Resin Bonded Gravel – The Alternative option

Resin Bonded Gravel – The Alternative Option

Resin Bonded Gravel providing  anti slip, attractive and durable surfacing  for this tarmac drive in Cavendish Park Kings Clipstone.

We were requested by the client to make good and repair with regard to the eco drain and manhole. Our client had investigated the alternatives.  Our client  knew remedials could be completed and that we could resurface the existing  tarmac driveway.  Our Resin Bonded Gravel  eliminates the need to remove the existing driveway surface but still provides the look of  a brand new driveway.  No  mess or disruption.

The  final finish of Resin Bonded Gravel provides a  uniform, attractive,  protective, anti slip, maintenance free and weed free  surface.

The 2 main   problems with this  tarmac driveway were

  • A  damaged and ineffective eco drain.  Originally when these properties were built  the system was more than adequate. The general fall of this drive was fine  and the structure basically sound.  But due to the position (to access the drive vehicles have to drive over this eco drain) it had become damaged so a replacement was required.  This then needed to be made  good.
  • A manhole built on soil!  that’s what we found! – The tarmac surrounding the manhole had deteriorated over a period of time making the area very damaged, so in order to re site the manhole we had to build up the area.

The resultant patching up from these necessary works was   –  as you can see –  not very pretty.   tarmac drive Kings Clipston remedial works to eco drain and manhiole

Our Resin Bonded Gravel provided the opportunity for an alternative to usual choices – block paving, concrete, tarmac, imprinted concrete.  These choices require removal of the existing surface.  Resin Bonded Gravel does not

The Solution  – Resin Bonded Gravel – less cost – less disruption – less mess

Our surfacing option is not only suitable for driveways it is ideal for a variety of purposes. – anti skid surfacing, Heritage Sites, Landscaping Schemes, paths, pedestrian  walk ways and treepits.

Resin Bound Paving – Does Permeability mean Weeds?

Resin Bound Paving – Does Permeability mean Weeds

Resin Bound Paving is currently at the forefront of Resin Resurfacing and Surfacing.  But should you be considering Resin Bonded Resurfacing?    There is a difference!

Resin Bound Paving – What about weeds?

I  have recently been asked by a client what is the difference with Resin Bonded Gravel and Resin Bound Gravel?

Can I elaborate?

Resin Bonded Stone

We work with Resin Bonded Stone  – it BONDS to a surface – perfect for  driveways for a number of reasons.  – It uses the existing surface – concrete or tarmac, it is only 5mm deep – so it doesn’t affect existing levels – drainage and damp proof levels that sort of thing, it is anti slip, non porous and therefore prevents the ingress of water and weeds.  It is maintenance free as well.

An ideal surface for a driveway is concrete or tarmac – a solid monolithic surface.  Our Resin Bonded Resurfacing continues to use the current surface of concrete or tarmac  as the weight bearing surface,  because it is only about  5mm max depth.  We are not replacing  the actual  weight bearing surface – it is still the concrete or tarmac.

Resin Bound Paving

or  surfacing which it is also known as  is aggregate and resin  which is  BOUND together and trowelled on. We do work with this but  for paths and patios as it is suitable  for  foot traffic.    NOT FOR DRIVES.

It is laid to a depth of between 15mm and 20mm,  it does affect existing levels  and drainage at this depth, is NOT anti slip (as the resin coats the aggregate and makes it shiny and slippy) and is porous  and therefore allows weed growth.

This  image  shows an  area we did in Resin Bound Paving  for our local Council  (paths laid on hardcore).  You can see where moss and weeds have grown.

Resin Bonded Stone  is sometimes called a scatter coat – it has actually been referred to as  chicken feed by a competitor of ours!

This is not a true or fair description.   A dense application of  aggregate is applied to the Resin which weighs down and embeds in the Resin and covers the surface thus producing Resin Bonded resurfacing.

Nothing is perfect for exterior surfaces.

  • Concrete is not very attractive and can get damaged by frost
  • Tarmac is partly porous, is subject to moss and can be damaged by chemicals/oils.
  • Block paving is subject to movement of blocks  and needs maintenance and gets weed growth.
  • Loose gravel migrates and can be slippy.
  • Resin Bonded surfacing for drives  (what we do) needs a surface to work from (concrete or tarmac).

Driveways – Local Mansfield Driveway Company

Driveways – Local Mansfield Driveway Company!

We now  have  a new website –  updated and all ready to go.  Please read here about our  driveways, paths and patios

What factors for working with driveways?

