Kimberley tarmac driveway resurfacing with Resin Bonded Aggregate

Kimberley  tarmac driveway resurfacing with Resin Bonded Aggregate

This old and tired tarmac driveway in Kimberley was having a new lease of life with our Resin Bonded Aggregate resurfacing  option.

  • The problem-   Tired and old degrading  tarmac with a small puddle situation near the front door
  • The solution-    Resurfacing with Resin Bonded Aggregate and minor works to address the puddling.

THE RESULT

An anti slip attractive durable and protective finish –  Resin Bonded Aggregate

TIME SPAN

1 day to prep   1 day to resurface.  No mess!   No disruption!   No skips!  No waste removal!

We have  already completed a cut out to form a soakaway  to alleviate the small puddling.  This  is approximately 2 ft long and 6 inches wide and in filled with a decorative/free draining detail (another option would be to provide small drainage holes on completing the Resin Bonded Aggregate). Either way this will allow free draining of this very small puddle.

Not an overly large job (less than 50sqm)  and with the driveway there is  easy access  for both vehicles and workmen.  The property benefits from a well kept and well established  garden area and the client wanted to bring the old tired tarmac driveway up to standard.

The tarmac is actually structurally sound but over the period  of time( in excess of 20 years)  the tarmac was degrading and breaking up.  (So if its not broke don’t fix it !)  The current fall of the driveway is directed to a large gulley which supports all drainage  and will continue to do so.  Our Resin Bonded Aggregate  will  not affect this

Prior to the Resin Bonded Aggregate resurfacing option this clients  choice would probably have been  to have the tarmac removed .  Then possibly had to apply for planning permission with an alternative surface such as block paving, imprinted concrete or concrete installed.  Or  reinstall tarmac.  Time consuming,  invasive and messy.  Unlike Resin Bonded Aggregate resurfacing

The existing levels are currently fine and with the Resin Bonded Aggregate our Kimberely clients will benefit from an attractive. durable and anti slip and virtually maintenance free  surface without affecting existing levels.

The lads are out today installing the Resin Bonded Aggregate and I will update this information later with some images.

Concrete driveways, Resin driveways and suds compliance

March 28th, 2013

Concrete driveways, Resin driveways and suds compliance

Are you  Suds compliant?  Are Resin driveways?  Do you know what it means?

The following is an extract from a contractor who was discussing permeable paving on a forum

I have installed  3 permeable paving jobs in last 5 years. One was for an Eco Development, the other two were on large flat courtyard / parking areas that had buildings on 3 sides.
On the above projects permeable block paving was justified and worked great.

However, installing permeable paving on normal domestic drives is total nonsense.decorative drainage
What is the point in spending an extra 25-35% for permeable paving when the water all goes to the same place. Let me explain – Traditional block paving – we install Aco Channels at bottom of driveway or at the lowest point, which are connected into a soakaway, with an overflow into surface water drains if the ground is not ideal for soakaways.. Permeable paving – water drains through the blocks and sub stone, drains to the lowest point and then into a soakaway.

How can anyone justify the extra spend when it does the same thing – if you comply with the regs.

Someone has installed a permeable drive locally. Its 2.5m wide by 6m long – single car driveway. Drive slopes from garage to the road by about 2m, there are walls on both sides of the driveway. There is nowhere for a soakaway, unless you are going to pump water up 2m in height.  Where is the water going from the permeable drive?  Its going to collect under the paving at the lowest point and drain slowly onto the highway.

I agree with Tony, that all commercial projects should be Permeable, where possible.Kings Clipstone Resin driveway

How many supermarket car parks have you been in where there are hundreds of puddles – either badly laid tar or drains cannot  cope.”

The important thing with drainage and permeability is that it needs to be correct for the application.  With   Resin driveways as they are  not porous, assessment needs to be made prior to any  type of driveway resurfacing – that not only means Resin driveways but block paving, slabs tarmac and concrete. That does not mean that it has to be permeable paving.  If a new hard surface is installed there are various factors to consider – the type of soil for instance can have a vast effect on surface water. Will it drain to your garden or to the main drain system?

Winter weather in spring – what’s your concrete like?

March 25th, 2013

Winter weather in spring – what’s your concrete like?

  • Caused by persistent easterly winds from frozen continental Europe which have chilled North Sea to 4C or 5C
  • Average temperature is currently around 3C – normally should be nearer 6C
  • Coldest March on record was in 1962 with a mean temperature of 1.9C, which will not be beaten this year
  • Could be colder than the more recent cold March of 1987 with a mean temperature of 3.3C
  • Forecasters say the cold could hang on until the bitter end of March

About Concrete

Concrete is a composite consisting of the following main constituents: cement, aggregates, water, and admixtures.  It is a material that can be cast into different shapes, is durable, is the most attractive construction material in terms of compressive strength (construction material with highest strength per unit cost), and its increasing use is fundamental for sustainable construction.

