Back in November 2016 we highlighted the issues with slippery driveway path and patio surfaces and with the weather this week forecast to be icy it brings home the need to ensure your driveway path or patio is not a danger to you or your visitors.

In our post we also referred to an imprinted concrete surface we had recovered previously and said

Resin bonded stone is sometimes called scatter coat resin bonded stone – the angular non coated aggregate provides excellent adhesion and anti slip properties.  Resin bound stone provides a shiny surface as it has a covering for the stone.  This can be “anti slipped” so to speak but we believe is not as effective as the Drive-Cote Ltd resin bonded scatter coat system. Scatter coat sometimes is indicated as not as good as resin bound (trowelled on) but they are completely different applications and provide a difference quality to your driveway, path or patio.

The angular shaped stone sits proud of the resin thus providing more aggressive anti slip surfacing.  Don’t forget a resin seal (both for blockpaved and resin bound) will wear on your driveway through tyre use.  So maintenance will be required in both these installations.

Remember the right product for the right purpose so consider the difference between resin bonded and resin bound stone driveway anti slip properties We would not advocate a resin bonded surface for a playground area as one shoe does not fit all.

porous permeable resin bonded stone  -is it permeable?  Or is it porous – whats the difference?

Porosity tells us how much water rock or soil can retain. Permeability is a measure of how easily water can travel through porous soil or bedrock. Soil and loose sediments, such as sand and gravel, are porous and permeable. They can hold a lot of water, and it flows easily through them. Although clay and shale are porous and can hold a lot of water, the pores in these fine-grained materials are so small that water flows very slowly through them. Clay has a low permeability.

Resin bonded stone is not porous or permeable, resin bound paving, aggregate and stone are all said to be permeable.  The question is how permeable is a porous surface.

We have been working with resin for over 15 years now and we are constantly amazed at the reports out there that the free draining of a surface can solve all your drainage problems.

Porous permeable resin bonded stone is not an option because it is an impermeable and protective surface. The purpose of a resin bonded surface is different than a resin bound application.  In addition to this it is a completely different installation process.

For a resin bonded resurfacing option there are no special resin paving edging requirements unlike resin bound paving which usually does.

Resin paving edging requirements are not a necessary with resin bonded applications  as one of the benefits of a resin resurfacing project with the resin bonded install is the fact that it does not affect exisiting levels.  Key and extremely important for the end product so it does not affect access to gates and doors for example, or more importantly drainage.

Resin paving edging requirements differ with resin bound stone applications as this is applied on a deeper level so ultimately it can affect existing levels, access and drainage.

We have recently completed a small commercial project in Sheffield and this client wanted an anti slip option in addition to the resurfacing needs.

Due to the speed of application and curing time this created minimal mess and disruption and as it was an access way, minor hindrance in accessing the site.  No resin paving edging requirements for this neat little project.  Don’t forget resin bonded aggregate  can extend and protect the original surface. As the resin is an impermeable product it prevents the ingress of water and therefore reduces deterioration of the existing concrete or tarmac.

a resin bonded USP for your concrete or patio would have to be the fact that it uses an existing surface as a base.

Not all resin resurfacing is bonded and therefore does not provide the benefit of the USP on using an existing surface.  This week we have been provided with a number of enquiries all needing clarification as to the difference between resin bonded and resin bound surfacing and paving options.

We are Mansfield based and have been working with resin for nearly 2 decades and even to this day we still have to clarify the differences in resin, its purposes and uses and the benefits.

We have even recently seen a resurfacing with resin on a block paved drive which is not a something we advocate. As the start of the season begins we thought we would  remind everyone of the possible driveway surface solutions available.  Obviously when we say driveway we include paths and patios in this subject.

No one surface is the ideal, especially if the subject matter is external.  Whilst we in the UK are not subject to severe weather conditions as a whole, we still need to be respectful of elements which can create the need for possible driveway surface solutions.

The freeze thaw effect which has not had much effect this year, is the main cause of surface deterioration with tarmac and concrete.  Potholes and shelling being obvious evidence of the how the weather can damage our driveways paths and patios.  That said the surface damage is generally superficial and if treated or protected soon enough further deterioration will not occur.

Resin bonded stone and resin bound paving very often confused as the same ( which they are definitely not), block paving, imprinted concrete, tarmac and concrete are all possible options but it should be realised there is a downside to all  external surfacing.  It may be a maintenance option is necessary (block paving and imprinted concrete for example).  We always recommend all possible driveway surface solutions are considered carefully.  Consider why you need to address the area, or if it is just a cosmetic solution you required.

We had a potential customer this week requesting a visit as a result of a referral.  Not the usual type as this enquiry had come through as a result of our proven resin bonded works.

They had recently moved into a Nottingham property in Tollerton.  The property was already benefiting from our resin bonded stone previous installed about 6 years ago.  The resin bonded aggregate had been installed on a large concrete area on a side elevation.  This proven resin bonded works had impressed the the new occupants that much that they contacted the previous owners to obtain our details.

Sawley near Long Eaton has been the area to visit for Drive-Cote Ltd this week. 

The call for a visit was for advice with regard to a resin install already in place at the callers home address.  This resin bound surface had been completed over 6 years ago and was causing some concern for the client as there was a vast difference between two halves of his driveway.

One section of the resin driveway had weathered a lot better than the other in this homeowners opinion and only on a site visit did we realise why.  One section of the resin in this resin bound driveway base comparison had less moss, weed and algae growth than the other side.  On first impressions you would have said that they were completely different installs. Or at least had been installed at  a different time but this was not the case.

On speaking with the homeowner we realised the reason were having to call to view and assess the resin bound driveway base comparison – one section was based on an original base of concrete and the other was a hardcore compacted and free draining base. This highlighted the difference between the two.

As a result of the free draining hardcore base the water had permeated through the resin bound surface (as is the quality of the resin bound applications) and therefore caused less moss/weed/algae formation.

The other half of the drive had more moss/algae/weeds because whilst the resin bound gravel is porous the concrete is not! 

This client was quite disappointed with the look of his drive and is hoping we can offer a solution by installing our resin bonded stone over the two sections.

Not one of our normal installs and not one we can say a definite yes to without further considerations.   One school of thought at present is to have the surface cleaned and any moss and algae removed.  We can then reassess the surface then.

Resin has increased in popularity over the years as it can be an attractive and durable option, however if installed incorrectly like any external surface it will not stand up to the elements and may well be false economy.

A recent call over the winter time has been for a decorative resin bonded stone covering  cost for slippery imprinted driveways.  Unfortunately the client was too far for us to be able to complete the works, but we are more than happy to chat and give as much information as possible.
