resin bonded stone historical posts

We decided to remind ourselves looking back at our posts. Some resin bonded stone historical posts for the month of January

January 2013 we talked of Snowmagedden

January 2014 we talked about the environment

We made mention of needing to be respectful of the wildlife and how over the years the environment has changed and continues to change. We also said what choices we made 10 or 20 years ago are not necessarily the same choice we should make now. How true is this bearing in mind current climate changes

January 2015 we talked about the advantages of resin bonded stone

How the years have changed. From a Snowmagedden to a BBC weather report for January 2022 which says January 2022 was the sunniest since 1959.

“The Met Office has also confirmed it was the sunniest January on record for England with a total of 80.7 hours, beating the previous record of 77.5 in 1959. It is also the third sunniest January on record for the UK, with 1959 remaining in the top spot with 69.7 hours”

How things change!

Resin bonded stone historically was a fair weather option. Usually associated with Spring and Summer. However look at January last year and you would have to say that is not so! Unless they have moved January to another Season?

Got a problem with slippy imprinted concrete? Then an anti slip protective durable resin bonded application could be the way forward!

We are regularly contacted and asked if we can help with imprinted concrete resurfacing. And the simple answer is yes!

Because resin bonded installs are quite an aggressive finish they offer an anti slip property and effectiveness second to none. A well sealed shiny surface cannot be as effective.

We won’t deny that it completely covers the surface. As a benefit it means

No more sealing.

No more slippy hazards.

As a disadvantage (if you like the look of imprinted concrete) it completely removes all visibility of the imprinted concrete.

Please note there are alternative remedies to improving the anti slip properties of imprinted concrete. Such as additives to sealers .

These however do not offer the same scale of durabilitiy as resin bonded stone.

From a resin bonded balcony upgrade to incorporating a resin bonded surface in your garden.

The options to consider your outside space are endless. For instance shapes, colours, finishes and textures.

From wall gardens to bog gardens. Consider the space you are wanting to work with.

Bog gardens can be a good winter project to keep your garden in check. So despite the weather carry on gardening

Not to mention the mental health benefits and after the last 2 years of covid lockdown we need to take care of our health

Do you have drainage issues?

Is it easily accessible?

Do you like colour or are you more of a natural person or family?

Is the environment your main consideration or alternatively are you style over function?

So many things to consider.

Furthermore if you have the opportunity why not consider a resin bonded balcony to elevate and enhance your garden vista.

We completed a resin bonded balcony a number of years ago and have subsequently been quoting and pricing for similar works.

Over the years we have developed a small but perfectly formed garden. A little tropical paradise in Mansfield. (Well we think it is)

Try a sunken greenhouse to allow more greenhouse space without taking up too much surface area. Above all consider the numerous options.

Resin Bonded Gravel and Resin Bonded Aggregate providing an alternative to the usual options. Furthermore this will protect your driveway, path , patio or balcony.

We are based in Nottinghamshire and accessible to local areas We have completed anti slip surfacing in Skegby, Aspley, Bilsthorpe, Bulwell, Clay cross, Cotgrave,

Huthwaite, Ravenshead, Sellers Wood, Shirebrook, Heanor, Belper, Shirland, Alfreton, Morton, Stonebroom, Somercotes, Sutton in Ashfield and Ilkeston. From a resin bonded balcony upgrade to incorporating a resin bonded surface in your garden.

Just to name some areas where we have worked.

Call 01623 623986

Winterproof resin bonded stone

Now is the time to beat the slippy and icy surfaces with a winterproof resin bonded stone ant slip surface.

Resin bound surfacing encapsulates the stone and is trowelled on to surfaces. This means the surface is not as anti slip as a winterproof resin bonded stone area. The uniqueness of a resin bonded surface is that the shape and size of the aggregate and the fact that it sits proud of the resin whilst also being partly embedded in resin for adhesion.

Road use is where the resin bonded stone started – providing anti skid properties but at the same time offering a durable and protective surface. What makes resin bonded resurfacing anti slip – more irregularities expressed in the aggregate shape which in turn creates more friction- its as simple as this. The smoother the surface the more slippy the surface.

Winter time is catching up fast and in October 2013 we wrote about how the weather can be a dictate for installations

“However once again we see the statements by some companies that they can apply resin (resin bound and resin bonded) when it is raining. But be very wary of these claims as a resin drive installation Winter time can be hard work. The weather does not have to halt a project, but it can hold it to ransom! Concrete and tarmac have different porosity qualities so the surface for resin drive installations Winter time can dictate on how and when to apply a resin bonded or resin bound application”

Hi, I stumbled upon your website after reading about you in an online forum “outandabout live”. The pseudonym of the very helpful person was “faithcaine” who may be an owner. I have a forty year old concrete drive which although cracked in places is very solid. These have probably been there since the 1980’s as I have seen little change since then. Would this be suitable for resin-bonded? Photo attached.

Unfortunately I think I may be way too far out of your area (Essex) for you to be able to help me. I do wonder if perhaps you know the names of any reliable installers in the S.E. though if that is the case. Kind regards, Dave

Thank you for your email. Guilty as charged! that was me on “outandabout live”!

Simon has looked at your images and based on an assumption that the levels are not too differing on the different sections, with good prep works the resin bonded stone should be able to be resurfaced. As with all works its about a site visit and good prep work.

You are correct we are too far to be able to complete the works. However there are 2 National companies who have installers in different areas. Just remember and be aware a lot of companies favour the bound (requiring the existing surface to be removed). However with resin bonded this is designed to resurface existing surfaces.

Addagrip seem to work more with resin bonded so I would start with them first. Also if you look local – shopping centres and walk ways – you will probably find works completed – contact the council and see if they can tell you who installed the surface and whilst they may be commercial and bound- they may well be able to recommend a local installer.

