Wet weather resin bonded aggregate installation

Wet weather resin bonded aggregate installation

Can it be done?  Wet weather resin bonded aggregate installation – is it achievable?

The simple answer is  NO!   Do not believe all that you read.

One of the biggest selling points of resin bonded aggregate also known as resin bonded stone and  resin bonded gravel (all suitable for use on a driveway, path or patio) is the fact that is uses an existing surface such as concrete, tarmac and imprinted concrete.  This makes it an extremely time saving option.  You can have a brand new surface in a day!  Not something  you can achieve with block paving, imprinted concrete, tarmac, concrete or slabs.

BUT

As with all good things there is a down side and that is the weather!  Once the resin is down and you have your resin bonded path or resin bonded patio for example, that is fine.  BUT when it is being installed it does need to be a dry surface and the weather needs to be your best friend for a few hours.

There are companies who say their resin product can be applied in all weathers!  Well we have been installing anti slip surfacing for over 12 years, and not once have we laid our resin on a wet surface.

Wet weather resin bonded aggregate installation

Resin will emulsify with water – it will go cloudy and milky and will not cure.

So if you require a good solid and quality installation then call Drive-Cote Ltd.  Chesterfield, Mansfield, Sheffield, Derby all within easy reach.  Why remove a good solid surface like imprinted concrete,  concrete or tarmac, when you can have it resurfaced.

Derbyshire  and  Nottinghamshire all within our local area.  Driveways and paths  can be  a part of your overall design of your garden.  Why not have a diamond design?  This particular client designed their own space.

resin bound paving as seen on tv

Did you see resin bound paving as seen on tv on the Alan Tichmarch garden programme – not managed to watch it yet, but by all accounts it sounds as though the resin was used quite extensively.  National televsion is always a good advertising medium! especially for an up and coming product.

We have been speaking with an interested customer with regard to a local job resin bonded aggregate for them.  The lady  currently works at a local university where resin bound paving as seen on tv has been installed.  However she has reservations with regards to this as she thinks it is not as durable as resin bonded stone and therefore is looking for the resin bonded paving options.

We have sent some details out but it would be interesting to see how the resin bound paving as seen on tv  has faired when it has been down a bit longer.   Because the area the client wants at her home needs some major landscaping completing we need to just provide information and leave it with the client.

As we have previously said we favour resin bonded because of the impermeable qualities, which makes a a stronger, anti slip weed free and maintenance free.

http://www.yell.com/biz/drive-cote-mansfield-3170440/  how about that for a recommendation!

We have also had an enquiry very local to us – Annesley –  near Kirkby in Ashfield, but without seeing the actual surface it is difficult to comment accurately  on the suitability.  The client sent us some images but it would appear from these images that it is not a wearing course, and may be too open textured for us to work with.

However tarmac can be laid on top of concrete so it may well have a more solid surface underneath.  We may get opportunity to go and have a look in the next few weeks.

This resin bound paving as seen on tv is an up and coming surface, which when applied for the correct purpose and in the right place can be a durable and decorative alternative.  Imprinted concrete and block paving for example need regular sealing to ensure a long a serviceable life.

Mansfield, Sutton in Ashfield, Kirkby in Ashfield, Clowne, Worksop, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire all areas we  can resurface your existing surfaces.  Improve your driveway path or patio with a choice of colours and finishes.  Call Drive- Cote to find a local drive

Driveway block paving sinking and ponding is this normal?

Driveway  block paving sinking and ponding is this normal?

  • Do you get what you pay for with driveway block paving ?

Always a difficult one this.  If you pay peanuts you get peanuts?  However in the is current climate everyone is fighting for business.  Therefore you may well get an excellent price but you question why is it so good?

  • How much should a new driveway cost?

Another difficult one – what is currently down, what is access like, what is the current sub base?  What surface do you want?

  • Is block paving the right surface for my patio?

One shoe does not fit all.  You would hope that anyone who quotes would assess your required works and advise based on their site visit. Do you want a maintenance free surface?  What is the surface for a vehicle or foot traffic?

  • What options do I have with regard to resurfacing

A large  lead generation company has various comments on here which are quite helpful really as it is not always the installers fault.

over 3.5 years old could be ground movement deeper ,root ,trees sucking moisture ground heave ect ,you had a good deal anyway at 3500 for 64m2 dig out base up and lay should be around 5k ,maybe you went for him because he was cheaper ,maybe he only priced to scrape off instead of dig out ,court wont do anything ,do you think currys would take back a tv after 3 years ,behave yourself”

Another installer goes on to say

the only explanation i could give is there hasn’t been enough soft earth removed and hardcore , type one metal put in, this is a major problem with mono blocking

One of the main reasons we work with resin bonded stone which is perfect for existing surfaces, is that the long standing products tarmac and concrete in particular originally used for driveways paths and patios have stood the test of time.  And if it’s not broke don’t fix it.