Resin Bonded Aggregate – What is it? Can I use it on my driveway, path or patio?

March 21st, 2013

Resin Bonded Aggregate – What is it?  Can I use it on my driveway, path or patio?

Resin Bonded Aggregate  is an anti  skid surfacing product which uses a combination of resin and aggregates hence the Resin Bonded Aggregate name.

It provides a durable and protective resurfacing option for your driveway path and patio and is applied as a rule to tarmac, concrete and imprinted concrete.  Resin Bonded Aggregate can provide a weed free option as it prevents the ingress of water.

Resin Bonded Aggregate Our supplier of aggregates  has  developed a range of products  that can give bright vibrant colours, more natural tones or a specialist mix which can be chosen to suit.   These  Aggregates are selected from quarries throughout the UK and Europe.  The choice and range available has been developed over the past 25 years and whilst not an exhaustive selection  here are some  options available

Resin Bonded Aggregate systems need an existing base or surface  typically  tarmac, asphalt, concrete  known as a monolithic material.

This  is required as the application of resin in a Resin Bonded Aggregate system is spread over the existing surface and then has the chosen aggregate applied.

The driveway, path or patio does have to be assessed and one shoe does not fit all.  For example we have been out to view drives where the actual substrate or core is not structurally sound and as a result of this we have not been able to work with the resin on the existing surface.

The cleaning  and preparation of the surfaces should be a very important aspect.  Not only is the Resin Bonded Aggregate relying on the soundness of the existing concrete or tarmac surface, it is important that the surface is cleaned properly with all loose materials and dust removed and sealed if necessary. Any contaminates such as oil need to be removed as does the removal of any algae.  If not removed this can affect the efficacy of the application.

As specialist installers of over 12  years experience, we can discuss your requirements.

Resin Drive – Can It work for your Driveway Path or Patio

March 20th, 2013

Resin Drive  Can it work for your Driveway Path or Patio ?

Resin drives are a fairly new option in the residential market place but we have been installing Resin Drives and Resin Paths and Patios for in excess of 12 years.

We aim to work with existing surfaces such  as tarmac, concrete and imprinted concrete.

Why?Nottingham concrete driveway resurfaced in pigmented red resin

Well if it’s not broke don’t fix it!. All too often we as homeowners think the only alternative is to remove what can seem to be a defective driveway path or patio such as tarmac or concrete.  Or if an additional surface is required a uniformity of surface is what is required and we think the only choice is to remove the existing

In both these cases  Resin Bonded  Gravel  can be applied.  Resin Bonded Gravel can extend the life of an existing concrete, tarmac or imprinted concrete  surface providing a durable, anti slip attractive Resin Drive path or patio.

Resin Bonded gravel can also incorporate new and old surfaces to provide a uniformity to your driveway path or patio

Tarmac is having a lot of issues at the moment  due to the amount of water, and the freeze thaw effect which can damage tarmac quite aggressively  potholes are a prime example.

As with a lot of external surfaces if they are not maintained then deterioration can be rapid.  This is where Resin Bonded Aggregate can help.

Due to the impermeable qualities of the product, water cannot get though so  it cannot freeze.  Therefore the freeze thaw effect will not damage the Resin Bonded gravel  surface.  This also means a virtually  weed free surface.dscn2828a

During our 12 years we have seen an upsurge in the interest and demand for Resin Bonded and Resin Bound choices and an upsurge in the companies working within Resin Drive sector.

Resin drive resurfacing by Drive-Cote Ltd for Concrete driveway

Resin drive resurfacing by Drive-Cote Ltd  for Concrete driveway

This client was having difficulty with mobility and the slabs on the periphery of the area. Whilst not overly uneven it did create a difficulty for the resident of the property on the Chesterfield/Sheffield border.  Our Resin Drive resurfacing solved this problem.

We do not advocate resurfacing slabs if a vehicle is being driven on the area as the Resin Bonded Aggregate is designed to work with solid monolith surfaces.  However as this part of the surface is only for foot traffic, we can resurface with a little more prep work as can be seen here.

Part of the requirement of this particular customer was the speed of installation.  This is where a Resin Drive  resurfacing choice for  a concrete driveway can really benefit the home owner.

Straight forward and easily accessible projects such as this create very minimal inconvenience to the  client.  We even find that some clients prefer to go shopping while their Resin Drive is installed.

When they go out they have a boring and tired concrete driveway.  When they come back a matter of hours later they have a brand new surface a Resin Drive.  An  attractive, anti slip and weed free Resin Drive

In this instance we have no block paving edge.  The detail  on this project was in infill of slate which contributes to efficient drainage but if your driveway has an edge, we can either incorporate or detail this.  On a  recently completed project the manhole was made a feature of with a block paved edge

Tarmac Driveway Path or Patio Can they be affected by potholes

March 17th, 2013

Tarmac Driveway Path or Patio

Can they be affected by potholes

In a  report by the BBC news this week

”  ‘Millions of cars’ damaged by Potholes

A third of drivers have suffered damage to their vehicles from potholes over the last two years, a survey suggests. A third also rated the condition of their local roads as poor, very poor or “terrible”, according to the AA/Populus survey of nearly 23,000 drivers.

