resin installed on block pavers

A recent enquiry from a  local Shirebrook  resident asking for us to install our resin bonded stone onto his existing pavers caused a bit of a quandary for us.  Why? Because this caller had already obtained two quotes for resin installed on block pavers –  one for bonded aggregate  and one for  resin bound and to install on the top of his existing driveway block pavers .  When we have enquiries such as this it is necessary to be honest whilst not sounding as though we are criticsing  others.

This Shirebrook client has  been quoted two completely different prices for resin installed on block pavers ( quite rightly as resin bonded is not the same price as resin bound)  but  the problem was  with regard to the suitability for resin on blocks and in particular when it is for a driveway not being highlighted.

We regularly say that resin installed on block pavers is a no no  for a driveway.  The porosity for a resin bound installation on to block pavers would generally not be an issue –  a permeable surface for a permeable surface, but the very fact that a weight such as a vehicle would be the concern with reflective cracking potentially being as  issue for resin installed on block pavers.

An excellent and informative website provides  a comprehensive and unbiased report  of which the following is an extract.

The reason for this is that Reflective Cracking is likely to occur with elemental pavements, and this would ruin the appearance, and the performance, of any resin-based system. Although extremely tough, the resin would be liable to crack when loaded unless it is laid over a suitable base” – the website goes on to provide more detail.

Back to resin installed on block pavers  if you are using resin bonded this  has an additional issue –  resin bonded stone is not permeable so the permeability of the pavers below is compromised.

“Both systems require there to be an existing base to which the resin system can be applied as an overlay. This base, or substrate as it is sometimes known, can be an existing pavement of tarmac, asphalt, concrete or other monolithic material that has been cleaned and prepared, or it can be a newly laid base. The preferred bases vary from product to product, but, in general either bitmac or concrete are preferred because they are “Monolithic”, that is, they are whole, single ‘slabs’ of pavement, with few, if any joints. Accordingly, “elemental” pavings, that is those made from discrete units with joints between each unit, such as block pavers, setts, flags etc., are NOT suitable for use as the base for a resin-based system.Although extremely tough, the resin would be liable to crack when loaded unless it is laid over a suitable base”

Reflective Cracking

Flags and block paving will move slightly under heavier loads such as cars and other vehicles, which can lead to the aforementioned problem of ‘reflective cracking’ – this is the phenomenon where a joint between two separate paving units is transmitted through the covering material, creating cracks and fissures in the surface.

Resin bonded stone is an increasingly popular product  for the commercial and residential sector.  Remember because the original requirement for resin was on a commercial leve so  it is well above any requirement a residential property would need.

resin drive drainage

resin drive drainage

What are the requirements of a resin drive drainage system?

It can be as simple as to ensure the run off water is managed if it is resin bonded stone or to make sure if it is resin bound stone that the substrate is permeable .

Suds compliance is not that you must have planning permission  but the  future planning is designed to reduce the potential of flooding on urban developments and this involves not contributing to possible flooding.

You don’t have to take our word for it a useful website with a vast range of expertise in the hard landscaping industry is the A guide to Drainage, Paving and Hard landscaping site.  The Paving Expert contains a mine of information on many aspects.  So if you want to obtain as much information to support  and help you make an in informed resin driveway  decision then look no further!  Want advice on a gradient for your driveway

The look no further than this helpful website.

However,  as simple as it can be  resin drive drainage can  also be more complicated especially if the wrong substrate is used for the wrong resin and the wrong purpose.

resin drive drainage information

Resin bound provides different benefits than resin bonded stone

Resin bonded stone  – “has a natural stone effect, which is decorative and aesthetically pleasing, and is available in a range of colours and aggregate sizes. The finished surface will be non-slip, durable, hardwearing and low maintenance with a life expectancy of 10 years in most environments

Whereas resin bound stone –“ Meets SuDS requirements (Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems) which is a current planning requirement designed to reduce the potential of flooding on urban developments. The open matrix of a resin Bound System allows water to drain through to the base and reduce water ponding, and this action will naturally feed any surrounding planted areas and trees”

As detailed in  this concrete and water proofing company website.

