This week we have received a request to provide anti slip surfacing for a steel surface for a local company.  This is a project we will be looking to complete at the earliest as, as always resurfacing works are required as a matter or urgency.

This week the forecast is a frosty outlook, so it will not be an option to complete the works too soon.

Each year the UK is subject to diverse winter weathers! For a fresh new and extended driveway resin bonded stone can provide  uniformity and a durable quality to an otherwise limiting access.  This Mansfield client wanted to extend and incorporate more hard standing area so we completed this Mansfield driveway resin refurbishment.  We could say completed in a day but that would be untrue as we had to extend the area first.

Works needed first to enable a uniform coverage included groundworks and preparation works to facilitate the concrete install prior to the resin install (which was completed in a day)

     The end product being a protective durable and anti slip surface.  Virtually maintenance free!

As the start of the season begins we thought we would  remind everyone of the possible driveway surface solutions available.  Obviously when we say driveway we include paths and patios in this subject.

No one surface is the ideal, especially if the subject matter is external.  Whilst we in the UK are not subject to severe weather conditions as a whole, we still need to be respectful of elements which can create the need for possible driveway surface solutions.

The freeze thaw effect which has not had much effect this year, is the main cause of surface deterioration with tarmac and concrete.  Potholes and shelling being obvious evidence of the how the weather can damage our driveways paths and patios.  That said the surface damage is generally superficial and if treated or protected soon enough further deterioration will not occur.

Resin bonded stone and resin bound paving very often confused as the same ( which they are definitely not), block paving, imprinted concrete, tarmac and concrete are all possible options but it should be realised there is a downside to all  external surfacing.  It may be a maintenance option is necessary (block paving and imprinted concrete for example).  We always recommend all possible driveway surface solutions are considered carefully.  Consider why you need to address the area, or if it is just a cosmetic solution you required.

This week a Warsop resin bonded gravel access was a priority

This client only had a small resin bonded gravel access requirement.  The driveway was an old tarmac driveway in need of anti slip resurfacing.  This elderly couple wanted to minimise any future driveway maintenance issues and decided that our resin bonded gravel access resurfacing would benefit the driveway and the clients themselves  for the future.

We also had an enquiry this week  from Hertfordshire.  The caller had seen a forum we had  commented on.  Unfortunately, the enquiry was not within our radius. We can only work realistically and effectively within a 60 miles of our base here Mansfield.

We have this week completed another local job this time in Belper.  The resin bonded gravel access requirement was very important to this client being a wheelchair user.  The existing surface in place was very uneven and the tarmac was degraded.  It was also damaged around manholes all of which were repaired prior to the application.  Certain areas had also dropped around the entrance ramp where water was gathering.  Part of our preparation works were to build up with our specialist remedial compound.  This then graded the slope and diverted the gathering water to a more suitable area.

Resurfaced and completed in a day. No mess and no disruption.  Other driveway installs do not have the same benefits as a resin bonded gravel access drive.  As it seals further the already impermeable surface it prevents the ingress and absorption of water.  This mean weeds and seeds cannot grow up nor can they embed in the existing surface. No weeds no maintenance.  Well virtually.  As an external surface it is vulnerable to the elements.  However, our resin bonded aggregate is designed for commercial purposes and therefore is well above driveway specification.

Lots of enquiries this week from pool surrounds to concrete and grassed areas in need of addressing with  impermeable resin bonded aggregate.

Unfortunately one was in Tiverton and the other one in Liverpool, so not really feasible for Drive-Cote to complete.  However a quote in Nuthall and one to complete Kirkby in Ashfield may prove to be potential.

Resin installs always depend on the surfaces already down but also includes the needs of the potential customers and funds available and that is just some of the considerations.

We pride ourselves at Drive-Cote Ltd on assessing each individual case on its own merits and just as importantly providing an honest service. If it is not the right option then we won’t quote.

We always highlight to our enquiries that there are two options of resin installations available. One being porous (permeable resin) one non porous (impermeable resin) both being dependant on the needs or purposes of the client/surface.  All our advice is free, our quotes are free and we try to be honest and open at all times.

There is no wrong or right just a correct product for the correct purpose.

For instance no matter how permeable a surface is if the correct substrate is not in place it won’t permeate fully and can be a potential for the freeze thaw process.

We at Drive-Cote have a preference for impermeable resin installs for a number of reasons including

• No weeds
• Uses existing surface
• Virtually no maintenance
• Doesn’t affect existing levels.

All of which are less applicable to impermeable resin.

Weeds can get a hold on the resin bound surface (permeable paving)  – they can embed in the resin and as a result of this damage the surface.

Using existing surfaces (concrete and tarmac which are impermeable)  for resin bound surfaces means you are putting a porous on to a non porous so where does the water permeate to creating a need to ensure that the correct falls, correct substrate and/ or drainage is in place.

Maintenance is a need for bound installs, clearing of debris and ensuring weeds do not achieve weed growth.  Moss and algae are more prevalent as like weeds with a porous surface they can get a grasp on the surface and create a slippy surface.

Resin bonded stone which is an impermeable surface does not affect existing levels as it is only about 5-8mm in depth on install.  However being a tough and durable surface (used for anti slip surfacing on roadways) it is well above spec and requirements of a residential driveway path or patio).

It would be nice to be able to say that the perfect driveway path or patio surface exists but that is not the case.  Just as an example if you hate the idea of maintenance then consider the fact that imprinted concrete and block paving both need maintenance.

Is this the question or is driveway tarmac concrete or resin the answer?

Over the years of working with resin, we have researched and followed a large number of reputable driveway companies -both large and small with regard to the installation of tarmac in particular.
When we first started in resin bonded stone resurfacing over 15 years ago, it was a little known product and over the years we have seen the industry grow.

