I wonder if this a countrywide happening? I would have to say yes it is a resin bonded aggregate demand all time high as we complete our research on the latest news, we see installations up and down the country!

We have just been so busy our posts are taking a bit of a battering. Not something we like to miss talking about, but with the resin bonded aggregate demand all time high it is very difficult to do everything and our customers come first!

We have just received an enquiry (which I don’t think will be within our area, but we are more than happy to help where we can)

This enquiry is still to be dealt with, the customer asks a number of questions which we think will be helpful if included on our site.

Part of it is concrete in covered and some in poor tarmac and part badly laid slabs as well. I was thinking to have drive sorted in 2.5 pea shingle resin bound. What sort of substrate would you need as I will be turning some of the existing back to grass area and there are some levelling issues which need to be sorted.

Is compacted a good base in the areas that need sorting? Also how thick can the topping be? We have a few cars and also sometimes turn around on the drive” To the left side is where we will have grass again on a curve from about a foot in from the drive at front to the 3rd panel up from door. We could do the substrate our selves probably due to levelling issues and tree stump removal etc”

Simon has offered to have a phone call chat, but will also answer some of the points raised. Always good to see that people don’t assume that it will work. This enquiry has quite a few considerations to bare in mind.

We have noted that there is a bit of a mix of surfaces – grass- concrete- tarmac so there will be quite a lot of prep work whatever route he takes. Whether it is for tarmac, concrete, imprinted concrete, slabs, paving or just grass, preparation is key for any new surface.

Remember not all surfaces offer these benefits perhaps this is why it appears that it does appear to be a resin bonded aggregate demand all time high. We have this week received several resin bonded customer service enquiries from out of area – Central and north London being the main areas.

It would be nice to be able to say we could serve all of these resin bonded customer service enquiries with a nice new installation. Unfortunately this is not the case.

Two reasons –

1.we can currently only provide resin driveway, path and patio installations within a 60 mile radius of our Nottinghamshire base

2.we only provide resin driveway, path and patio installations if they are fit for the purpose.

Why? Because as soon as we surpass the 60 mile radius cost can become an issue – we have to factor in distance, fuel and the weather.

In addition as we have already said we only provide resin driveway, path or patio installations if they are fit for purpose.

On chatting with one of the enquiries – he had been looking round our website and felt that we had raised a few questions for him to ask.

The resin bonded customer service enquiries are referred to our website, as we try to update with information and it can help them to find some information which we feel can be helpful. It was a business development company who wanted our views ( and remember talk and chat is free) on a quote he had recently been given. This was out of our area so we feel it was of no benefit to us to either decry or validate the quote. Merely to provide an honest answer which is what we try to do anyway.

Whilst this is dependent on the use of the surfaces – i.e. foot traffic may well be of with slabs it is not ideal for vehicles.

This information goes on to say

“Maintenance is simple as well. Asphalt ages quickly and gravel has to be raked, but because a driveway made of resin is a completely bonded surface, there is very little possibility of cracks, potholes and wear. There will never be gaps for weeds and invasive plant life to sprout up and crack your driveway. When wear does occur, the same type of resin material is required for patching”

Well there are two schools of thought, and our school of thought is the projects we work with when resurfacing existing surfaces require an impermeable product so a resin bonded aggregate drive beats resin bound.

This Ilkeston badly completed resin bound aggregate work laid on to an existing concrete driveway was fairly recent in application. The customer had complained to the company only 8 weeks after the installation but unfortunately they had gone out of business.

We took two days to repair with our specialist filler. Due to the fact that resin bound needs to be laid to a depth of 18 mm (bearing in mind the actual drive was already at optimum level for drainage and the existing surfaces) this required metal edgings to support this depth. However the actual resin bound application was inconsistent in depth ranging from 30mm (on the edges) to 5mm in most places. In fact you could rub off this resin bound driveway with your feet. One good thing with regard to this was that there was no weed growth – there was moss there however!

This company had also covered over the manhole which had in turn bonded the lid to the frame! This was almost as bad as previous job we quoted on where tarmac had been placed directly onto soil! At the time we did not think there was much chance of worse. What do they say never say never! In this instant a resin bonded aggregate drive beats resin bound. The is not to say that a resin bonded aggregate surface is the best in all circumstances. Expertise and specialist knowledge provide the necessary surface.

Resin bonded resurfacing is completely different to resin bound surfacing.

One is porous one isn’t

Only resin bonded should be laid onto impermeable surfaces such as concrete tarmac and imprinted concrete.

Paths, patios and driveways can all be resurfaced, but not all surfaces should be resurfaced.

We were contacted recently – resin resurfacing hardcore driveway question was the purpose. Can we install it and if so how much and all this for a mile long driveway!

We advised as follows

“Unfortunately your project is outside our operating area. Resin Bonded Stone may be an option for you but I would say you would find it prohibitive due to cost. As a guide £40 per sqm would be a good indicator. Based on a mile long drive at say only at 1m wide this would equate to 5280 sqm at £40 per sqm = £211,200.00 (purely guide figures here).

In answer to the resin resurfacing hardcore driveway question there are two potential options with the surface. Resin bonded and resin bound. The resin bonded is used on the roadways (albeit on a very superficial and commercial level) and is designed to resurface existing surfaces such as tarmac or concrete. The surface down at present is basically a compacted hardcore and this type of base is more suited to resin bound surfacing – which is not really suitable for vehicles and it is more expensive (£75 per sqm) Below is some information I have sent to a previous enquiry and it provides a little more background with regard to the two resins

“I don’t know if you realise but we work primarily with resin bonded and in order to lay this surface, there would need to be a concrete or tarmac base first.

Once this has been laid you would be looking at about £12600 to £15000 to resurface the area with resin bonded then.

There are two resins that are used by most companies. Some use bound some use bonded. We use the resin installation that is suitable and fit for the purpose.

For example, if you put resin bound on the driveway, then you would be using a less tensile strength for a driveway, than is really suitable. In addition resin bound driveways are susceptible to weed and moss growth and require maintenance.

Resin installations came about as a result of resurfacing roadways. It started with resin bonded which is impermeable, and provides and aggressive anti slip property. With the highlighting of permeability requirements and suds compliance, resin bound which is porous came about. However not everyone realises that the suds compliance does not dictate that surfaces have to be permeable it merely instructs the need to manage any new run off water”.

A key thing to realise is that the resin resurfacing works came first and in order to resurface, not to actually lay a new surface”

A question we very often get asked is resin bound resin bonded best choice? The answer is simple we say “There are two resins that are used by most companies. Some use bound some use bonded. We use the resin installation that is suitable and fit for the purpose”

We had a recent email from a client who said “Dear Sales We are currently doing up a house for a client in Windermere. He would like a resin driveway. The area to be covered will be between 200-300m2. It has crush down at the moment, and would need levelling, etc. Please can you give me a rough guide figure on costings, and how long before you could come and do the work?”

There are numerous factors we need to consider with regard to this and to be able to provide a cost we need to ask a few questions first. However we can provide basic figures as a guide.

Is resin surfaces tarmac the answer to our road pot hole problem as reported in the Mansfield Chad this week?

The Mansfield Chad goes on to say “More than 1,500 pot holes were repaired on the roads of Mansfield and Ashfield last year as council chiefs wage war on the problem of the county’s deteriorating road surfaces” and it goes on to list the ten most repaired roads in Mansfield and Ashfield in 2013/2014.