The details on this site highlight the requirement for a clear need to have the knowledge to make sure the correct  sub base is used  to ensure the correct resin drive drainage is established.

Here in Mansfield we at Drive-Cote can help create interest with resin resurfacing detail for your driveway path or patio.

create interest with resin resufacing detail

The options available for your driveway path or patio offering a  design, border or additional works can create kerb appeal or interest to your entrance

This week two jobs we have completed have involved a simple resurfacing detail for an old and tired concrete  surface and an old tarmac area that was gradually deteriorating over the years it had been down. Weather and the elements and vehicular use all taking its toll.  The concrete resurfacing  needed very little preparation work whilst the tarmac needed more preparation with remedials taking a little longer than anticipated.

As you can see from these images of a patio area we have recently completed with a little paint and a resin resurfacing install, a new and more attractive garden area is finished.   Remember we can not only create interest with resin resurfacing,  our resin bonded stone and aggregate provides a durable protective ,  anti slip and a potentially weed free surface.

Our works can create interest with resin resurfacing detail with very little effort on your part

Resin is  now a very popular surfacing option and  has recently been on show at RHS Tatton Flower Show  and a design  like this would certainly create interest with resin resurfacing detail and make the entrance to your home a stand out gateway.

The commercial sector is currently booming with building works being completed all over the country by large contractors and we have recently been commissioned to complete some works for a local school next year.  This has developed as a result of a large job we completed over a year ago for another school.  This tidied up large areas of disjointed sections creating a uniformity needed for this tired surface.

The minimum mess and disruption is also a quality not many other surfacing options can offer.  Because there are no skips and reasonable residential size areas can be completed in a day.  Don’t forget with a resin resurfacing option there is no annual seal required.  You don’t have to have a permeable surface just a surface that manages any run off water!

Resin Bonded  Gravel and Resin Bonded  Aggregate provide an alternative to the usual options  for your driveway path or patio. standout resin driveway creating kerb appeal

Would you like a standout resin driveway creating kerb appeal! If so be careful who you call!

Check there credentials – if they don’t have any –   then that does not mean they are not worthy for e.g.

  • Ask for previous works to look at – if they don’t have any then that does not mean they are not worthy?  Maybe they have not completed works in your area?  May be they are keen to complete patio works which  tend to be less on view.    Its alright looking at previous works to try and  find the potential for a stand out resin driveway creating kerb appeal, but not everyone wants all and sundry wandering about their house and gardens!
  • Check out how long they have been in business (a warranty for 15 years is no good if they have only been completing works for 2 years).
  • Do they have a landline to be contacted on and a base near to where you are?

We have recently been called out to quote for an Edwinstowe resident who had had concrete installed recently.  But oh how this had gone wrong! Not only was the mix wrong but the weather didn’t help ( it was hot and as soon as the concrete mix arrived it was virtually going off straightway).

This client had hoped that we could resurface but there was not a chance and if you think concrete is a simple standard mix then think again.  Once again the right product for the right pupose.  Even we could not help with this surface and provide a standout resin driveway creating kerb appeal.

Another of our enquiries based in New Ollerton had a path which had been installed over 40 years ago for £8 – still every useable but getting a little slippy for them.  Our standout resin driveway creating kerb appeal product could well work for this path but not unfortunately  at £8 (not even per sqm).

We have a large Nottingham job to complete in the next few weeks and this should certainly create a  standout resin driveway creating kerb appeal.

resin driveway approximate cost and advice

Received this week a  request about a resin driveway approximate cost and advice

“Dear Sirs,   I have been looking at what is best maintenance free low budget driveways to have and came across your website with some cost indications. A resin drive is definitely what I want now.