See one of our older posts for a little more information on the benefits of a resin driveway.

resin bonded gravel installation

Bad weather and our resin bonded gravel installation

Bad weather towards the end of last week, has caused a few delays for our resin bonded gravel installation.   However, such is the way.

On the agenda for this week  is to complete another Mansfield resin bonded gravel installation. Apologies to our customers, unfortunately the nature of the beast!  There is always a  knock on effect.  Customers we didn’t manage to finish last week have overrun to this week, but rest assured the weather is now in our favour (if we can believe the weather forecast).

resin bonded gravel installation

Quite a  few quotes coming in from Mansfield, Beeston, Chesterfield,  Lincoln and Matlock. So busy week ahead.  One of the Nottingham enquiries is a customer who has been out to view a few local jobs (driveways, paths and patios)  so has seen our resin bonded gravel installation work.

Bit of a mix  with the types of surface for the enquiries. Various seems to be the order of the week.  (Ideally concrete, tarmac and imprinted concrete are the optimum surfaces).  One of the enquiries we have not been able to help, is a Nottingham enquiry which is for paths, but unfortunately there is nothing down.  Resin bound permeable would be a possible but he was not interested in it.

There was crazy paving, but the client had already removed  the surface (one he laid over 20 years ago himself) .  The gentleman was not interested in the resin bound permeable as his sister in Newcastle had had a driveway with this and was having some difficulty with weeds. Also there was some difficulty with the slipperiness. (Something  that is not a problem with a resin bonded gravel installation.

One of our recent jobs had very kindly put an excellent recommendation on yell.com   for our resin bonded gravel installation so the hard work involved in trying to battle the weather is worth it.

Resin is a very durable product, but only in the right place, for the right purpose, for the right surface.

resin bonded aggregate resurfacing

June 23rd, 2013

resin bonded aggregate resurfacingresin bonded aggregate resurfacing

Resin and all it’s variations  is fast growing in popularity and use. Nationally it used on commercial applications such as Heritage sites, pedestrian walkways, tree pits, demarcation areas and roadways– just to name a few.

Resin  – whether it is in it’s bonded or bound state,  has a growing range of uses and applications.  Whether they will all stand the test of time is another matter.  What we do say is that we have been using Resin Bonded Aggregate resurfacing for over 12 years now.

Resin bonded aggregate resurfacing is our speciality.  It balances cost with  use, durability, quality and the fact that it reuses an existing surface like concrete, tarmac, imprinted concrete, slabs and  in some cases paving.

There are a number of companies out there – worldwide I might add,  offering a range of applications and products and services relative to resin for the driveway, garden and patio sector.

resin bonded aggregate resurfacingPorous paving being a very strong contender for the coveted first place (as far as companies preferring to install it).  This is because it is reportedly advantageous for environmental impact aspects  – by reducing the run off water.  However you do not need to use a porous paving to manage the run off water.

Impermeable paving also known as resin bonded aggregate resurfacing  comes in as a second place contender (as far as some installers are concerned).  However in our experience this is the more environmentally friendly.  This uses existing hard surfaces that are structurally sound as a base.  No waste removal.

Pour On Gravel Binder –  now this is a new one on us.  It is considered by some companies to be a solution to loose gravel.   It apparently locks gravel in place, reducing maintenance and leaves  a porous natural looking finish.  However, stability is going to be an issue here we believe. Certainly if a vehicle is to be used on it.

So if you are thinking of improving or changing your garden or driveway, path or patio, then look no further, resin  and its variations including resin bonded aggregate resurfacing could be the answer.  Remember you can have a weed free,  anti slip surfacing option for your patio,  paths and driveway with resin bonded aggregate resurfacing.resin bonded aggregate resurfacing

From where we are based in the East Midlands (the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire border) we can resurface your driveway path or patio.   A weed free alternative to the usual block paving, imprinted concrete, tarmac, and concrete options. Beeston, Bolsover, Burton Joyce, Clowne, Daventry ,Edwinstowe, Gedling, Kirkby in Ashfield, Loughborough Matlock, Newthorpe, Old Whittington, Radcliffe on Trent, Saddleworth , Sheffield, Stone, Walesby or Wollaton.  Arnold, Bakewell, Bilborough, Bramcote, Caunton, Church Warsop, Diseworth, Forest Town, Hucknall, Langwith Junction, Mansfield, Mosley, North Wingfield,Oxton, Ratcliffe on Trent, Sherwood, South Normanton, Stretton, Tollerton,Walton, Willerby, Woodthorpe.

resin bonded gravel driveways Mansfield Mid June works in progress to complete two

Weather  has been very variable over the last few days.  Two resin bonded gravel driveways being on the agenda so we have had to really develop a game plan –  and change it –  on an hourly basis.  Such is the way it goes.

