wet weather resin installs

Over the last few years we have posted on our website with regard to resin bonded stone and resin bonded aggregate and the possible problems with wet weather resin installs.

Over the last few years concrete has come under a lot of investigation and in spite of the harm that badly planned use of concrete can do, well-planned concrete construction can have many sustainable benefits. This is why we choose to work with existing surfaces. Not only is concrete an invaluable product it is one of the most durable building materials. It provides superior fire resistance compared with wooden construction and gains strength over time. Structures made of concrete can have a long service life. Concrete is used more than any other manmade material in the world.[ As of 2006, about 7.5 billion cubic meters of concrete are made each year, more than one cubic meter for every person on Earth
This is why we resurface existing surfaces (including imprinted,  concrete and tarmac) – the durability and stability to taking the weight of a vehicle and being suitable for a driveway.

wet weather resin installs
However, as with all works preparation is key and no matter what you read the resin industry has not come up with the perfect cure to the British weather yet!
In 2013  we said  “As with all good things there is a down side and that is the weather! Once the resin is down and you have your resin bonded path or resin bonded patio for example, that is fine. BUT when it is being installed it does need to be a dry surface and the weather needs to be your best friend for a few hours.
There are companies who say their resin product can be applied in all weathers! Well we have been installing anti slip surfacing for over 12 years, and not once have we laid our resin on a wet surface.  Resin will emulsify with water – it will go cloudy and milky and will not cure.  So couple incorrect installations with scams

This news in the paper today, reinforces the need to be careful when choosing your installer and one of the best recommendation is by local works. Find a local installer with local examples and ask these customers if their’s was one of the wet weather resin installs  and the correct answer should be no!
Resin is an extremely durable product but it need a good base , a good product and most importantly a good and knowledgeable installer.

resin stone granule sizing

resin stone granule sizing

resin stone granule sizing can make all the difference to a resin bonded stone installation. Resin stone granule sizing makes a difference to the anti slip definition and to the depth of cover.

Our most popular product is a 2-5mm granule size which means it provides the best anti slip efficacy and reinforces the uniformity of cover to concrete, imprinted concrete and tarmac.

However not all customer want the same product for the same purpose and based on the specifics of the individual job we can complete a resin stone granule sizing and advise accordingly.

This week we have completed a job in Selston. The primary requirement being to cover a dangerous slippery imprinted concrete drive.  We kid you not about the danger!  The customer had had a letter from Royal Mail saying that a Health and Safety Consultant was wanting to visit to assess the access to the property as there  had been reports from the Postman that in winter the surface and slope were treacherous.  A harness and a rope were  a consideration to get up the drive!

Our Selston client wanted a dark colour with a light border. We did recommend not having a border  as the driveway was narrow.  Putting in a border  would visually lessen the area, however our client wanted a contrast  and  on selecting from our sample board  the client made their choice.

The chosen granule was a dark grey bauxite with a silver grey granite border detail.

The contrasting colours do compliment each other and have allowed additional areas to have standout resin bonded resurfacing for  steps and a patio area as well.

resin bonded stone advantages

resin bonded stone advantages

Resin bonded stone advantages are different from resin bound advantages

We at Drive-Cote Ltd started our business on the basis that a lot of existing driveways- concrete and tarmac  – were  sound structurally  but  were not necessarily very attractive. In addition whilst no major structural damage was involved,  over the years the weather and the frost had taken its toll on the surface  of the drive or path – potholes in tarmac and shelling on concrete for example.

If your drive is damaged on the surface  then resin bonded stone advantages are beneficial to the existing concrete or tarmac driveway.

Resin bonded stone or aggregate is not permeable

Resin Bound stone or paving resurfacing is

Resin bonded stone is extremely naturally anti slip due to its texture

Resin bound paving is not as the resin encapsulates the stone

Resin bonded stone does not affect existing levels

Resin bound stone does affect existing levels

Resin bonded stone is less invasive on time and money

Resin bound aggregate installations require more preparation and groundworks and is more invasive on money

Resin bonded stone will resurface providing an ant- slip attractive durable and protective surface without the need to remove the existing.  We at Drive-Cote Ltd believe that the existing surfaces (concrete in  particular) are the perfect surfaces for a driveway.  And if it  is not broke don’t fix it.