Currently I have a small concrete drive that is just big enough for my four door saloon car so the resin could go on this.  However, when upgrading my driveway I would like to make it wider for the width of my house. The additional area has small lawn at approx. 4m x 5m and a concrete path behind against the front of house wall.

Therefore the current drive is 4m x 2.5M but would become 4m x 7.5m. Would your company undertake the digging/concrete prep  of where the grass currently is, so that you can provide the area of driveway I want? Alternatively, would it be better if I prepared   the grass area so that my whole front is concrete for you?

Please advise your comments and an estimated price.  I would be looking at having this done for September at the earliest”

Quite a lot of requests and requirements  for this resin driveway approximate cost and advice.  Simon costed a few of the requirements bearing in mind the distance (about 85 miles from our base in Mansfield Notts) and replied as below

“Hello

Thank you for your enquiry.  Due to the distance involved (approximately 85 miles), it  is not financially viable for Drive-Cote Ltd  to complete the extension works  and therefore this would have to completed by a  builder local to yourselves.  The extension piece would need to be trowel finished to the level of the existing surfaces.

After a curing period of 3-4 weeks the old and the new can then be overlaid with resin bonded stone.

The cost of this based on your calculations would be £1500 approximately  for a natural (buff) finish.  Currently this is a popular finish and our current lead time is 8 weeks  from booking.

Our resin bonded stone works  allow a speedy installation (completed in a day) .  However with regard to the building works distance can be more of an issue, materials and

time being elements that can hold  works such as this to ransom making it less efficient to complete building works as far afield as the 85 miles distance you are from our base in Mansfield.

If you do want to discuss matters or would like further details, please do not hesitate  to contact us”

We have been working with resin now for a period of over 14 years and regularly get contacted for  resin driveway approximate cost and advice details.  We are more than happy to help.  Our service is not just about installing resin driveways, paths or patio’s it is about informing.

This week alone our enquiries have varied in subject matter ( can you resurface grass, we want our concrete resurfacing, how much does it cost per sqm and have been from over 115 miles to as near as Rainworth (see the images above of work we have completed this week)

concrete tarmac resin question

July 9th, 2015

concrete tarmac resin

A concrete tarmac resin enquiry has come through as follows

Would you give me a quote to lay black tarmac on an existing concrete driveway (very approx. 90m2) – plus, green tarmac under carport, again concrete with painted surface ( approx. 22m2).

Also, as above but with Resin Bonded surface please”

We have completed qute a few works as a result of questions such as this – concrete tarmac resin – and they  have required  quite bit of prep work if the tarmac is already in place on the conrete.

We replied as follows – “Thank you for your enquiry and apologies for the delay in getting back to you.  Tarmac is not our main product but we do have a contractor who we could ask to price if you wish but we would like to say we would not recommend laying tarmac over a concrete surface although we have seen this done on many occasions.  We deem this to be a temporary fix and it only provides a cosmetic makeover.  Many find that within a comparatively short period of time  it shells off or cracks.  This eventually leads to a loosening of the bond between the tarmac and concrete.  In addition I have noted you have a painted concrete surface which can create even more resistance to tarmac.

A simpler and more cost effective option would be to resin bond on the surfaces you have.  Whether it is painted (as the carport is) or  not  as the driveway is,  the resin will adhere to the concrete better than any covering of tarmac.  Also with its impermeable properties it provides a more protective and durable surface.

concrete tarmac resin

What we would do is clean down the areas and repair any cracks, potholes or surface damage.   The resin is then applied to the surface to a maximum depth of 8mm.  The resin is spread over the surface and then has a special media (chosen by you) applied.  All this can be applied in a day.

Our specialist polyurethane resin is designed to adhere to tarmac and concrete  – the resin bonded application came about as a result of being used on roadways – for thousands of cars a day- for anti- skid purposes. This is a benefit that tarmac onto concrete cannot  offer.  What tends to happen is the tarmac sits on the concrete and potentially can loosen and crumble.