Two Mansfield resin jobs on the go this week.  Very rare are we able to bring together two resin bonded gravel driveways  for completion at the same time, in Mansfield  within a 5 mile radius. Fortunately as the weather has been playing a few tricks on us  – it has been timed just right.

The first of our resin bonded gravel driveways is a resurfacing of  a tarmac skim coat which is on top of an old concrete slope.  The finish required was to protect, extend and improve the appearance  and  access to this property.

Not a large job but one that certainly  will be improved.    This surface is certainly a rough one, but as you will see when it is completed, it  improves the appearance of the driveway totally.  Our resin bonded gravel driveways option allows completion in a day.   The surface we install will offer a weed free and anti slip impermeable surface .  No  weeds will be able to get a hold!

The 2nd  Mansfield job on the agenda is a little more detailed.  This concrete driveway and path around the perimeter of the property is in a reasonable condition.  Our client was originally wanting block paving, thinking that his only alternative was to remove the existing surface.  Then he found out about our resin bonded gravel resurfacing option. They have chosen a diamond design for their driveway  which I will put images on and you will be able to see from the images.

Quotes this week have been Lincoln, Farnsfield and Ambergate.  All our clients and enquiries are  particular to their needs and requirements, but also have to be assessed individually, as the existing surface can dictate what we can and cannot do. Our resin bonded gravel driveways option is not for everyone  – only today we have had an enquiry from Mansfield Woodhouse and this client has nothing down.  However, we can install concrete in this case and whilst it may not have the attractiveness of a resin bonded gravel  drive, we use existing surfaces such as concrete, tarmac, imprinted concrete and in some cases slabs.  Due to their  solid construction ( if laid correctly) they are perfect base.  Quoting at Kirkby in Ashfield later this week, so have really been very local!  Whether it is Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire or Yorkshire call us now.  Don’t wait till the bad weather returns.

resin bonded gravel how does it differ from resin bound gravel

resin bonded gravel how does it differ from resin bound gravel

So many times I read where the difference between the two products is not recognised.  Found this which is quite an old post but it just goes to show how easily people misunderstand the basics. This blog post was on the garden visit website. Part of the article reads as follows and is  about the University of Greenwich and it’s paving with resin-bound gravel on its Maritime Campus-

Most of the new paving on the campus is resin bound and uses a small-diameter flint gravel aggregate (2-4mm). For the central roadway this was a good choice.  A bitumen macadam basecourse supports the weight of vehicular traffic. But the road is used as much by pedestrians as by vehicles and it was well worth the extra expenditure on resin bound gravel to hide the bitumen.

But I can’t see the point of having used resin-bound gravel for purely pedestrian walks or for the new car parks: (1) it costs a lot more money (2) it is impermeable and therefore works against Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SUDS) objectives (3) it does not have that nice crunchy sound you get from gravel (4) it looks phoney – like a plastic imitation of gravel (5) it is out of keeping with the historic character of the Maritime Campus – where unbound flint gravel is the traditional material“.

One of the replies goes on to correct the author

You have incorrectly stated that resin bound paving is an impermeable product, when in fact it is a permeable product. The image that you have added to your blog looks to me like a bonded system rather than a bound system.  If this is the case then you would be correct in stating that it is an impermeable product. Resin bound paving is a more expensive option, however you do not get the draw backs of having loose gravel.  You don’t have to sweep away the gravel that has migrated to other areas and you don’t usually get weed growth through the paving.  Providing you use a reputable company, with experience in the resin bound paving sector, you will not need to replace the surface as quickly as you would with a loose aggregate. One other factor is that access for wheelchair users is not restricted.  Have you ever tried to push a wheelchair or pushchair through loose gravel?  I have and I can tell you that it is not easy.  Having a smooth surface enables easy access”.

So to recap  – resin bonded gravel how does it differ from resin bound gravel – greatly.

Only today we have received a request to quote for a commercial project in Doncaster.  The architects spec stipulates resin bound paving but the contractor has asked us to quote for resin bonded paving.

Derbyshire – Buxton, Matlock, Hathersage, Baslow, Shirebrook, Mansfield, Mansfield Woodhouse, Kirkby in Ashfield, Arnold, Sherwood, Redhill, Nottinghamshire the resin bonded gravel can work on paths with a surface already laid such as concrete, tarmac or imprinted concrete.  Resin bound gravel can be too.  However, porosity and drainage requirements for example can dictate.  So when we are asked resin bonded gravel how does it differ from resin bound gravel  -we say,  what do you want the surface for, what surface is down, how does the area concerned get affected by the weather (weeds, moss and algae for example is prevalent in some rural areas) ? Is it for a driveway. path or patio?  We won’t put something down if it is not  fit for purpose. So call us now for it’s free advice!

resin bonded paving for this Nottinghamshire tarmac driveway

resin bonded paving for this Nottinghamshire tarmac driveway

This tarmac driveway with a tight turn round area was a good solid foundation for our impermeable resin bonded paving.  Our client wanted to develop and extend  the surface area.  Not by a large amount but enough to enable easy movement of their vehicle on the driveway property.

