We had an interesting discussion recently with a potential client wanting to discuss the resin bound and resin bonded options for a leafy patio area.

Our response to the question which is the best resin bound or resin bonded ? was as follows –

“Good morning and apologies for the delay in reaffirming our chat a few days ago.
You were quite correct in there being 2 types of resin and you were right to try and clarify the differences in purpose, installation and requirements etc.

The two types (we will list as it is easier for clarity and to be aware of the strengths, purposes and differences between the 2 resins).

Resin bonded (Bonds to a surface below)

Applied to an existing surface – concrete or tarmac (non porous surface) for vehicles, possibly slabbs/paving if foot traffic only.
NOT porous
Less expensive
Does not affect existing levels
Anti slip and weed resilient
Can be completed in a day

Resin bound (bound in a mixer and trowelled on)

Applied to a prepared compacted hardcore type surface (porous) existing surfaces should be removed unless already porous
Is porous
More expensive
Will affect existing levels if applied to existing surfaces (which we don’t advocate)
Requires more preparation work and will probably require (skips) waste /rubble removal

For your particular purpose – in our opinion it would be difficult to advocate either of these resin applications. As you explained you do have an ongoing fight with weeds and growth in the non slabbed areas in between the slabs/garden/path areas.

We would suggest a keener management of the area (s) that are causing you the concern – perhaps ask your gardener to look at a resin based jointing compound sometimes known as a patio mortar.

There are also patio (which covers quite a wide field of surfaces – blocks and paving slabbs for eg) maintenance companies a local one is CDS – https://cdsservicesltd.co.uk/. We would suggest trying them and seeing if they can help to try and seal the area more?

However one important aspect to consider is that if an area is fully sealed and becomes non porous where does the water go? By the same token if you leave it as it is, it will always require management weed control as you aware aware weeds don’t only grow up but they embed and flourish!

What we all need to realise (and we have been guilty of this) is that nothing is perfect! Its a case of trying to work out the best for you and the area causing you concern which is what you are doing.

You live in a beautiful part of Nottinghamshire but that has a price! Weeds and growth on your patio/path garden area will be more occurring because of the very nature of the area you live in. We always say to clients and enquirers one shoe does not fit all.

I hope we have given you a little more information to make a more informed decision. Sometimes it is better to stick with what you have and continue to work with it.
Good luck”

You will see we have not suggested either as an option. Resin is an amazing and resilient product but it is not always the right product.

resin bonded stone pricing is a popular subject now the fairweather gardening time has arrived.

As with most building materials an estimate ( an approximate) is just what it says. A quote ( a fixed charge) is a price for doing the job.

It is not always possible for certain trades and businesses to provide a quote, only an estimate. Why? Because until the job is started for example there could be unforseen works costs that will need to adjust the price of the service.

How much is the job? Can it be based on a standard for resin bonded stone pricing?

Prices for resin have recently increased. The pandemic, delays in supplies and raw materials costs. Then there is the demand. Raw materials make up 50-90 percent of the resin cost.

The simplicity of our installs (simplicity in our case meaning uncomplicated) is one of the benefits. Unlike installing a brand new surface when it is necessary to remove the existing.

Our resin bonded stone pricing is based on a few basic principals

The size of the area to be resurfaced

The condition of the surface to be resin bonded

The type of specialist media required

There are other factors involved but the above are the main criteria.

Resin Bonded Gravel and Resin Bonded Aggregate providing an alternative to the usual options for your driveway path or patio. If it’s not broke don’t fix it.

resin steel anti slip surfacing

This week we have received a request to provide anti slip surfacing for a steel surface for a local company. This is a project we will be looking to complete at the earliest as, as always resurfacing works are required as a matter or urgency.

This week the forecast is a frosty outlook, so it will not be an option to complete the works too soon.

Each year the UK is subject to diverse winter weathers! Snow and rain, frost and sunshine! These elements can create issues on tarmac and concrete surfaces (you only have to look at the roads and potholes). With our resin bonded surfacing being quite aggressive to the touch, there is not much out there for the driveway paving and patio surfaces to rival the superb anti slip qualities Drive-Cote’s resin bonded aggregate can provide.

We have been working with resin now for a number of years see our previous posts on works and enquiries.

concrete resin bonded overlay alternative

Concrete resin bonded overlay is an alternative to the more back breaking options if you already have a concrete or tarmac surface in place.

The many benefits of a concrete resin bonded overlay include

Recycling the existing surface

Can be completed in a day without the mess and disruption associated with the removal and replacement of the existing concrete or tarmac

High anti slip properties (particularly with resin bonded resurfacing) that no other product in the market place at present can compete with

Choice of colours and finishes for a concrete resin bonded overlay (don’t take our word for it this local supplier of specialist media offer a varied selection)

Virtually weed and maintenance free

No change to existing levels with a concrete resin bonded overlay

No major noisy or invasive machinery or equipment is required as a hand laid process bespoke and individual projects are created. The work involved in removing an existing surface (and more so if it is a good solid structure) is time consuming, costly and physical.