Based on the dimensions provided an approximately cost would be ……. for the driveway and £………….for the car port.  We have in the past completed garage floor works similar to what you are  interested in and we have some details on our website.Resin Bonded resurfacing of garage floor concrete tarmac resin

We will leave matters with you but if you would like a free no obligation quote then please do not hesitate to contact either myself or Faith on 01623 623986.”

resin substrate requirements

July 4th, 2015

resin substrate requirements

A recent article in a Lancashire paper served to reinforce the importance of the correct resin substrate requirements and in particular driveways or where vehicular access is required .  We work with –  concrete,  imprinted concrete and tarmac. Why?  See below

The report in the Lancashire Gazette   headed    “Shared Space’ Prom facing yet more work”  goes on to say

Blackpool’s Central Promenade is to be resurfaced at a cost of £140,000 after highways chiefs admitted block paving cannot withstand the level of traffic using the road.

Work is due to begin on Sunday to lay red tinted asphalt on the stretch between Adelaide Street West and Church Street in front of the Tower – the location of the much-discussed ‘Shared Space’ experiment.

It will replace the block paving which has had to be repeatedly repaired

The report states   “Previously, resource has been invested in replacing damaged block work, but as a result of the nature of the sub-base conditions, the block continues to deteriorate”.

Sub base conditions are the key to quality resin installations and our resin substrate requirements  for  driveway areas  are, as we have said,  concrete imprinted concrete and tarmac.

These solid monolithic surfaces  provide the support for the weight of vehicles we now park in abundance on our driveways.

The report also says “ But Coun Tony Williams, current leader of the Conservatives on Blackpool Council, said the problems were caused because the block work was not laid properly in the first place.

He said: “If the council had used the right blocks in the first place and checked that they were being laid correctly, they wouldn’t need to be spending this amount of money on repairing their original mistakes”

This is another costly council blooper”

  • preparation         preparation !        preparation!

  • What do thay say in business fail to prepare and prepare to fail!

What is  disconcerting is the fact that the above statement is so true of a lot of installations in the driveway path and patio industry as well.  The key to any quality installation is preparation and the includes the need to ensure that the  resin substrate requirements are considered before any works are completed.

And finally  beware block paving can seriously damage your health!

decorative resin detailed access

decorative resin detailed access

For an entrance with a difference the various permutations available sometime create more of a problem than a help. Indian natural stone, paving, granite natural cobbles, block paving, honed limestone stabs, york paving, imprinted concrete, stone setts – the design of entrances available are only limited by imagination.decorative resin detailed access

A client of ours has had a new piece of tarmac installed recently.  The intention was to have an additional parking area.  The client knew the two surfaces would show variations in colour as the  difference between old  and new always stands out to begin with and the client was not concerned with regard to this.

decorative resin detailed accessThe difference in colouration was not the problem but where the old and new join –  the levels are completely wrong and a depression has developed.  This in turn holds water as tarmac is not generally permeable.

The new tarmac installed is a really good example of tarmac.  However the camber in the old tarmac has been butted up to the new creating a curved depression.  What should have happened is for the old tarmac area to be cut back to a  reasonable level area for the new tarmac to meet up to correctly.

This local client had seen an example of a decorative resin detailed access  and liked the idea of a decorative resin detailed access for their property. He had in turn seen an example of our work and wanted to have the sunken area addressed and made more level.  He could then have our resin  installed over the top to provide the uniformity.  However we did point out to the client that it would not be necessary to cover the whole area as cost needed to be considered and they  had already paid for the tarmac to be installed.

Our suggestion was to leave the majority of the existing which is in good condition, treat the indentation with our specialist filler to level out the join.  To then create a curve detail of resin resurfacing – approximately  a third of the total driveway in a contrasting colour.