In addition part of the difficulty was that whilst the vehicle could be manouvered, access to and from the vehicle  was a little awkward.resin bonded paving for this Nottinghamshire tarmac driveway by Drive-Cote Ltd resin bonded paving for this Nottinghamshire tarmac driveway

The area was extended  by way of an additional curved detail of concrete on two sections.  This increased the width of the drive.  However,  left as it was, was not a visual improvement. Hence the requirement for our resin bonded paving

With any new surface either concrete or tarmac, a curing period is required to enable the alkais to wash out of the concrete or with new tarmac for the oils and porosity which need weathering to a small degree.

This Blidworth project, was also sealed to ensure no reaction with our specialist flexible resin compliant filler prior to the application of our resin bonded paving.

This now completed project provides our client with a regenerated surface of  resin bonded paving.   Many thanks to their neighbour for the referral

A slate drainage detail to the  side elevation was also installed to allow free draining.  Suds compliance very often confuses and complicates what potential customers believe to be a necessary requirement.  resin bonded paving by Drive-Cote Ltd Contrary to popular belief  planning  permission requirements are not a necessity.

SUDS also known as Sustainable Urban Drainage System is a  technique that manages surface water and groundwater sustainably.

One of the  keys aspect to this job is that the bulk of the surface was already in place.  If a block paved surface was required then the removal of the existing surface and the ensuing time and inconvenience  in laying a block paved drive would have been an issue.  Our resurfacing option was completed in a day.

Addtional areas completed with  a uniformity provided by Drive-Cote Ltd’s  resin bonded paving.   A weed free and virtually maintenance  free surface.

The completed job now not only improves and extends access, it offers a durable, attractive and very serviceable surface option.

  • Maintenance free
  • Anti slip

A weed free and anti slip surface which can enhance your garden. Patios are prone to deterioration over a period of time, this is where our resin can transform your outdoor space.

In this current  climate the moisture and damp is a breeding ground for weeds.   Only today June 13th have I seen the ever chanaging weather – sunshine  and showers – hail being a part of it. With our impermeable surface, if water cannot get down weeds cannot get up.  No backbreaking weeding.

The benefit of a resin driveway path or patio

The benefit of a resin driveway path or patio

  • Virtually maintenance free
  • Eliminates weed growth
  • Anti slip
  • Can be completed in a day
  • Uses existing surfaces such as concrete, imprinted concrete and  tarmac.    The benefit of a resin driveway path or patio

The benefit of a resin driveway path or patio  cannot be said of block paving and imprinted concrete!

A recent report in the Mansfield Chad reported a problem with the installation of a block paved drive

Was this a concrete or tarmac drive we could have resurfaced?  We won’t know,  but what we do know is that our resin bonded resurfacing would not create a situation like this, as it doesn’t require the removal of the existing surface.

Part of the report was that this particular installer was deemed to be a rogue as the report states  “the driveways were often of a poor design with inadequate drainage and  foundations and used weak cement to hold the block paving together”  and one of the key important aspects of a driveway is to be able to take the weight of a vehicle.  Obviously if your requirement is for a path or a patio  it may not be as relevant but ensuring the right product for the right purpose is.

Preparation of the surface is key.

Laying block paving is an art and a skill.  Sub grade, kerbs, edge courses, bedding layer, paving layer and compaction are all points to be considered.

The report continued to say “He has so far spent £500 to improve drainage on the patio but both the driveway and patio will need to be ripped up and redone.

He said: “I feel I’ve been completely taken for a ride. I’m no fool as I was once a salesman and a magistrate but I was completely taken in by his pressurised sales techniques. He came across as a professional as he had all the right equipment and an official looking van. He added that he will now investigate traders and ask to see their work”

Work was also carried out  for their neighbour who paid £3,500 for a new tarmac drive which has had to be redone”.

If drainage is an issue we can address this. It does not always require removal of an existing surface to resolve this.  Concerns over the requirements of  planning permission we can help!  And don’t forget for patio areas  in some cases we can resurface slabs.

We have been completing resin drives for over 12 years, and can provide you with examples of our work in the East Midlands – Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire areas.  Selston, Hucknall, Newark, Mansfield, Nottingham, Derby, Ilkeston,.
