Back in November 2016 we highlighted the issues with slippery driveway path and patio surfaces and with the weather this week forecast to be icy it brings home the need to ensure your driveway path or patio is not a danger to you or your visitors.

Resin bonded stone is sometimes called scatter coat resin bonded stone – the angular non coated aggregate provides excellent adhesion and anti slip properties.  Resin bound stone provides a shiny surface as it has a covering for the stone.  This can be “anti slipped” so to speak but we believe is not as effective as the Drive-Cote Ltd resin bonded scatter coat system. Scatter coat sometimes is indicated as not as good as resin bound (trowelled on) but they are completely different applications and provide a difference quality to your driveway, path or patio.

The angular shaped stone sits proud of the resin thus providing more aggressive anti slip surfacing.  Don’t forget a resin seal (both for blockpaved and resin bound) will wear on your driveway through tyre use.  So maintenance will be required in both these installations.

Remember the right product for the right purpose so consider the difference between resin bonded and resin bound stone driveway anti slip properties We would not advocate a resin bonded surface for a playground area as one shoe does not fit all.

Not all resin resurfacing is bonded and therefore does not provide the benefit of the USP on using an existing surface.  This week we have been provided with a number of enquiries all needing clarification as to the difference between resin bonded and resin bound surfacing and paving options.

We are Mansfield based and have been working with resin for nearly 2 decades and even to this day we still have to clarify the differences in resin, its purposes and uses and the benefits.

We have even recently seen a resurfacing with resin on a block paved drive which is not a something we advocate. Resin is a solid monolithic surface the same as concrete and tarmac and installing resin bonded stone on an impermeable surface means it reinforces the stability and strength of the resin.  The USP being it uses existing surfaces.  Don’t take our word for it.  Call for an example near you.

As the start of the season begins we thought we would  remind everyone of the possible driveway surface solutions available.  Obviously when we say driveway we include paths and patios in this subject.

No one surface is the ideal, especially if the subject matter is external.  Whilst we in the UK are not subject to severe weather conditions as a whole, we still need to be respectful of elements which can create the need for possible driveway surface solutions.

The freeze thaw effect which has not had much effect this year, is the main cause of surface deterioration with tarmac and concrete.  Potholes and shelling being obvious evidence of the how the weather can damage our driveways paths and patios.  That said the surface damage is generally superficial and if treated or protected soon enough further deterioration will not occur.

Resin bonded stone and resin bound paving very often confused as the same ( which they are definitely not), block paving, imprinted concrete, tarmac and concrete are all possible options but it should be realised there is a downside to all  external surfacing.  It may be a maintenance option is necessary (block paving and imprinted concrete for example).  We always recommend all possible driveway surface solutions are considered carefully.  Consider why you need to address the area, or if it is just a cosmetic solution you required.

A recent call over the winter time has been for a decorative resin bonded stone covering  cost for slippery imprinted driveways.  Unfortunately the client was too far for us to be able to complete the works, but we are more than happy to chat and give as much information as possible.

The caller had a “very slippery pattern imprinted concrete drive” which was also on a slope! They had seen one of our posts and was after potential for an anti slip decorative resin bonded stone covering cost.

The process would involve very little preparation work as the structure in place had good integrity so we were able to provide an indication of the cost based on a natural finish although we do need to have a site visit to ensure the suitability.

At Drive-Cote Ltd our process of resurfacing concrete, tarmac and imprinted concrete provides a hand laid resin bonded aggregate installation.   Our primary installs are for residential driveways paths and patios meaning those awkward to reach spots and  awkward access areas are easily dealt with.

Recently we have been requested to quote on an area of concrete for a rear patio.  The unusual thing about this job is the fact that the hand laid resin bonded aggregate quote was for a dual purpose – as the surface was also a roof for a basement.

The client wanted a solution which would seal the concrete patio area.  Our resin bonded stone would have been perfect as being a non porous surface it would have prevented the ingress of water.  At the same time this surface would provide an anti slip and protective coating for the patio area.   However unfortunately for this customer even though our hand laid resin bonded aggregate would have been ideal, they had recently suffered a flooding of the area which had caused major damage. 

They were a little too late with our quote, as had the resin bonded surface been in place it would have prevented this flooding through to the basement.

The client has been considering our install as it would have saved them a considerable amount of money and disturbance.  They would have been able to leave the concrete slab in place allowing it to be used as a base for the resin.

In the past we have covered a local terrace for a customer and some 10 years on this is still as good as new.

In January 2014 we talked about a imprinted concrete resurfacing enquiry and detailed as follows

“This request stems back to a conversation we had with an enquiry over 2 years ago.  During t

hat time they have been contemplating their options.  A large expanse of imprinted concrete (adjoining to the neighbours property) has been causing them issues.  They have sealed and tried to anti slip the area but so far have been unsuccessful in creating what they considered to be a safe walking area.

Whilst this surface is structurally sound and there are no issues on this aspect and even more sadly it is a new and recently installed surface (less than 5 years), it is a problem to these customers.

We have now been called in to provide resurfacing slippy imprinted concrete surfaces options for this customer.  We have yet to view the area, but have been able to google and can see straight away the issues.  If there had been an area left as a walkway then they may not be in this position”
