We made mention of  needing  to be respectful of the wildlife  and how over the years the environment has changed and continues to change.   We also said what choices we made 10 or 20 years ago are not necessarily the same choice we should make now.  How true is this bearing in mind current climate changes

How the years have changed. From a Snowmagedden to  a BBC weather  report for January 2022 which says January 2022 was the sunniest since 1959.

How things change!

Resin bonded stone historically was a fair weather option.  Usually associated with Spring and Summer.  However look at January last year and you would have to say that is not so! Unless they have moved January to another Season?

Concrete is  a quality and highly tough product when installed correctly.  However some of the disadvantages can be quite minimal but impactful.

Got a problem with slippy imprinted concrete?  Then an anti slip protective durable resin bonded application could be the way forward!

We are regularly contacted and asked if we can help with imprinted concrete resurfacing.  And the simple answer is yes!

Because  resin bonded installs are quite an aggressive finish they offer an anti slip property  and effectiveness second  to none.  A  well sealed shiny surface cannot be as effective.

We won’t deny that it completely covers the surface.  As a benefit it means

No more sealing.

No more slippy hazards. 

As a disadvantage (if you like the look of imprinted concrete) it completely removes all visibility of the imprinted concrete.

Please note there are alternative remedies to improving the anti slip properties of imprinted concrete.  Such as additives to sealers .

These however do not offer the same scale of durabilitiy as resin bonded stone.

A resin driveway  resurfacing finish can be provided by way of  number of options from local companies.

For example

Remove the existing surface and install a brand new resin surface

Or

Reuse the existing surface as a base and apply a resin bonded stone surface

It all depends on what is already in place and the purpose of the works.

COST

Cost could be a consideration as well.   Is there a limited budget for example?

Primarily the existing surface is the decider.  It is no good resurfacing an unsound surface.

These considerations are relative to a concrete and tarmac surface.

The concrete network   (American based but a very informative site)   says   “In any case, the underlying concrete for a resurfacing project must be sound. It is not feasible to resurface concrete that is heaving, has severe cracks, or is damaged due to freeze/ thaw damage. Resurfacing will not solve underlying soil problems”

A resin driveway resurfacing finish could be classed as adhesive as it “binds”.  This could be  aggregate and resin in a specialist aggregator.  Or it could be resin laid and then  has aggregate applied to it to bond the existing and aggregate together.

Remember at this time of year slips trips and falls can be a concern.  One of the biggest benefits is the anti slip quality provided by resin bonded installs. Particularly good for imprinted concrete

A resin bonded system path equipment requirement is different to a resin bound system path equipment requirement. 

In the most basic of requirements the following will  needed for the different applications

Not a lot of difference really.  However the following should be considered when ultimately choosing between resin bonded or resin bound installs.

There are products out there and in the grand scheme of things these items make it all seem very complicated.   Then there is the contradiction of you tube which can indicate anyone can do it!

But it is the same as anything  – the right tools , product knowledge and experience  are all key.  So anybody can do it right? 

Yes!  but it depends how well you want the works completed.  Also how much are you prepared to pay twice for a job that should only be completed once.

We can all paint – over the years  we repeat this process and with the help of  you tube, mums and dads,  mates in the trade etc  and they all serve to indicate a diy project is possible . As the years progress we all gain experience in painting and decorating. However with a resin bonded or resin bound install  this will not be a regular application.  Well at least it shouldn’t be!

Can block paving resin resurfacing work?   Simply put No!

Block pavers are individual surfaces which have the ability to move independently.   Resin surfacing is a monolithic singular surface.  Meaning no independent movement

This means with the weight of a vehicle one surface will contradict the other.  One of the many benefits  to have a solid monolithic substrate to support the resin. If you think about it concrete is used for footings . Why? Because it is a solid structure.  Meaning every good reason for it to be suitable a driveway.

Tarmac is equally suitable as this is also a solid monolithic surface.

Resin bonded stone, resin bonded aggregate or resin bonded gravel (all are the same)  originated from the ability to protect and offer an anti slip and potentially weed free surface.  Over time the evolution to domestic surfacing as opposed to commercial has developed. 

We were called to quote for a covering for block paving.  Resin has a number of uses albeit differing types of resin, ranging from a clear coating  which can work on block paving down to the requirement to remove block paving to provide a resin bonded or bound surface.  However our resin for resurfacing block paving is not realistic. However the quote we were already call out to assess was all set up to have a bound surface laid onto it!  Consequently not  something that would have provided any longevity or durability

Resin bound is laid to a depth that  can require the use of profiles

These profiles which are only required for bound installs and NOT bonded offer a support and an edging to support the surface.

The options  with resin once a surface such as block paving  is removed  would be:

Option 1

would be to lay resin bound surfacing and there is plenty of information on numerous sites. Explaining the processes and procedures

Option 2

would be to lay a new concrete or tarmac surface and then have a resin bonded surface.

Neither of these to options would be an inexpensive choice.

All options for driveways paths and patios highlight the surface water drainage requirements, however it should always be noted whilst permeability is always reinforced as a need it is not a must.

What is the existing surface?

Concrete? Tarmac? Imprinted concrete? Slabs? Block paving?

How stable is the existing surface?

Has it been down for a number of years? Are there any cracks?

Will or do you require it for  vehicle or foot traffic use?

Stability and support being paramount for this question

Is it for residential or commercial purposes?

In other words  high or low volume and use.

Resin driveway (or path and patio) stability will have a major impact on whether a resin driveway is for you bearing in mind the purpose of the works. In addition it will also have an impact on the longevity of any work completed.

Resin bonded surfacing uses an existing surface and therefore resin driveway ground stability is key.

Concrete as an example is a quality substrate.  Consider where it is used commercially- roads pavements, buildings, bridges and footings.  Subsequently this is reinforced this by way of length of life not to mention high use (from a residential perspective).

Our quote has always been “if its not broke don’t fix it” therefore if you already have concrete why remove it for resin bonded stone installs?

 Existing stability and support are key to resin bonded stone applications compared to resin bound stone.  Simply though if it has supported your vehicle then

Resin bound stone is permeable and should have a different substrate than the standard concrete and tarmac you and I will have on our driveway path and patio.  Alternatively if the existing is used it will be key that the correct drainage options are considered.

There are many options to drainage issues when you are considering the frontage of your property.  If you have water concerns consider a bog garden
