bonded surface. The client had already had a quote for resin bound paving but was a little confused as to how that would work with the resin bound being permeable and the tarmac he has in place being impermeable.

The quoting company had said that the permeable resin bound surfacing would allow the water to permeate and infiltrate through and then would just drain away naturally. The caller had been mulling over the options and then came to us for a bonded quote. During the course of our conversation he did highlight the fact that he already had puddles and that was one of his concerns. There was a backfall to his property so if as the quoting company says, it drains away it would all fall to his property which would actually create different problem.

In our conversation I would say it wasn’t that the permeable resin bound company were necessarily incorrect on their idea. They may well have intended to install aco drainage across the front of his property to catch the excess water but he did not seem to be aware that this may be an option. His main concern was that as he already had puddles then that would mean the fall is not correct to ensure drainage, so if the water sits under the resin bound then it is only the top surface that is permeable. So surely the permeability is not as efficient was his understanding.
There is no quick fast fix for drainage and permeable surfaces. One shoe does not fit all. It depends if your budget is restricted, it depends if you want a weed free and anti slip option. It depends if run off water and/or the fall to the surface is correct.

Here at Drive-Cote Ltd we try and provide as much information as possible. We take each installation on its own merits. It is not just a case of a resin bound or a resin bonded surface – your choice. More a resin bound or a resin bonded surface which is the right and best choice for your driveway and the surface in question.
Kimberley, Brampton, Wingerworth, Bonsall , Ravenshead, Killamarsh, Ravenshead, Kirkby in Ashfield, Mansfield callus for an example of our works near to you. Anti slip and virtually weed and maintenace free.

resin driveway – relatively new option

This is a question we get asked a lot. Resin driveway – relatively new option? the simple answer is no. I found this thread on the internet whilst researching our competitors (as you do). Just from the discussions online and comments it is clear to see how confusing information is available.

Resin is a highly versatile product and has been in use for a number of years. If you look at the dates on this forum you will be able to answer the question resin driveways – relatively new option – as these alone date back to 2010.

Some of the points raised and answered (not always correctly we will add) are as follows:

“We’ve got an ugly concrete driveway in front of our house, and for various reasons it isn’t practical at the moment to dig it all up and lay a new one.

I was looking around for any cheaper options, and I came across the idea of a resin bonded gravel layer on top of the concrete. It looks great in the pictures – does anyone have any real life experience?”

and

“Most applicators will want to start a fresh and pull up old concrete making it a bit expensive. They will want to give a warranty”

also

“You can DIY this. If the existing concrete is sound, then its just a matter of scrapping off any loose stuff, filling any dips or holes and then coating.

You can get the resin, binder and top coats from various online suppliers and the gravel or whatever can be sourced locally if you like. You may need to buy some special rakes or squeegees or mixing paddles for the application, but it will still be all cheaper than getting a firm in. It really is not that hard or “specialist”

“You may get at least 10-15 years out of it, may be much more, as it depends on the prevalent weather that the drive gets, and the sun breaking down the resin bond. Good drainage is a must.

Another problem for drives, is that cars tend to be driven in the same place, and wheels turned in the same spot, and so particular areas may get more wear and degrade sooner. But that’s not to say that as a whole, the surface wont last long.

Prepare the base well, apply it properly and it can be one of the best looking drives you can get – especially if you incorporate some other paving, and think about the design a little”

Some true facts but also some misconceptions. How do you distinguish? Can you be confident that a resin driveway – relatively new option – is installed correctly?

Have a look around our website, lots of information for you to peruse and even more important it is free to talk!

Whatever your thoughts it is a more cost effective option than block paving. It it a lot speedier to install than block paving. A resin driveway path or patio has anti slip properties not offered with imprinted concrete.

driveway resurfacing blend to block paving

We regularly are asked if we can resurface block paving. Unfortunately our resin is not suitable however a driveway resurfacing blend to existing block paving is not a problem.

The resin bonded aggregate for our driveway resurfacing blend to block paving is ideal. Especially if the edgings of block paving are already in place. Being based in Mansfield, we have good access routes to the four counties – Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire

The key to all our works whether the existing driveway path or patio is concrete, tarmac or imprinted concrete, is if it is not broke don’t fix it.

The recent Derbyshire patio enquiry is a prime example. The surface was absolutely perfect apart from the fact that it has surface stains and marks, and the elements had damaged it visually. But it was only surface damage. So we can resurface with our resin bonded stone.

We have been installing for over 12 years now, and the increase in demand is now high. Why?

Numerous reasons

including Anti slip

Weedfree

Maintenance free

Uses the existing surfaces

More turf arrived from our supplier 2 hours early for our Mansfield garden project. Always a good sign for the customer – but not always for Drive-Cote Ltd if we are not on site.!

Only a small area – 32 sqm. This turf for the Mansfield garden project has come from a local supplier we have used before.

The area we are working on has been thoroughly watered previously and fertiliser has been applied to give the turf a good start.

Before laying we have destoned the area and finely raked to correct levels using a string line.

First strips laid to form a starting point. The rolls were laid in a staggered brick bond pattern and the edges cut to the border using a sharp serrated knife. All the rolls laid and cuts completed we have only one roll left over. So minimum wastage. Always good. Soon as we have completed the sprinkler put in place and turf throroughly watered.

It is important not to let dry out for a few week until the roots take hold. We would expect to give the lawn a light trim in 3 weeks time.

Lots of alternatives out there for the gardens now, low maintenance artificial turf for example. The choices for garden design are endless. We have found over the years of working with gardens and driveways, that if you are dealing with large areas if they are put in to sections by way of paths, paving and turfing for example. It is far easier to maintain areas then. Gone are the days of square uniform areas. Make your driveway, path or patio part of your overall design.

No need to have large concrete areas why not consider slate infills, decorative sections with gravel for example, striking planting. Hardy plants, architectural structural planting can add interest. We are based in the East Midlands, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, call us now for a chat. We can give you some free advice. Weeds and maintenance should not be a necessity. Have you thought about selling your excess garden plants? or if you are in short supply buy from another fellow gardener?

Resin driveway information call now

Have been out to revisit a Lincolnshire enquiry who had previously had resin driveway information but I needed to revisit at their request.

This client originally came to us looking at the possibilities of a resin bound resurfacing quote for an old red tarmac driveway. However on discussing the requirements and the existing surface we explained that due to the porosity of the resin bound application we would not advocate this. As a result of this we were able to provide them with resin driveway information but for the bonded not the bound

The house had been rendered and unfortunately the plasterer had made a mess and marked the tarmac. It is possible to remove the marks but probably not without evidence of some form of spillage.

The actual tarmac was solid and sound but it did have moss growth which did was causing a bit of an issue with being slippy in Winter.

When I first priced for this client and provided them with the resin driveway information they were quite happy with the size and basic existing area. There was a lawned area to the side of the driveway and with the installation of a resurfacing job this would tidy the whole area up.

However after perusing our details and price, the client had decided that whilst having a resin bonded resurfacing potential, then this would be a good opportunity to increase the area, maintain the existing but also make the whole area look uniform. Who know perhaps this client could rent out this driveway which seems to be becoming increasingly popular,

This benefit is not provided by the usual driveway products such as tarmac, concrete, imprinted concrete or block paving.

On calling round the client was looking towards a narrow extension piece approximately 3 ft wide and 3m length. This would give the client a little more room to swing the car into the garage. We have priced for this and look forward to receiving the ok on this in the next few weeks.

Being based in Mansfield in the East Midlands we are ideally positioned to serve four counties Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and Lincolnshire.