Many benefits and uses can be appreciated by using resin on an existing surface and creating a decorative resin detailed access. Don’t take our word for it.  One of the most reputable  providers of quality products for use with resin   has information to help you chose the options or see a small selection of  our range of colours

anti slip resin drive resurfacing questions

anti slip resin drive resurfacing questions galore this week!   Questions such as

Im a gardener and have a change of ownership at one of the properties the new owners are looking to have a gravel coating put on top of a ugly block paved driveway. is this something you can do if so can pass your contact details on to them . the property is in Newton NG34

Hi,  I currently have tarmac driveway but very old and damaged my drive measures 4 metres wide and 16 metres long.  Could you give me a quote for the work please”

We have an old tarmac path on the north side of our house, increasingly difficult to keep free of weeds and moss – seen your product online, please can you email more details?  We’re in Cornwall,  Approx cost per sq metre would be good”

Whether it is the weather, or whether it is just a coincidence for these anti slip resin drive resurfacing questions we don’t know but  there seems to be an extremely high interest in resin bonded stone and resin bound aggregate  and the benefits for concrete tarmac and imprinted concrete.

We have been out to Bingham to complete works and out to Arnold later. Both these jobs required some additional works with edgings and prep work but all having the resin installed in one day.

resin driveway industry

June 15th, 2015

resin driveway industry

The  resin driveway industry is very active at the moment and this evidenced by the wide ranging enquiries we have been receiving all year. This interest in the resin driveway industry ranges from residential to commercial from pathways to forecourts and from care homes to stately homes.  There does not seem to be any hotspots (area wise)  which shows how wisdespread and more common place the use of resin is for both existing and new surfaces.

We had a recent enquiry (out of our work area)  asking for a reputable company local to them.  Unfortunately we are not able to recommend as we are not affilifated to any company withing the resin driveway industry

“Hi

Thanks for the email and apologies for the delay.   It is difficult to say  who is reputable as we have been working with resin for over 14 years now and have seen a lot of fledgling companies come and go.

Are you looking for bound or bonded?  Or do you know the difference (and there is bit more info on our site for you on resin bonded versus resin bound)  and that can have a bearing on the company you would choose.

We are an independent company and are not affiliated to any large concern or any other resin company.  So it is very difficult for us to “recommend”.  See our post on “credible installer

We do tend to say have a look locally for commercial works and see if they can help.  If not they may a man who does as they say.

Also the more you look round the more you will see examples of work.  Supermarkets use bound for the treepits for example.

There are three large national Companies  who we tend to refer people to as a starting point – www.sureset.co.uk  www.ronacrete.co.uk and www.addagrip.co.uk .

I think some of these train installers so that may help.

DSCN6410 DSCN6417 DSCN6442

We have a leaning to the bonded as our business is founded on reusing existing surfaces rather than the new install systems meaning a non porous surface onto a  non porous surface (concrete tarmac imprinted concrete). Resin bound is porous and in our experience is subject to the freeze thaw process which is how tarmac gets  potholes and concrete spalls so with resin bonded it prevents the ingress of water.

There are different qualities and different properties for each product

  • Resin bonded                                                    Resin Bound
  • Non porous                                                        Porous
  • Anti slip                                                              Additives may be required
  • Can be completed in a day                             Needs more preparation work
  • Can be virtually weed free                             Can be susceptible to weed moss and algae
  • Can be virtually maintenance                       Needs some maintenance.

I would just start and have a look more local and you will see there are a lot more resin works completed commercially so even if the installers are only  commercial they may be able to recommend a residential installer.

Ask your local highways who installed locally on the roads and they may be able to help as a lot of commercial companies work alongside residential installers within the resin driveway industry.

Remember one shoe does not fit all, so any company worth their salt will advise not sell.  It depends what your surface is, what the drainage is like why you want the Resin.

Hope that helps?  By all means if you want any more  info just  drop an email. We like to include free advice on our site, and when we  get enquiries such as yours it gives us a good opportunity to use the information on our site.
