Warsop resin bonded gravel access

This week a Warsop resin bonded gravel access was a priority

This client only had a small resin bonded gravel access requirement.  The driveway was an old tarmac driveway in need of anti slip resurfacing.  This elderly couple wanted to minimise any future driveway maintenance issues and decided that our resin bonded gravel access resurfacing would benefit the driveway and the clients themselves  for the future.

We also had an enquiry this week  from Hertfordshire.  The caller had seen a forum we had  commented on.  Unfortunately, the enquiry was not within our radius. We can only work realistically and effectively within a 60 miles of our base here Mansfield.

resin bonded gravel anti slip

We have this week completed another local job this time in Belper.  The resin bonded gravel access requirement was very important to this client being a wheelchair user.  The existing surface in place was very uneven and the tarmac was degraded.  It was also damaged around manholes all of which were repaired prior to the application.  Certain areas had also dropped around the entrance ramp where water was gathering.  Part of our preparation works were to build up with our specialist remedial compound.  This then graded the slope and diverted the gathering water to a more suitable area.

Resurfaced and completed in a day. No mess and no disruption.  Other driveway installs do not have the same benefits as a resin bonded gravel access drive.  As it seals further the already impermeable surface it prevents the ingress and absorption of water.  This mean weeds and seeds cannot grow up nor can they embed in the existing surface. No weeds no maintenance.  Well virtually.  As an external surface it is vulnerable to the elements.  However, our resin bonded aggregate is designed for commercial purposes and therefore is well above driveway specification.

residential resin driveways

Country life wrote an article back in 2012 which included residential resin driveways and the benefits particularly with regard to the anti slip properties

Resin-bonded gravel
For more complicated driveways, those that have a steep incline, or for anyone looking for a low-maintenance option, probably the best option (albeit the most expensive one) is resin-bonded gravel. ‘For a senior house with a senior approach, this is the best long-term solution,’ believes Mr Eddell. It involves laying normal Tarmac with fine gravel bonded onto its surface, so that it looks like gravel. Even if it doesn’t sound quite right, it’s aesthetically pleasing and easy to maintain. ‘It looks the part and doesn’t wash away,’ says Russell Hill of Haringtons UK. ‘You’re left with a gravel feel, and it solves the problem of sloping drives.’ Another added advantage is that, during dry weather, there isn’t the issue that’s commonly found with gravel driveways of dust being kicked up by cars. ‘Picture a lovely manor house. The owners are having breakfast outside in the summer when the postman arrives in a cloud of dust,’ cautions Mr Eddell. ‘With a resin-bonded driveway, this won’t happen.’ A cheaper (if less elegant) finish would be to mix the gravel with some tar to hold it in place. This can also be used on sloping driveways, adds Edward Heaton of Property Vision

unusual resin bonded gravel quote Nottingham

August 30th, 2016

Unusual resin bonded gravel quote yesterday in the Rise Park area of Nottingham.

The customer had a concrete patio area laid 6-8 years ago which they then had professional tiled using small  (internal) ceramic floor tiles.  The patio area  for this unusual resin bonded gravel quote in total is about 80 sqm.

From a distance and on first impression this looked very stylish with a Mediterranean look highlighted by additional details.  Three round mosaics.

On close inspection however it appears that the tiles are hollow underneath with quite a number of the tiles being actually loose (you could physically lift them). The ingress of water over time had frozen and then thawed which had damaged the bond with the tile and the concrete.

unusual resin bonded gravel quote Nottingham

The tiles surprisingly though do not really show any major signs of damage which is surprising bearing in mind they were for internal use.

Our recommendation for this unusual resin bonded gravel quote

is to strip back all of the tiles and possibly save for reuse internally and clean up the concrete base.  We would then recommend a curing time for the base to dry out naturally before any further works are completed.

Once dried out we could then use the base as a surface for our resin bonded stone installation. Remedial works completed we will then seal the concrete prior to any install.

https://www.drive-cote.co.uk/product-details/resin-bonded-gravel-a-to-z/

The client had decided to have the works completed as not only had the loose tiles become a bit of a trip hazard, the actual walking surface of the tiles was extremely slippery.  Coupled with the clients increasing restricted mobility and the need for a low maintenance surface.

As we regularly highlight one of the key benefits of our resin bonded gravel install is the anti slip property  because the granules sit proud of the surface and it is a specialist media. The most common size of granules for a Resin Bonded driveway, path or patio is 2-5mm.  This size gives maximum grip and anti slip  properties though out all seasons.  We advise and guide with the most suitable granule for each project.

This unusual resin bonded gravel quote  came as a result of projects we have already completed in the same street some years ago.  No two enquiries are ever the same and this project serves to highlight this.  We will update with this project as the existing surface is quite different than the norm.

