Concrete driveway path or patio or just a general base for a garage, shed, conservatory or dog kennel. How good is yours?
Concrete can be used for driveways, paths and patios and it uses are not only restricted to durability and longevity but on a decorative level as well. It can also be used as a base conservatories and sheds. Timber frames are created to help lay concrete. The timber frame holds the wet concrete.
Calculating the required volume of a ready-mix supply can be a little confusing but simply multiply length x width x depth of the space you need to fill. This will give you the cubic size or volume of the required.
There are few products out there that match concrete when it comes to sustainability. When installed properly it should last decades ( which is why we work with concrete and use it as a base for our Resin Bonded Aggregate works).
It can be recycled at the end of its life – it can be crushed and reused as an aggregate in new concrete.
Technology has advanced to the development of reinforced concrete not only with steel reinforcement but it can now be fibre reinforced.
Whilst concrete is not generally an attractive surface, advancements have introduced imprinted concrete which can give a decorative finish. However we at Drive-Cote have been required to resurface some imprinted concrete finishes in order to introduce an anti slip quality to a level not found with any other driveway path or patio options.
It is quite important it is laid correctly i.e. the sub base, reinforcement and expansion strips for example.
Concrete can be finished in a variety of ways but as with imprinted concrete if it is smooth it can be slippy in bad weather. There are options though such as textured rollers and they can imprint a simple patten on the concrete.
Curing is quite important particularly the first 2 or 3 days which can have quite an impact. Drying out of the concrete (too fast can have quite a detrimental effect) as can the temperature.
Did you now it can take 28 days for concrete to achieve its required strength?
The Concrete Society is very useful resource