Hi Faith,

Well thank you so much for the helpful advice especially as you are not in my area. All I can say is good luck with your business and I am sure you will continue to do well with your excellent attitude to customers and people in general as well judging by your comments on that forum. Kind Regards Dave

Imprinted concrete, tarmac or concrete we can resurface (subject to a site survey). Anti slip and virtually weedfree. No mess and no disruption and no or minimum costly landfill disposal requirements. Our resurfacing option does not affect existing surfaces.

Anti skid resin surfacing base requirements providing an anti skid surface

What are the resin drive covering base requirements if I want to resurface my driveway?

What will be the cost for an anti skid resin drive covering for my concrete base?

Do I have a choice of colours for the finish?

We do get asked a lot about the anti skid resin surfacing covering base requirements which basically is concrete or tarmac. Having said that we can work with imprinted concrete which can be quite slippery and slabs but the basic resin drive covering base requirements will ultimately vary from client to client.

Some concrete surfaces are too rough, damaged or cracked for the anti skid resin surfacing but we offer free no obligation visits and will only surface what is truly suitable.

We have been in touch today with an alternative supplier and part of our chat was about resin bound and whether this can be an option for providing an anti slip surface for a base such as concrete and or tarmac. They agreed that the resin bound would not be a realistic covering as the resin bound needs a porous base to ensure the free draining.

Resin Bonded Gravel and Resin Bonded Aggregate providing anti skid resin surfacing. An alternative to the usual options for your driveway path or patio. If it’s not broke don’t fix it.

We are based in Nottinghamshire but accessible to Yorkshire and Derbyshire areas. We have completed anti slip surfacing in Skegby, Aspley, Bilsthorpe, Bulwell, Clay cross, Cotgrave, Doncaster, Huthwaite, Leamington Spa, Mansfield Woodhouse, New Houghton, Pentrich, Peterborough, Ravenshead, Sellers Wood, Shirebrook, Sutton Bonnington, Toton, Warsop, Worksop

Our resin bonded stone improves patch and mend strategies by extending, improving and providing extra durablity to your concrete or tarmac driveway path or patio.

The report in the BBC news says

“Potholes are a huge problem for all road users and the government is taking action, providing local authorities with more than £6.6bn for roads maintenance and pothole repair in the six years to 2021.”

The government is also trialling new technologies to stop potholes from forming and consulting on increasing the standards of roadworks by utility companies to help keep roads pothole-free for longer, he added”

Customer based informative discussion about the options for a garden project with diy paving slabs vs diy gravel bound resin surface being the initial point in August 2018.

The starting point for the discussion for the diy paving slabs vs diy gravel bound resin surface discussion is as follows

“We have been redesigning our garden 82ft by 45ft we done most of the work but i’m finding it hard to get information on the best offer or price for diy resin bound gravel or diy rapid set concrete – I need to get this finished so I can enjoy my garden and so my parents can relax in the garden with me they are disabled so it needs to be level as much as it can be i’m on a tight budget so any advice ideas or anything of help would be appreciated”

Cost and effectiveness for this project being important considerations.

One of the contributors to this discussion about diy paving slabs vs diy gravel bound resin surface says

“Resin bound gravel is porous, however not a diy project. I suggest asking for a quote from someone who has done a lot of installations, and inspect their previous work first. Concrete will need a runoff slight slope, and will be slippy in icy conditions”

How confusing are the options available? This Gardeners world forum shows the wide ranging potential for the original thread enquiry. As a resin bonded installer with over 18years experience we will try to provide honest and clear information to help clients choose the right option for the right surface and purpose. Resin bonded aggregate is not always the right product.

Resin bonded stone or gravel or aggregate lots of variances but the same product

This particular contributor to the Gardeners World Forum seems to be really helpful

“You can DIY either resin bonded or resin bound. In one you need to form the right sort of base, buy the right type of resin and then throw gravel over it so it sticks as the resin goes off. The right type of resin is expensive. In the other you need to buy/hire a paddle mixer and all the resin and aggregate – even more expensive. So although you’re doing it yourself, it’s not cheap and as has been said, the opportunities for making a pigs ear of it and not being able to undo it are significant. Personally, therefore, I’d not go that way.

Grid-paves are an easy DIY job, but the grids are relatively dear and need a lot of pre prep – hardcore, terram, tamping, sand base, etc. If you lay them over a bumpy surface they bend and you get sticky up bits (technical term) which eventually break off. If you have the machinery already to do the ground work and get a really good base, they look really good and last well.

Paving is easy to do but again, needs a good base if it’s to go down nice and flat and not creep. Paving that isn’t slippery in wet weather is fairly costly but you can buy it and lay it in stages as funds allow.

Concrete is cheapest and quickest. You can pour onto a roughly level surface and get it smooth. You can brush finish it to make it less slippy or let it go off just a bit and then jet-wash it to expose the top layer of aggregate, which gives you a similar – though less glamorous – effect to resin bonded gravel at a much lower cost (check on Youtube for vids on how to do it). I’d recommend using a permanent shuttering if you go this route – make large (one mixer load) squares using 4×2 timber, say, and effectively form really big in situ paving slabs. Pour, dress and finish each section one at a time if you’re working solo or you’ll cream-cracker yourself. I’ve done quite a lot of DIY concrete pouring and it’s hard to get it looking the business if you’re trying to do too much at once. But if you pace yourself to match your mixer, you can make a neat job of it for a lot less cash.

There’s nothing stopping you getting someone to put resin bonded gravel onto your concrete in a few years’ time if you win the lottery.

One other option for quick and non slippy would be composite decking. Looks smart (much more so than wooden decking) but costs a fair bit. It is good in the wet though – and again, very easy to put down DIY”