Varying resin driveway surface suitability

Varying resin driveway surface suitability

On our Drive-Cote Ltd website we have a form interested enquirers can complete.  On submission of this form it can Drive-Cote Ltd  the opportunity to discuss varying resin driveway surface suitability options.

Varying resin driveway surface suitability options are different for every job we discuss because of :-

The size of the existing surface

The access to the  required surface wanting a resin bonded install

The preferences of the client

The dictates of the site

The dictates of the local area

and most importantly

The suitability.

A recent enquiry  as an  example where the client had a mix of surfaces (tarmac and block paving) and they wanted to combine the two areas.  They had investigated online forums and websites with regard to the possible  options with regard to the varying resin driveway surface suitability choices.  (Please remember not all info is correct but it does serve to raise pertinent questions).  The client had researched on the internet with regard to the options for the block paved area as it had sunk (solid monolithic surfaces such as tarmac and concrete do not have the same issues with vehicle  support as block paving does)

Some clients have a budget to work to and some clients have no idea of potential cost and we are quite happy to explain and try and work with either.

Varying resin driveway surface suitability

Our resin bonded resurfacing is exactly what it says –  resin – bonded -resurfacing.  It is designed to work with existing solid monolithic surfaces such as tarmac and concrete.  Key benefits being

  • No removal of the existing as it uses the existing
  • Anti slip
  • No mess and disruption
  • Can be completed in a day
  • Attractive and durable.
  • Cost effective

The varying driveway surface suitability of this particular enquiry proved not to be a cost effective option nor would it be a no mess no disruption option.

The reasons being that the existing block paving would have to be removed and a new concrete or tarmac surface installed (30sqm) and this is quite a costly consideration and then the cost of the resin  together with the mess and disruption involved.

Our suggestion to this client was that he retains the tarmac (as this was perfectly fine and sound) but has the block paving removed for a solid concrete or tarmac surface to be installed.

We would recommend tarmac in this case as freshly laid it can be an attractive and purposeful install.  To add interest and to incorporate the already installed area we suggested a block paved or edged detail. This would mean that if the client wanted resin bonded gravel to resurface at a later stage then we could assist.  However with the potential detail as suggested for this entrance,   resin would not be an immediate necessary.

Resin bonded stone combines different surfaces

August 9th, 2016

Resin bonded stone combines different surfaces to produce a single uniform and attractive protective covering for a driveway path or patio. Tarmac, concrete or imprinted concrete, old and new, damaged or extensions.  Resin bonded gravel and provide a single  visual surface.

Resin bonded stone combines different surfaces

Resin Technology

Resin technology has advanced over the last 10 years or so.  Two of the original uses for resin were for  the roadways and in connection with heritage sites as resin bonded gravel provides an attractive entrance in keeping with the surroundings.  In addition Resin Bonded aggregate prevents the migration of stone which is always a maintenance requirement with loose gravel.  Resurfacing with resin bonded stone requires minimal overall attention and can be installed without the need to remove the existing surface.

When used on roadways (with the benefit of  the potential minimal curing time) it can provide anti skid and warning properties highlighted by colour options available.

Resin is also more popular with architects and landscapers not only for new builds but for redevelopment  areas as resin bonded stone combines different surfaces the old and the new concrete, tarmac and even imprinted concrete can be seen as one seamless uniform area.

Councils and local authorities  are now utilising the use of resin as it is an extremely durable product whether it is Epoxy or Polyurethane  the use of resin is world wide.

One company who work within the commercial sector and supply and manufacture  resins are Elite Chemicals  which was founded in 1971 and is a leading independently owned formulator and manufacturer of thermo-setting resin systems.

We have now been working within the residential sector for of 15 years and during this time have seen advancements in the use and efficacy of resin.  One so far insurmountable issue is the inability to apply the resin in wet weather.

Why does the tarmac or concrete need resurfacing?  – It can be a number of reasons such as stained, damaged or the need to encompass additional areas and to make then all look uniform.

There was a few posts on a forum on the RAC website highlighting tarmac and road conditions and a number of  ideas as to why the surface deteriorates.  Whatever the reason  Drive-Cote Ltd resin gravel installs Nottinghamshire can be a possible solution and can prevent further degrading of your driveway path and patio.

