Completed a Ravenshead Nottinghamshire resin drive job this week. This client found it necessary to look for the options available. His criteria being to resurface his existing tarmac drive. Why?

Because it was old and tired-

Not really

Because he wanted to extend the surface and make it look uniform

Not really.

Because this client had been visited by a less than honest tarmac company (no idea who but we believe not a local installer). This company had called round to quote and whilst our client was out they had returned. They had started to excavate his driveway with no prior permission. The intention being to start works and therefore make it impossible for them not to have a driveway installation.

Fortunately a neighbour realised what was happening and sent them on their way. On further investigation by the local resident they had found that this had happened on three other properties.

For this Ravenshead Nottinghamshire resin drive to be completed we needed to complete a couple of things first.

Stage 1

Remove the damaged area of tarmac. Fortunately the damaged area of tarmac was only about 12sqm in total – re compacting hardcore, laying basecoat and topping. In addition the client decided to have the driveway width extended by 600mm. The whole length of the driveway. This was to enable better access when getting in and out of their car. (This is one of the benefits of resin by way of adding areas and then resurfacing all with resin bonded stone so that it looks uniform). New concrete edges were installed after the area was excavated, hardcore installed and compacted. A basecoat and topping of tarmac laid. This was then left for 6 weeks to cure to ensure weathering and to make sure this Ravenshead Nottinghamshire resin drive job is completed correctly.

Stage 2

Thoroughly seal the new tarmac prior to application of our resin bonded stone resurfacing. Our client chose a light buff finish to visually lift the side elevation. This side aspect is quite narrow and with a colour finish it would make the area seem narrower. Some slabs which were originally down the length of the driveway were relaid on the front elevation path. This was completed to form a double width allowing a much safer and easier entry.

Particular care needs to be taken when completing resin drive preparatory works prior to the installation.

99% of all our resin drive preparatory works are completed with the minimum of mess and disruption. This compliments the same no fuss no nonsense process of installing a resin drive path or patio.

Prior to resurfacing with our resin bonded stone, our specialist resin drive preparatory works are completed. We aim to complete usually the day before if possible. Whether they be minor defects or more invasive cracks, we ensure that the preparation works are carried out to the required specification. This is to ensure a good clean resin bonded aggregate application. This same process is applicable for driveways paths and patios. However all preparation works are surface specific. By that we mean tarmac, concrete and imprinted concrete all having varying requirements. resin drive preparatory works

Cleaning of the surface to be resin bonded is key as well. Grease, oil and existing stains can detract from a clean install.

Pot holes and low spots are addressed. This is part of the resin drive preparatory works process in order to correct using our specialist filler. The filler we use is quite an expensive product. To ensure our resin drive preparatory works provide the optimum base for the resin installation, we need a fast setting waterproof and frost proof polymer modified filler. This filler is a trowelled product and when cured ( in less than 2-3 hours) it provides a very tough and flexible repair.

It expands and contracts with the sub base ensuring there is no potential for cracking in the future. As with most projects diy or commercial the preparation works are the foundation of a solid, reliable and quality installation. Therefore our resin drive preparatory works are of paramount importance to ensure longevity and durability for the end product.

Later on I will go on to explain some important aspects with regard to the specialist stone granules we use, because in addition to the resin drive preparatory work, the aggregate has a major bearing on the wear and tear and longevity.

We have received an enquiry this week from a local resident looking towards resurfacing the existing concrete driveway.

Because we market quite extensively on the internet we are able to reach more outlying Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and East Midlands villages and help them to protect and preserve their driveways paths and patios. In this ever changing climate, the elements each year take their toll on our external surfaces. The salt and and grit have a two fold effect. It serves to provide an anti slip option. But it also serves to be abrasive on tarmac, concrete and imprinted concrete – rock salt offers an alternative, but that is not without it’s disadvantages.

Last year we reported on the harmful effects on our pets ( remember Olive and her shoes) so we need to be quite respectful with what we use on our driveway path and patio surfaces.

Currently we are looking to complete a Ravenshead driveway ( this one is tarmac) this week, but this is providing the weather is favourable. We regularly see where some companies say that in freezing temperatures – the resin will cure. This is not necessarily the case. The resin has a curing ability above freezing however, once again this is dependant on the surface, how large the surface to be covered is, whether it is an old or new surface.

Here at Drive-Cote Ltd we use many types of stone granule both locally and internationally sourced and aim to be project specific with the aggregate resin driveway choice. We do aim to source locally, but not always an option.

An aggregate resin driveway choice ( or indeed path or patio and even commercial projects) is of paramount importance as the granule needs to be specific for the purpose. Vehicle traffic and foot traffic do not have the same requirements and therefore careful selection of the right stone is critical for the durability and for the appearance.