Weather for a start!  However that’s not been very kind to us this year!  But then nothing is perfect in this life!

We managed to do quite a a few jobs  last week (in between watching the Olympics) , and hopefully this week will allow for the same.

Concrete has taken a bit of a hammering over the past few years but it is still a good solid base for driveways – solid, long lasting, durable –  but not very pretty.  This is where our Resin Bonded resurfacing for driveways can comes into it’s own. Due to changes in legislation  a few years ago for new areas planning permission may be required, but this does not affect our resurfacing options.

Below are a few images (hover over and you can see before).

We were based in Mansfield and Nottingham  last week, so if you want to see some works local to you then ring or email.

Perhaps you have a question you would like us to answer?  Cost,  preparation,  maintenance?    We have also completed some artifical turf works (another maintenance free product)  Feel free to contact us.

Driveway Surfaces – Options and Alternatives

Driveway Surfaces –  Options and Alternatives

Driveway options and alternatives such as block paving, imprinted concrete, tarmac, gravel, slabs,  slate, setts, artificial grass, cellular paving, Resin Bonded Aggregate and  Resin Bound Aggregate.

Over the past few years the options have increased  but  is  due consideration being given  to our environment?

According to a recent report  by the Rac –  see report at the Landscape Juice  –    the rise in the number of vehicles and the shortage of parking spaces means millions of front gardens have been paved over to make room for cars.  Perhaps this is a major contributory factor in flooding in certain areas?

Here at Drive -Cote  Ltd we aim to work with an existing monolithic driveway surface where possible – surfaces  such as concrete, tarmac and imprinted concrete.  These driveway surfaces if laid correctly in the first place  should stand the test of time.  Over a period of time erosion of the top layer may  occur, however if the basic solid construction is there,  then why not recycle its use?   Make it low  maintenance.  This is where Resin Bonded Stone can come into effect.

Why do we work with Resin Bonded applications ?

Because if it’s not broke don’t fix it!  The soaring cost  of removal of waste and  the disposal of concrete.   Landfill issues  and the relevant legislation have all contributed  to our increase in business over the past few years.  Resin Bonded resurfacing as a driveway surface option  does not  have these implications.

Points to consider when looking at driveway surface options should include

What is the fall like – is there a camber – will that effect your existing water run off?

Should you be considering permeable options –  what about a bog garden?

Or water storage facility?    If not will you be contributing to flooding?

Do you need to be suds compliant – what does that mean exactly?

Is planning permission required?

Is there an issue with moss and weeds –do you need to ensure it is anti slip?

Do you want a maintenance free project?

Perhaps your home and garden should be a long term project not a “quick fix”.  Split  it into sections so it can be completed stage by stage.  Why not consider part diy?  Professional help will probably be necessary at some stage, but  it can be a part of your project.

As with all home and garden projects  it is important to plan and assess prior to any decisions.   Do you really need additional  hardstanding area?

Please feel  free to contact us with any questions you may have.     We don’t charge to talk to !

Resin Bonded Aggregate – How much does it cost?

Resin Bonded Aggregate – how much does it cost?

Resin Bonded Aggregate also known as Resin Bonded Stone.

How much will  Resin Bonded Aggregate  cost –  obviously an important consideration.  But answering this a difficult one.  Each individual surface and the reason or requirement  for using the Resin Bonded Aggregate  is individual.  Cost needs to be  assessed and priced on an individual basis.

Relevant considerations will be

    • Is it a path, driveway or patio you would like resurfacing
    • Is it concrete  –   Is it  tarmac?   –   Is it  imprinted concrete ?  –   Is it paving slabs?
    • What condition is it in?    –  Is it structurally sound?   –  How long has it been down?
    • Is there nothing down?
    • Is it damaged? – Is there any tree root damage to the surface? – Is there any spalling?
    • What do you want the Resin Bonded Aggregate to do  – Provide an anti-slip surface?
    • Protect, enhance and prolong the life of your existing surface?
    • Are there any manholes?   Do you have gates and does the surface butt up to a garage door?
    • Is the Resin Bonded Aggregate for foot traffic or for vehicles?  –  Or both?
    • Are there any drainage issues   (permeability may  need to be a consideration here) .

All of these points and more need to be considered before  pricing.

There should be  a slope (on most driveway surfaces) away from  properties –   by this we don’t mean a ski slope more a gradient  (something not particularly perceptible to the eye) and if drainage is an issue then this needs to be addressed.