Now commercial and residential installations can be seen all over the country. The rise in the use of resin bonded stone and resin bound paving has seen the use of tarmac and concrete continue to be popular. As a surface for a vehicle or vehicles there is little that can compare to the monolithic properties of tarmac and concrete.

Now there can be issues with the installs of concrete and tarmac and issues once laid – cracking for concrete or poor or unsuitable mixes, or sticky tarmac  can create big issues particularly if an experienced and knowledgeable contractor is not used but if laid correctly a good quality solid monolithic surface can last 30 years or more. Yes there may be surface deterioration, but a good solid quality install, structurally, can last a lifetime.

Which is exactly why we use concrete and tarmac as a base for our resin bonded installs. The existing surface is the surface that takes the weight of the vehicle and for our resin bonded aggregate concrete and tarmac are the perfect base.

Permeability

Suds permeability and water management are all high on our lists of priorities (or should be) but that doesn’t mean to say you have to lay a permeable surface. Just manage the run off water and to do this there are a variety of options including making sure the fall on your driveway is correct. Mind you if you think that is a simple option think again!

So back to the driveway tarmac concrete or resin – consider carefully before you remove an existing surface and think about resurfacing with resin bonded stone.  Over 2 years ago we were writing about gardens driveways drainage floods

Local enquiry querying whether to go for a resin bound or a resin bonded surface. The client had already had a quote for resin bound paving but was a little confused as to how that would work with the resin bound being permeable and the tarmac he has in place being impermeable.

The quoting company had said that the permeable resin bound surfacing would allow the water to permeate and infiltrate through and then would just drain away naturally. The caller had been mulling over the options and then came to us for a bonded quote. During the course of our conversation he did highlight the fact that he already had puddles and that was one of his concerns. There was a backfall to his property so if as the quoting company says, it drains away it would all fall to his property which would actually create different problem.

In our conversation I would say it wasn’t that the permeable resin bound company were necessarily incorrect on their idea. They may well have intended to install aco drainage across the front of his property to catch the excess water but he did not seem to be aware that this may be an option. His main concern was that as he already had puddles then that would mean the fall is not correct to ensure drainage, so if the water sits under the resin bound then it is only the top surface that is permeable. So surely the permeability is not as efficient was his understanding.
There is no quick fast fix for drainage and permeable surfaces. One shoe does not fit all. It depends if your budget is restricted, it depends if you want a weed free and anti slip option. It depends if run off water and/or the fall to the surface is correct.

The weather is certainly promoting interest  in the driveway sector this week.  We have come across a mix of surfaces to quote for. Ranging from garden projects to resin bound paving.   Clay Cross Ravenshead resin drive enquiries being the most prevalent at the moment.

Our suppliers of the aggregates for our resurfacing have recently celebrated over 30 years  of trading in specialist aggregates.

Quite a few of our customers are surprised how specialised the materials are that we use.  This is what makes a resin drive a  durable and effective product.

The Clay Cross Ravenshead resin drive enquiries this week were residential prospects.  However commercial requests are a lot more popular now as well.  The demand for the resin is increasing by the year.    We like to consider  this to be a recycling option for a driveway, path or patio.  No skips required to remove the existing.

Large commercial installations can offer an effective option saving on the mess and disruption which can be caused by the more common options such as block paving.  Why?  Because with the resin bonded resurfacing we at Drive-Cote  offer, works can be completed in a day and can be driven on the same day.  We will hasten to add not in all cases as size does have a bearing.  In addition the resin bonded resurfacing needs to be laid on a dry surface to ensure maximum efficacy.  This also means we are quite often at the mercy of the weather.

Large projects completed by commercial companies can boast the benefits of resin bonded resurfacing 

The life span  for a Clay Cross Ravenshead resin drive for example can vary from 5 to 15 years.  In most cases longer than this.  The choice of specialist aggregates used and the general use of the surface can all have a bearing.    As an example the same choice of aggregate for a driveway will have a more extensive durability than an installation used for a car park for instance.  The surface to which the aggregate is applied will also have a bearing. And remember a resin drive can offer a virtually weed  free anti slip option.

What should be important to remember is the fact that our Drive-Cote Ltd resurfacing stems from road use.  Therefore for residential areas such as Clay Cross Ravenshead resin drives paths or patios  are in excess of the requirements for general use.

Well there’s a question to ask!  resin drive discounts are they value for money – It is the same with most offers  you have to decide if they are genuine or value for money.

Perhaps when considering resin drive discounts are they value for money, is to first as why?

Is it defective stock?

Is it excess stock?

Is is a new product?

Is it a previous order made and then cancelled?

There are always opportunities and good quality discounts and offers out there, but as with most things you have to assess the facts and decide from there.

Are they a local company?

Has anyone  you know  used this company?

Are they a member of an approved contractor scheme?  – Now there is one to ask.  We have recently seen an approved contractor scheme  being discussed – ” I believe ‘Approved Installer/Assured’ schemes to be commercial suicide depending on the quality of the Area” says one contributor to a discussion – not on resin drives though.

One of the key things to remember is to always ask for more information.  In these tough times, a business may only want to just have enough business to keep him, his staff and his business continuing.  Larger concerns may have larger ambitions so

” resin drive discounts are they value for money”  can be a business specific offer and a valuable one so don’t dismiss it !

However also consider that not all offers are marketed heavily on line.

The driveway, building, gardening and landscaping business can be a tough industry and new products are always out there so to see discounts is not unusual.

We as a business do not tend to have discounts such as this,  as all our works are based on individual needs to the customer and circumstances and area.  We would be foolish to offer a firm price discounted or otherwise  apart from a very basic indication when we first speak to clients.