Addagrip a large commercial company and they have details on their website explaining the basic differences between resin bound and resin bonded.  In addition their website explains that the correct surface underneath the resin is key. We believe the resin bonded advantages outweigh the resin bound advantages for householders.  This time last year we were posting about the weather and the wintertime closing in  and at this stage we  also highlighted the pothole situation

Many readers will see where Suds compliance is highlighted as a requirement but it is often a misconception that this means it must be permeable.  It does not –  it means that run off water must be managed. Oh and don’t forget is a surface is porous to allow water, then weeds can grow.

That can mean having correct falls on the surface, or drainage channels installed and yes having a permeable surface but a permeable surface is not a must, merely an option availalable.

Annesley resin bonded drive and path

October 9th, 2015

Annesley resin bonded drive and path job on the books today.

This Annesley resin bonded drive and path was made up of a  tarmac driveway and slabbs to a front path.

Decent overall condition just wanting to protect, ensure longevity of the existing surface and at the same time  the completed resin bonded works will provide an attractive anti slip  and durable finish.  You can see from the images that  there is quite a gradient and whilst tarmac is not as slippy as imprinted concrete it does tend to get a smooth finish as time goes on.

Completed in  a day  No mess  No skip  No waste removal.

Winter time will be upon us soon and the resin bonded stone will protect and enhance and particulary important at this time of year  provide an anti  slip surface.

Don’t take our word for it.  Call and ask for a free quote and to view a drive near you.

decorative resin aggregate install

The last day of September 2015 and we have a Mansfield decorative resin aggregate install to complete.

The weather this  month has been glorious affording the opportunity for Drive-Cote Ltd to race ahead with resin bonded stone installs.

Mansfield is on the agenda today.  This client who had seen one of our local projects wanted to bring additional works into uniformity.

As it stands at the moment the client had had an extension piece completed but where the two joined (the old and the new) there was a dip and an obvious difference.  The resin bonded resurfacing option  allows this to happen and we will be completing this decorative resin aggregate install today .  As the install is only minimal on depth it does not affect existing levels and falls.   In addition it actually operates like a seal preventing the ingress of water and providing an anti slip surface at the same time.

There are many benefits to a resin driveway install and anti slip is one of them.  We have just resurfaced a slippy imprinted concrete driveway due to the issues with the maintenance and concerns about maintenance.  Don’t forget virtually weed free being a major advantage as well.  Paths, patios and driveways – concrete, tarmac and imprinted concrete we can resurface.

poor resin installations

poor resin installations

Poor resin installations are a more common occurrence and seem to be a little more reported on with the ever growing new resin bonded stone and resin bound aggregate installers entering the marketplace.

poor resin installations DSCN6844 DSCN6845

However in defence not all claims of poor resin installations are as they seem .  With our resin bonded install  (using existing surfaces to provide a non permeable resurfacing option) the only requirement as far as maintenance is concerned is a stiff brush and a quick jet wash once or twice a year.  This low maintenance option can sometimes mislead visually hence the apparent poor resin installation.

We were recently called to a poor resin installation which was not as it seemed.  This client had had a resin bonded installation on his drive over 2 years ago.  The client was currently progressing a claim through the court as the installer not  Drive-Cote Ltd  we would like to point out, had not remedied the problem.  Perhaps if the company had investigated the complaint  then the claim would not have happened?

On our visit  to this Sutton in Ashfield  client he informed us that there were bald patches on the drive.

Now  a poor resin installation  can happen as resin is a very complex product and very weather and surface dictorial.   Often the resin has actually covered the required concrete, tarmac or imprinted concrete surface and if there are areas in need of addressing (in most cases)   this can be  sorted with minimal time and works involved causing no issue in the long term both visually or on the integrity of the resin.

But, in this case we found on investigation that this was not one of the poor resin installations.  What was the problem?  Why would this client think the resin and installation had failed?

This resin bonded driveway needed a jetwash and a stiff brush  That was it! As simple as that!

The client has mistakenly taken embeded dirt on the driveway as being a failing in the application resulting in one of the poor resin installations.   To the untrained eye, there were bald patches, however with a jetwash and a stiff brush no problem. Dirt removed and the anti slip aggregate which sits proud of the resin was back in all its glory.

driveways tree roots and the use of resin bonded stone

September 15th, 2015

driveways tree roots and the use of resin bonded stone

We had an enquiry this week from a local resident looking for guidance with regard to his driveways tree roots and the use of resin bonded stone.

His question was – Can we help with regard to his driveways tree roots and the use of resin bonded stone.  Unfortunately the answer to this was no not at the moment.driveways tree roots and the use of resin bonded stone

In all of our information we highlight the fact that with a resurfaced driveway –and the use of resin bonded stone  or resin bound aggregate the existing surface such as concrete and tarmac is the surface which supports the resin bonded stone or aggregate.  If this is not structurally sound then the resurfacing will not be either.