Hover over the image and see the imprinted surface we covered

Imprinted Concrete has been a problem on some drives over the past few years. This has been due to the severe winters and the slippy aspect  presented by the seal on imprinted concrete.  This is where our  alternative of Resin Bonded Aggregate can eliminate this without having to have the existing removed.

The Resin Bonded Aggregate finish will give you a brand new look with no mess and disruption.  On a recent job we were completing  the customer made a comment –“I have been monitoring a block paved drive being completed down the road.  It has taken them 3 weeks to complete!    My final finish was finished in a day!   Admittedly it was a fairly large drive and the weather has not been  been very kind.  They could not get their vehicles on their drive during the period of work.   Skips and men all over  the place!   The Resin Bonded Aggregate works to my drive caused no disruption!”

Mansfield Charity Rider Cycles on Berry Hill Lane

Mansfield Charity Rider Cycles on Berry Hill Lane

Mansfield mum Ginny Brown is  now a regular site on Berry Hill Lane in Mansfield.   Ginny is using pedal  power  ( a kind of tandem) to raise money for an operation for  little Jake Evans.   Ginny began her cycling bonanza on 11 June 2012  and will continue with her two children until 20 July 2012.

From our base on Berry Hill Lane in  Mansfield,  Simon and the lads of Drive-Cote Ltd had seen Ginny and her children Ben and Anna,   cycling  through the  rain and sunshine and wondered what it was all about.

I caught up with Ginny on one of her 83 trips on Berry Hill Lane Mansfield.   I had seen details in our local Mansfield  Chad and wanted to congratulate and contribute to the charity for  little Jake Evans.

Ginny has used her daily routine of taking her children to Berry Hill Primary School as an opportunity   to raise money for  little Jake.  £50000 is required to pay for a procedure  for Jake,  which will not cure him but could allow him to walk independently.

As the name suggests Berry Hill Lane is  hill and a lot of effort is required  for Ginny to get to the top!

Well done!   You can support Ginny and her efforts to help Jake and his family by visiting www.justgiving.com/just4- jake

Jake is  3 years old and has a condition called cerebral palsy.  Jake suffered some brain damage as a result of being born prematurely and the money raised is for  a procedure called Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy.

Resin Drive – and How Not To Do It

July 8th, 2012

Resin Drive

Resin Drive and How Not To Do It

Below is an extract of the result of a meet we had with a potential client.  He was  asking  for help with his resin drive.  We will say here and now  that we do not know who the installer was!

“Further to our visits our findings are – the resin works to your driveway are the worst  that we have  seen!  It is apparent that the installer who completed your resin drive had no idea about what the process required.  The additional base works that he has provided also lacks any consideration for drainage and indeed appearance. It is our opinion that this resin drive surfacing  requires complete removal.  We also need to remove about 50% of the new concrete.  The  eco drain  also requires attention.  These aspects will resolve the drainage and appearance issues.

(We would suggest that the balance of the base works should be removed.  This would ensure that corners were not cut on the sub base)

Once we are back to raw ground we would propose to relay the base and apply the  resin drive resurfacing  in the correct manner

Cost for this – in excess of £5000.00. The time involved to complete would be about  1 week.  This assumes the weather is kind so we can remove  the concrete and relaying it.  The  drainage would be addressed at the same time. We would then remove all waste from your property.   A curing time of at least  6 weeks is required to allow alkalines to leach out.  The resin works can then be completed.  The time span for this being approximately 2 days”

Now we are not saying the these things do not happen.  Any product with such temperamental properties and subject to  environmental considerations such as the weather and humidity,  can be problematic.   Careful planning, product knowledge and  experienced application can be contributory factors to ensuring a successful resin drive.   www.pavingexpert.com is an excellent source of information.

Resin Driveway “before and after” example

Resin Driveway  example of a “before and after”

HOLD YOUR MOUSE OVER THE   RESIN DRIVEWAY MANSFIELD  IMAGE TO SEE PRIOR TO OUR WORKS

No need to have costly excavations.  Have a Resin Driveway using your existing surface!

Why not work with what you have.  This Mansfield  client wanted to have her driveway “upgraded” without the mess and disruption usually encountered with most standard applications such as tarmac, concrete, imprinted concrete or asphalt.

We offered this alternative.  The slate infill in the middle section  allowed for drainage and  an antislip surfacing option covered the old and tired concrete surface with minimum disruption.  The old and tired concrete strips were resufaced.

If you would like to see a local  Mansfield Resin Driveway .  Then ring or email.  Have a chat.  We  offer free no obligation quotes.  Who knows you too can have a new Resin Driveway.