The finished job can vary, visually, tremendously depending on the aggregate resin driveway choice. This includes colour and durability. Batches can have an impact on the finish as well. Only stone from the same batch is used on each individual job. The reason for this being so as to avoid patching or swirling.

The size of the granule when aggregate resin driveway choice alternatives are given varies. In our day to day projects we recommend either 1-3 mm or 2-5mm for pathways and foot traffic. Then there is 2-5mm on the main driveways. As we regularly say – the anti slip properties for a resin drive are a major benefit. The 2-5mm granule is our preferred aggregate resin driveway choice, a this provides excellent traction for car tyres.

Different size granules and types have different qualities – for example hardness.

The hardest granule of choice is the imported Chinese bauxites which come in a selection of shades of buff and grey. They can finish a project off nicely, but tend to be expensive and quite angular and sharp. Perhaps not ideal for small children.

There are aesthetically pleasing choices available, but they should be hardwearing in addition to this so aggregate resin driveway choice is very important. Our most popular being the 2-5mm golden pea natural finish. This offers not only an attractive and durable finish but also quite a cost effective option. It has a more rounded profile than a Chinese bauxite, so it is not quite as aggressive.

Other options include the pigmented range which can come in any colour of choice. These granules undergo a treatment which coats the natural stone with a very hardwearing polyeurethane pigmented coating that is uv stable. This coating provides a rich looking consistent colour whether it be our most popular venetian red or the exotic blues and greens.

The options are more expensive and need to be ordered specially in.

Well nearly! This time of year “Mansfield resin drive completed in a day” can be a little bit of a white lie!

Only a little one though. Various aspects need to be considered at this time of year, light and the weather being two quite important factors. Hence the little white lie.

We have over the used found that a granule too small (say 1-3mm) will not wear the same as a granule of a more suitable size 3-5mm for example. having said that it depends on the purpose of the job – heavy traffic and whether it is for foot or vehicular traffic. Is anti slip key? In addition the substrate can have a bearing – concrete, tarmac, imprinted concrete. One shoe does not fit all. Block paving for instance can be resurfaced with resin bonded stone BUT only in specific cases. Driveway and gardens are no longer utility only, they can be the gateway to your home, they can enhance and improve and offer kerb appeal. Virtually weed free as well if you have a resin bonded aggregate finish.

Local University quote recently completed has necessitated a return visit to check on the necessary works that have been completed by the local builder. We need to do this to ensure that the surface is correct for our Nottingham resin bonded aggregate resurfacing.

The building company have laid a concrete slab and in addition have completed some remedial works for this Nottingham University medical school. The curing process of the concrete has been completed so they are eager for the resin bonded aggregate resurfacing works to be completed.

We intend to go out this week to establish a completion date for this Nottingham resin bonded aggregate resurfacing. However, as with all of our works, we are heavily dependent on “accommodating weather”!

Received an enquiry today from a local customer. The lady in question had been on our website and whilst it was informative and gave the lady a good basis of information it still made the client query whether concrete resin bonded aggregate or concrete resin bound aggregate should be the option for her patio area.

The current concrete patio area is only accessible via through the actual property. This is quite familiar in some of the older properties we quote for and particular in the Derbyshire countryside.

The existing falls to this concrete surface are correct, and the surface is only for foot traffic. So by rights the choice of either concrete patio requiring resin bonded aggregate or resin bound, are options.

However, as with all our projects, there are still dictates of the circumstances that can affect the options. In this particular case the existing surface is already at a correct level. To install a resin bonded aggregate would provide no problem as one of the key aspects is the fact that it does not affect existing levels, but it does protect the surface and extend the life of the concrete. However, this particular client was looking at a smooth surface which is where resin bound aggregate comes in.

Without having a look at this concrete patio requiring resin bonded aggregate it would be difficult to say, but on the conversation and information provided, it would seem unlikely that we would offer resin bound purely on the fact that it is trowelled on and needs to be a reasonable depth (10mm and more) in order to provide the correct finish. This would then really affect the existing levels of this concrete patio requiring resin bonded aggregate

This client made a very valid point though with regard to the problem of installing a permeable surface onto an impermeable surface. Because the fall is correct any water which permeates though would follow the fall as it slopes to the installed aco drain , so the freeze/thaw effect would be more or less eliminated.

This particular job is a good example of how diverse and circumstance specific each quote and installation is. Remember as well there is a difference with imprinted concrete and ordinary concrete. Tarmac too has a different porosity, so depending on the existing condition as to which options would be available.