This helpful post goes on to say “The nature of concrete is that it is very strong and using a breaker is the only real way of cutting it up into manageable size pieces so that it can be cleared. There are a number of different breakers available or jackhammers as they are sometimes called. Typically a builder would use a hydraulic breaker as shown in the picture, or a pneumatic breaker powered by a compressor. For DIY, an electric heavy duty breaker would be more appropriate. These are readily available from tool hire shops and you should take the time to familiarise yourself with the operation of the particular tool that you hire. Hire shops will run through the method and provide you with instructions but, make sure you ask if you are unsure about anything” confirms that a lot of physical work can be involved and the question is why when it is not necessary if a concrete resin bonded overlay is a possible.

This client only had a small resin bonded gravel access requirement. The driveway was an old tarmac driveway in need of anti slip resurfacing. This elderly couple wanted to minimise any future driveway maintenance issues and decided that our resin bonded gravel access resurfacing would benefit the driveway and the clients themselves for the future.

We also had an enquiry this week from Hertfordshire. The caller had seen a forum we had commented on. Unfortunately, the enquiry was not within our radius. We can only work realistically and effectively within a 60 miles of our base here Mansfield.

We have this week completed another local job this time in Belper. The resin bonded gravel access requirement was very important to this client being a wheelchair user. The existing surface in place was very uneven and the tarmac was degraded. It was also damaged around manholes all of which were repaired prior to the application. Certain areas had also dropped around the entrance ramp where water was gathering. Part of our preparation works were to build up with our specialist remedial compound. This then graded the slope and diverted the gathering water to a more suitable area.

Resurfaced and completed in a day. No mess and no disruption. Other driveway installs do not have the same benefits as a resin bonded gravel access drive. As it seals further the already impermeable surface it prevents the ingress and absorption of water. This mean weeds and seeds cannot grow up nor can they embed in the existing surface. No weeds no maintenance. Well virtually. As an external surface it is vulnerable to the elements. However, our resin bonded aggregate is designed for commercial purposes and therefore is well above driveway specification.

Ask to see a drive like this Warsop resin bonded gravel access near you. Mansfield, Warsop, Ashfield, Bolsover, Brinsley, Hucknall, New Houghton, Kirkby in Ashfield. Mansfield based Drive-Cote Ltd.

correct resin aggregate – How important is it?

VERY important to use the correct resin aggregate is the answer!

The correct resin aggregate can make or break a job. The size and the quality of the aggregate is extremely important and one such supplier of aggregates is Derbyshire Aggregates who for the last 30 years have provided for pebble dashing and also supplied chippings and landscape aggregates for paths and drives. This then led them onto specialist and coloured aggregates which in due course led into the resin bonded and bound markets in the UK needing clean, dry, hard, coloured aggregates of a high quality and consistency.

Derbyshire Aggregates are one of the specialist suppliers we use due to their reliability and quality.

Earlier in the year we talked about rust spots which in the past have been an issue and it is extremely important that your installer is aware of the potential issues with using the incorrect resin aggregate.

We advised the client to return to the installer and we have been updated as follows

“Afternoon Faith, I would appreciate if you could inform Simon that the drive surface will be recovered and re-laid. Company who supplied aggregate will re supply for free and the company that laid the drive will also perform all work for free. Good result but shame it occurred in first place. Please thank Simon for his knowledgeable and sound advice. The problem is with one of the aggregates containing iron!! Will choose a different colour this time. Original colour is a honey/oatmeal type colour. All the best”

If the correct resin aggregate had been used in the first place it would have saved time, money and a concerned customer. Having said that it is a credit to the company concerned as they are remedying the situation and will now be using the correct resin aggregate.

There are various remedies to remove rust spots but generally if the actual media has the metals incorporated in it (such as the one used here) you will not be able to remove the rust spots as they will continue to leach due to the oxidation if the metal in the aggregate.

Recovering with the correct resin aggregate is the only real solution. Whether it is a resin bonded stone or resin bound installation.

Mansfield, Southwell, Tibshelf, Huthwaite, Ripley Ollerton, Wellow, Swanwick, Somercotes and Chesterfield call for a free quote. Not sure of the finish you would like? Ask away.

Resin bonded stone and aggregate finishes can protect and ensure longevity of your exiswting surface.

self healing concrete news

Self-healing concrete technologies are currently being developed by a team of researchers from the School of Engineering at the University of Cardiff, in Wales. Through a project called Materials for Life (M4L), the researchers are conducting the first major trial of these materials in the UK. – See more .