Meanwhile, the Asphalt Industry Alliance says councils may need as much as £10.5bn to bring the country’s “crumbling roads” into good condition. The government said it had given councils over £3bn to maintain roads.

Only 10% of those who took part in the AA survey rated their local roads very good or excellent, with the lowest ratings going to Scotland and the Yorkshire and Humber region.  Councils pay out millions annually to compensate for damage to vehicles”

Recent heavy rain has been cited as the main reason behind the increase

In 2009 potholes were evident and the question asked was “is there a north south divide ?”

There is a science to stopping potholes and  flooding and icy temperatures have been contributory  causes for the damage to many  roads.

This therefore can affect your tarmac driveway path or patio and as the report says with regard to the science of stopping potholes  if you haven’t maintained the surface then deterioration will just continue.

A recent works we completed in Kirkby in Ashfield will mean that the existing tarmac surface with have extended life due to the protective qualities of our Resin Bonded Stone.   A Resin Drive could be the answer.

Remember we can resurface your existing concrete, tarmac, imprinted concrete driveway path  or patio with Resin Bonded Gravel.  Remember we can work up to a 60 mile radius of our base in Mansfield – Sleaford, Barnby Dun, Edwinstowe, Gamston Village, Clipstone. Concrete driveway path or patio

March 15th, 2013

Concrete driveway path or patio or just a general base for a garage, shed, conservatory or dog kennel. How good is yours?concrete drive resurfaced with resin bonded aggregate

Concrete can be used for driveways, paths and patios and it uses are not only restricted to  durability  and longevity but on a decorative level as well.  It  can also be used as a base conservatories and sheds.  Timber frames are created to help lay concrete.  The timber frame holds the  wet concrete.

Calculating the required  volume of  a ready-mix supply  can be a little confusing but simply multiply  length x width x depth of the space you need to fill.  This will give you  the cubic size or volume  of the  required.

There are few  products out there that match concrete when it comes to sustainability.  When installed properly it should last decades ( which is why we work with concrete  and use it as a base for our Resin Bonded Aggregate works).

It can be recycled at the end of its life – it can be crushed and reused as an aggregate in new concrete.

Technology has advanced to the development of reinforced concrete not only with steel reinforcement but it can  now be  fibre reinforced.

Whilst concrete is not  generally an attractive surface,  advancements have introduced imprinted concrete which can give a decorative finish.  However we at Drive-Cote have been required to resurface some imprinted concrete  finishes in order to introduce an anti slip quality to a level  not found with any other driveway path or patio options.

It is quite important it is laid correctly i.e.  the sub base, reinforcement and expansion strips for example.

Concrete can be finished in a variety of ways but as with imprinted concrete if it is smooth it can be slippy in bad weather.  There are  options though such as textured rollers and they can imprint a simple patten on the concrete.

Curing  is quite important particularly  the first 2 or 3 days  which can have  quite an impact.    Drying out of the concrete  (too fast can have quite a detrimental effect) as can the temperature.

Did you now it can take 28 days for concrete to achieve its required strength?

The Concrete Society  is very useful resource

We can resurface concrete with our Resin Bonded Aggregate and extend even further the life of your driveway, path or patio.

Concrete driveways – do they contribute to flooding?

March 14th, 2013

Concrete driveways – do they contribute to  flooding?

Current legislation changes have led to a lot of home owners believing they must apply for planning permission for concrete driveways.

Not the case.  The Planning Portal gives quite a lot of information on their site relative to garden and paving over them

and driveways and patios.

It says “You will not need planning permission if a new or replacement driveway of any size uses permeable (or porous) surfacing which allows water to drain through, such as gravel, permeable concrete block paving or porous asphalt, or if the rainwater is directed to a lawn or border to drain naturally”

If the surface to be covered is more than five square metres planning permission will be needed for laying traditional, impermeable driveways that do not provide for the water to run to a permeable area.Patio by Drive-Cote Ltd

Drainage and flooding are an issue we are all aware of that, but this extract proves that if natural drainage can be incorporated in the design then planing permission is not required for concrete driveways. This also applies to  tarmac, block paving and imprinted concrete in addition to Resin Bonded Aggregate.

In this ever changing environment that may well alter but as it stands in most projects for concrete driveways as long as thought and consideration is given to each particular development, then there should be no flooding and drainage issues.

Obviously existing and current drainage issues should be addressed  and when developing any area.Concrete driveways resurfaced

Gardens, driveways, patios and paths can call contribute to any water issues but at the same time they can also address and resolve issues.

Being within easy access of  4 counties – Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and Yorkshire we at Mansfield Drive-Cote Ltd  can address any concerns you may have with regard to you driveway path or patio.