We would say most of the unsound surfaces we are asked to cover and cannot be resurfaced are not relative to driveway tree roots and the use of resin bonded stone.  They are  down to an unsuitable base.  Whether that be through age, deterioration, subsidence or simply a bad installation in the first place.

This  client had actually had the tree removed and  they had employed the services of a well known franchise Stumpbusters and wondered if our resin bonded aggregate was something we would install.

We highlighted to this client that potentially yes, but certainly not at present.  The RHS say

Be aware that the extent and spread of tree roots is extremely variable and they are unlikely to grow in a uniformly radial pattern. A useful guideline is that roots can commonly extend a distance equivalent to two-and-a-half times the height of the tree. If unsure about tree choice, always seekprofessional advice before planting

Bearing this in mind the question to consider is if the tree roots potentially can extend as much as this and the fact that the older the tree the more substantial the root growth then what happens to the ground when the roots are removed?

The Forestry Research  also states  the following which could be applied to any driveway, path or patio  as well.

How do tree roots interact with pavements?

As they grow and thicken within their limited space, roots can distort and break man-made structures including walls, pipes and pavements, causing damage to many tree-lined streets.

Woody roots thicken each year. In temperate parts of the world, the growth rings in woody roots are just as well defined as those found in the stem. This secondary thickening gradually pushes shallow roots growing just beneath the pavement ever closer to the surface. As they expand, roots can exert a force great enough to distort tarmac or even concrete, and will easily move slabbed paving. And after a surface fails, the upheaval increases as roots continue to expand. Most damage is found less than 2 m from the tree, partly because of the fast growth of this part of the root system, and also as a result of the ‘buttressing’ of roots close to the stem. As roots branch and taper, they become progressively smaller and less damaging with increasing distance from the tree. However, some damage can still be found at greater distances from the trunk.”

I think sometimes we forget that the trees were here first and that we should all have a healthy respect  for nature.  Please feel free to contact Drive-Cote Ltd for advice on driveways  tree roots and the use of resin bonded stone.

resin bound paving workings

Whilst searching through the internet (as you do)  I came across a few confused homeowners on the driveway expert  website and decided to put pen to paper (or finger to keyboard!)  to try and provide a little more insight into resin bound paving workings.

I Read with interest the threads in this piece and whilst not all information is strictly  correct it serves to make people aware of the complexities  of  resin, when to use resin bound paving workings and the need to be aware of the correct product for the correct surface and purpose.

Drive-Cote resin bonded works in progress DSCN6762 DSCN6763 anti slip path by Drive-Cote Ltd garden details by Drive-Cote Ltd resin bound paving works Mansfield

“Resin bonded and resin bound have different qualities.  Resin bound is permeable and in our opinion (14 years of installing) is not suitable to lay in general on a non permeable surface like EXISTING concrete or tarmac.  Suds compliance comes into play here as well  everybody seems to be of the belief that a permeable surface is a need and a must.  That is not the case –  what is important is to manage run off water which is not the same.   The structure of concrete and tarmac is the structure that takes the weight of a vehicle on a driveway so if you put a 20mm resin bound surface over the top then the resin bound (which if porous is less tensile in capability) then there is the potential for the resin to crack.  Frost lift is also mentioned which is a potential with a resin bound surface – if water can permeate then water can freeze and then when it thaws (as with potholes in tarmac) you get the frost heave.  Resin bonded is the product to use for an impermeable surface such as concrete and tarmac.  It is not permeable (as the concrete and tarmac aren’t) and therefore the water cannot feed through and therefore prevents weeds.  In addition to this there is no maintenance (well virtually no maintenance a stiff brush and jet wash once a year).  A resin bound surface encapsulates the stone and with the continual running over of tyres this will wear and need recoating.

Both resin installations are extremely viable but only when used in the correct place.  Any good company will offer free no obligation advice.  We are not affiliated to any company large or otherwise.  This does mean we are not reputable”

resin bonded aggregate benefit

Resin bonded aggregate benefit

We regularly get asked what is the  most beneficial  resin bonded aggregate benefit?   This one is a hard one to answer as there

are a number  of benefits  but we would say the most effective resin bonded aggregate benefit would be to be able to resurface

the existing  surface.

If it’s not broke don’t fix it!   Minimum mess!   Minimum  disruption  and no skips!