Evidently the team’s goal is to “create sustainable and resilient systems that continually monitor, regulate, adapt, and repair themselves without the need for human intervention,” said Cardiff professor and M4L principal investigator Bob Lark in a press release. This is especially important given the estimated £40bn ($57.8bn) spent annually on the concrete-intensive maintenance and repair of these structures in the U.K., the team says. The M4L trial is underway at a road-construction site near the A465 highway in South Wales, where the researchers can view the performance under real-world conditions.

Can this be real or is it a joke? Perhaps in the future there won’t even be the need for resin bonded resurfacing?

I’m not sure this is a possible but if we can get to the moon who knows what is possible?

Resin technology has advanced over the last 30 years and currently it serves well as a product to resurface poor damaged and tired concrete. Some of the benefits of resin bonded aggregate being it uses existing surfaces, can be completed in a day and does not affect existing levels. We would find it hard to compare with the benefits that this self healing concrete news brings such as

shape-memory polymers activated by electrical current

healing agents made from organic and inorganic compounds

one with capsules containing bacteria and healing agents

Concrete may not necessarily be the most attractive product but it is extremely strong and durable and can last a lifetime.

impermeable resin

Lots of enquiries this week from pool surrounds to concrete and grassed areas in need of addressing with impermeable resin bonded aggregate.

Unfortunately one was in Tiverton and the other one in Liverpool, so not really feasible for Drive-Cote to complete. However a quote in Nuthall and one to complete Kirkby in Ashfield may prove to be potential.

Resin installs always depend on the surfaces already down but also includes the needs of the potential customers and funds available and that is just some of the considerations.

We pride ourselves at Drive-Cote Ltd on assessing each individual case on its own merits and just as importantly providing an honest service. If it is not the right option then we won’t quote.

[See image gallery at www.drive-cote.co.uk]

We always highlight to our enquiries that there are two options of resin installations available. One being porous (permeable resin) one non porous (impermeable resin) both being dependant on the needs or purposes of the client/surface. All our advice is free, our quotes are free and we try to be honest and open at all times.

There is no wrong or right just a correct product for the correct purpose.

For instance no matter how permeable a surface is if the correct substrate is not in place it won’t permeate fully and can be a potential for the freeze thaw process.

We at Drive-Cote have a preference for impermeable resin installs for a number of reasons including

No weeds

Uses existing surface

Virtually no maintenance

Doesn’t affect existing levels.

All of which are less applicable to impermeable resin.

Weeds can get a hold on the resin bound surface (permeable paving) – they can embed in the resin and as a result of this damage the surface.

Using existing surfaces (concrete and tarmac which are impermeable) for resin bound surfaces means you are putting a porous on to a non porous so where does the water permeate to creating a need to ensure that the correct falls, correct substrate and/ or drainage is in place.

Maintenance is a need for bound installs, clearing of debris and ensuring weeds do not achieve weed growth. Moss and algae are more prevalent as like weeds with a porous surface they can get a grasp on the surface and create a slippy surface.

Resin bonded stone which is an impermeable surface does not affect existing levels as it is only about 5-8mm in depth on install. However being a tough and durable surface (used for anti slip surfacing on roadways) it is well above spec and requirements of a residential driveway path or patio).

It would be nice to be able to say that the perfect driveway path or patio surface exists but that is not the case. Just as an example if you hate the idea of maintenance then consider the fact that imprinted concrete and block paving both need maintenance.

resin bound or a resin bonded surface

Local enquiry querying whether to go for a resin bound or a resin bonded surface. The client had already had a quote for resin bound paving but was a little confused as to how that would work with the resin bound being permeable and the tarmac he has in place being impermeable.

The quoting company had said that the permeable resin bound surfacing would allow the water to permeate and infiltrate through and then would just drain away naturally. The caller had been mulling over the options and then came to us for a bonded quote. During the course of our conversation he did highlight the fact that he already had puddles and that was one of his concerns. There was a backfall to his property so if as the quoting company says, it drains away it would all fall to his property which would actually create different problem.

In our conversation I would say it wasn’t that the permeable resin bound company were necessarily incorrect on their idea. They may well have intended to install aco drainage across the front of his property to catch the excess water but he did not seem to be aware that this may be an option. His main concern was that as he already had puddles then that would mean the fall is not correct to ensure drainage, so if the water sits under the resin bound then it is only the top surface that is permeable. So surely the permeability is not as efficient was his understanding.
There is no quick fast fix for drainage and permeable surfaces. One shoe does not fit all. It depends if your budget is restricted, it depends if you want a weed free and anti slip option. It depends if run off water and/or the fall to the surface is correct.

Here at Drive-Cote Ltd we try and provide as much information as possible. We take each installation on its own merits. It is not just a case of a resin bound or a resin bonded surface – your choice. More a resin bound or a resin bonded surface which is the right and best choice for your driveway and the surface in question.
Kimberley, Brampton, Wingerworth, Bonsall , Ravenshead, Killamarsh, Ravenshead, Kirkby in Ashfield, Mansfield callus for an example of our works near to you. Anti slip and virtually weed and maintenace free.