One of the contributors talks of a tarmac fairy   (to be taken with a pinch of salt I think)

Regarding the reporting of potholes, I reported a dreadful piece of road that was about 75 yards long at the entrance to Fox Covert cemetery in Warrington. The council contacted me and took further details. At my last visit all had been repaired quite well. So a big thanks to WBC roads dept for that. Why had no other people reported it inc WBC cemetery workers?? The answer is because they assume that the tarmac fairy will know and fill them in. If the local authority doesn’t know then they will get worse. Report all potholes to you local authority via email. It takes only a few minutes of your time and usually gets results. I managed to get may roads sorted by reporting them and indeed had large sections of pavement replaced because they were dangerous

Shirland resin bonded covering request

Shirland resin bonded covering

We have had an enquiry from an interested client this week looking for a Shirland resin bonded covering.  Unfortunately there was no actual surface in place.  We called round whilst in the Alfreton area at the request of the caller and we were able to email as follows

Thanks for the email and phone calls. Simon did call round whilst in the Alfreton area to have a quick look. Unfortunately the area is not suitable as a Shirland resin bonded covering.  It would require excavation and removal of the waste.  A compacted hardcore base would need to be installed, new levels established together with drainage considerations.   Then it could be infilled with a surface of choice i.e block paving, concrete or tarmac”.

Shirland resin bonded covering

We went on to explain

If you wanted an example of an approximate cost for tarmac for the area you had wanted for the Shirland resin bonded covering, you would be looking at approximately  £2665.  If you wish to have our subcontractors details then we can provide this for you”.

As we have said before not all surfaces are suitable and we try to be fair and honest.  We then received an email back

Hi Faith
Thanks for this, if I can get the excavation organised with a solid surface, does this mean I would not be able to install fixed bonded resin drive
?”

Not everyone wants to pay twice for a surface (once for the base and once for the resin) however not everyone has budget constraints.

We replied as follows

You could have resin on to any new concrete, imprinted concrete or tarmac, but it would mean you are paying for the tarmac (or concrete) and then an additional price for the resin. We utilise the resin for existing surfaces which means the cost is less. Do you want me to get Simon to give me a price on the resin so you have  a total price ?”.

Simon then priced for the resin install at around  £1845.00 to cover the tarmac so for both surfaces he would be looking  £4510 as an approximate  total cost.

bogus driveway company Mansfield Ashfield Bolsover

July 3rd, 2016

bogus driveway company

A recent local report in the Mansfield and Ashfield Chad of a bogus driveway company  ( it maybe a bogus resin driveway company we do not know) highlights the issues homeowners and driveway companies can be faced with by unscrupulous people.

The report about the bogus driveway company says

Cold callers claiming to be falsely representing a driveway surfacing company have been targeting properties in the Southwell area, it has been reported.

Trading Standards says the bogus businessmen are knocking on doors and telling people they had previously conducted surfacing at the property and that it now needs overlaying or re-spraying.

The caller appears to be falsely claiming to represent another genuine driveway business who do not cold call their customers.

To report suspicious traders, call 03454 04 05 06.”

Nearly 4 years ago there was a similar case with a  bogus driveway company also reported by the Chad and the report stated

A man knocked on the door of the couple’s home in Jenford Street  Mansfield at around 11am, produced an identity card and purported to be from a water company.

He kept the pair occupied while another person is believed to have entered their house through the front door and stolen a quantity of cash. No-one was injured in the incident.

The man, who spoke with a local accent, is described as white and in his early 30s. He was around 5ft 7ins tall, of slim build, with short dark hair. He was wearing a white shirt, a sleeveless pullover and black trousers.

Police patrols have been stepped-up in the area in a bid to deter potential burglars and provide reassurance to the local community.

Officers are urging residents to be cautious. Never let strangers into your house. Ask to see identification and phone the company they claim to be working for to verify they are who they say they are.

If in any doubt, simply do not open the door.

Keep external doors locked at all times, even if you are in the back garden, and be mindful of leaving open windows unattended.

Don’t leave valuables on display or near windows or doors, and do not keep large amounts of money on the premises”

There are always opportunists and unfortunately driveways and roofs seems to be  regularly targeted.

Read some guidelines by  age uk when dealing with doorstep callers.

block paving resin bonded stone covering Ravenshead

We are regularly contacted to be asked about block paving resin bonded stone covering and the options available.  Well to put it simply there are none.  Or at least there should be none.

We had a recent enquiry from a caller in Ravenshead saying that a company had offered to complete a block paving resin bonded stone covering for  their driveway.  They had had a quote provided and the installers had said that the existing block paving surface was fine as a base for the resin bonded stone.  Evidently there were a few low spots where the block paving had already sunk, but the company were stating that the block paving resin bonded stone covering would be fine as it was porous and this would alleviate any standing water issues.

We totally disagree with this for a number of reasons.

Resin bonded stone is not porous resin bound stone is

You cannot provide a block paving resin bonded stone covering for a non monolithic surface when a vehicle is going to use the surface.

Blocks can move independently and this would in turn stress the resin therefore potentially causing breaks and cracks in the resin.

Resin bonded stone and resin bound paving both require good sound solid surfaces such as concrete, tarmac and imprinted concrete.