There is a reason concrete and tarmac are used as the base for driveways  (vehicular access)  and many other products nowadays

would struggle to equate to the  strength of such monolithic surfaces.  This reinforces the fact that an additional resin bonded aggregate benefit is that it is still the concrete or tarmac taking the weight of the vehicle.

Drive-Cote Ltd resin bonded aggregate

Resin bonded stone  can be completed in a day!

Resin bonded  resurfacing  does not affect existing levels

Resin bonded resurfacing by Drive- Cote Ltd uses a natural stone product and requires no sealant.

Resin bonded gravel resurfaces existing surfaces such as concrete and tarmac  products which are built for vehicle use.

Resin bonded stone  provides an anti slip and virtually maintenance free option and finally resin bonded stone is a more environmentally friendly product.  According to The Concrete Society

Aggregates form the major part of concrete and are derived from many types of rock. Granite and limestone are extracted from quarries, crushed and graded. In many parts of the UK, land-based or marine sand and gravel are available: these require some processing, such as washing and grading, before use in concrete. Washing removes deleterious contaminants such as chlorides from marine-derived materials or excessive amounts of clay and silt from land-based sources. In some cases, silt particles can be recovered by flocculation so that they can be used as part of the fine aggregate. To minimise transport costs, aggregates are processed at their source or the landing point of marine materials. The major environmental concerns of aggregate production are outlined in the Table.

Stage in aggregate processing Major environmental impacts
Quarrying and processing raw material Scarring of landscape
  Dust and noise
Some sources are in areas of outstanding natural beauty
Proximity to major centres of population
Loss of aggricultural land (or removal from use for many years)
Energy consumption; carbon dioxide emissions etc.
Delivery of aggregate to concrete production plant Fuel, noise and traffic

Actions taken by the aggregate industry include: the increased use of recycled concrete as aggregate and artificial aggregates made from by-products of other industries;  worked-out quarries used as landfill sites before landscaping; and gravel pits used for recreational water sports, natures reserves etc.  Where feasible rail or water transport is used to reduce transport impacts”

resin bonded aggregate installation feedback

We have just completed a large project in West Bridgford this week and you will see below the  resin bonded aggregate  installation feedback we obtained on completion of the works.

This client was looking for inspiration after completing a large property refurbishment and extension.

resin bonded aggregate installation feedback DSCN6643 Nottingham tarmac in need of resin driveway in need of resin bonded stone by Drive-cote Ltd tarmac nottingham ready for resin by Drive-Cote Ltd

There was a large area of old tarmac a little bit worse for wear and natural stone walling  on the perimeter.  In addition there was a stone gravel bed in the centre of the driveway.  Rather than remove this we suggested it could be utilised as a feature.  Repointing the areas of walling being a must  and in order to minimise migration of loose gravel areas, we suggested incorporating further hard standing areas creating a uniformity.  This could be completed with tarmac and the resin could then be used to bring all old and tired areas together with the new surfaces.

Our contractor  moved in first to dig out as required, lay and compact hardcore, base and top coat flush with the existing surfaces.  There was also a bullnose edge installed the length of the driveway to add  further detail.

If any of our potential clients want to read independent resin bonded aggregate installation feedback,  we provide numerous details within our information packs we send out.

The tarmac needed to be left to cure so that the oils within the tarmac do not react with the resin.

We were then able to resurface the whole area to provide a virtually weed free and maintenance free option.  In addition to this even though this time of year we do not consider slipperiness, the resin bonded stone has excellent anti slip properties.

Please find below the resin bonded aggregate installation feedback we have had from this client –  we asked as follows:

Good morning

Just to acknowledge the monies received in our account.   I have seen the pictures and it certainly looks impressive now on the entrance to  your property.  Were the lads ok? Clean and tidy and polite?  We like to check that everything is ok?  We say our resin bonded stone can be completed in a day, but obviously this is not always the case with large jobs – but did you find it a pretty quick process with very little mess or disruption?”

and the resin bonded aggregate installation  feedback was

“Hi Faith

 Thank you for your email.

I’m pleased to say that the workmen were very polite and although the work took 2 days for the main works we were still able to get to and from the house and there was very little disruption.

I believe one of my neighbours has already got your details from one of the lads. I would be happy to recommend you to any of my friends and we are very happy with result.

Regards

 Alex”

This week we are out to Denby and Selston to quote and in fact already we have a quote to complete in Nottingham as a result of a viewing at the job we have just detailed. Concrete tarmac or imprinted concrete any of these surfaces are perfect for our resin – solid monolithic surfaces.
