concrete resin bonded overlay alternative

Concrete resin bonded overlay is an alternative to the more back breaking options if you already have a concrete or tarmac surface in place.

The many benefits of a concrete resin bonded overlay include

  •  Recycling the existing surface
  • Can be completed in a day without the mess and disruption associated with the removal and replacement of the existing concrete or tarmac
  • High anti slip properties (particularly with resin bonded resurfacing) that no other product in the market place at present can compete with
  • Choice of colours and finishes for a  concrete resin bonded overlay  (don’t take our word for it this local supplier of specialist media offer a varied selection)
  • Virtually weed and maintenance free
  • No change to existing levels with a concrete resin bonded overlay
  • No major noisy or invasive machinery or equipment is required as a hand laid process bespoke and individual projects are created. The work involved in removing an existing surface (and more so if it is a good solid structure) is time consuming, costly and physical.

This helpful post goes on to say “The nature of concrete is that it is very strong and using a breaker is the only real way of cutting it up into manageable size pieces so that it can be cleared. There are a number of different breakers available or jackhammers as they are sometimes called. Typically a builder would use a hydraulic breaker as shown in the picture, or a pneumatic breaker powered by a compressor. For DIY, an electric heavy duty breaker would be more appropriate. These are readily available from tool hire shops and you should take the time to familiarise yourself with the operation of the particular tool that you hire. Hire shops will run through the method and provide you with instructions but, make sure you ask if you are unsure about anything” confirms that a lot of physical work can be involved and the question is why when it is not necessary if a concrete resin bonded overlay is a possible.

hand laid resin bonded aggregate

At Drive-Cote Ltd our process of resurfacing concrete, tarmac and imprinted concrete provides a hand laid resin bonded aggregate installation.   Our primary installs are for residential driveways paths and patios meaning those awkward to reach spots and  awkward access areas are easily dealt with.

Recently we have been requested to quote on an area of concrete for a rear patio.  The unusual thing about this job is the fact that the hand laid resin bonded aggregate quote was for a dual purpose – as the surface was also a roof for a basement.

The client wanted a solution which would seal the concrete patio area.  Our resin bonded stone would have been perfect as being a non porous surface it would have prevented the ingress of water.  At the same time this surface would provide an anti slip and protective coating for the patio area.   However unfortunately for this customer even though our hand laid resin bonded aggregate would have been ideal, they had recently suffered a flooding of the area which had caused major damage.

They were a little too late with our quote, as had the resin bonded surface been in place it would have prevented this flooding through to the basement.

hand laid resin bonded aggregate

The client has been considering our install as it would have saved them a considerable amount of money and disturbance.  They would have been able to leave the concrete slab in place allowing it to be used as a base for the resin.

In the past we have covered a local terrace for a customer and some 10 years on this is still as good as new.

resin bonded anti slip surfacing Nottingham

Resin bonded anti slip surfacing Nottingham

Winter time is fast approaching and over the past few years we have posted on the anti slip properties  and benefits of a resin bonded driveway, path and patios.  So we thought it was a good time highlight and reinforce the advantages.  So whether you have a driveway path or patio whether it is a level area or a slope resin bonded stone will extend the life of your existing surface.  In addition it will offer an attractive and virtual maintenance free option

In January 2014 we talked about a imprinted concrete resurfacing enquiry and detailed as follows

This request stems back to a conversation we had with an enquiry over 2 years ago.  During t

resin bonded anti slip surfacing Nottingham

hat time they have been contemplating their options.  A large expanse of imprinted concrete (adjoining to the neighbours property) has been causing them issues.  They have sealed and tried to anti slip the area but so far have been unsuccessful in creating what they considered to be a safe walking area.

Whilst this surface is structurally sound and there are no issues on this aspect and even more sadly it is a new and recently installed surface (less than 5 years), it is a problem to these customers.

We have now been called in to provide resurfacing slippy imprinted concrete surfaces options for this customer.  We have yet to view the area, but have been able to google and can see straight away the issues.  If there had been an area left as a walkway then they may not be in this position

And on looking back further we also did a post in January 2013 about another imprinted concrete resurfacing job and we were able to provide before and after images.

slippery conditions beckon resin bonded resurfacing

As reported in the local Mansfield and Ashfield Chad this week potential slippery conditions beckon resin bonded resurfacing as the gritters are being sent out for the first time this winter.

slippery conditions beckon resin bonded resurfacing

The report says

This forecast means that unless there is a major change in temperatures later today. Nottinghamshire’s gritting teams will be out and about salting the main routes across the county from 8pm. For updates this winter check the @NottsCC Twitter feed. It’s the latest activity which forms part of the annual winter preparations.  All being put into force by Nottinghamshire County Council and its new joint venture company Via East Midlands. Garry Chadburn, team manager for electrical and environmental maintenance for Via East Midlands, which is managing highways services on behalf of Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “Unless temperatures dramatically rise, it looks like our gritting teams will be making their first run of the season tonight”.
The report goes on to provide

Gritting facts and figures:

  • The end of March is the last official day when the county’s gritting teams are on full 24/7 standby but they remain on part-standby until mid-April when the danger of ice and frost is fully past
  •   In all, the County Council gritted on 69 days last winter, between October/November and April. It completed 71 runs on main routes and three runs on severe weather routes.
  • The County Council only salts A and B roads, heavily trafficked major roads and many main bus routes. It only treats residential areas where they fall into the other categories – no council does as the priority is to keep the main road network open.

This has been reinforced by a local enquiry as the slippery conditions beckon resin bonded resurfacing.  The client has an imprinted concrete surface and has found this extremely slippery over the past few years.  In addition the need to maintain the surface with a sealant is actually worsening the surface and as a result of this the slippery conditions beckon resin bonded resurfacing for them.

We have over the past few years notice an increase in demand for anti slip surfacing  and always at this time of year.  This is not particular to imprinted concrete though  there has recently been the need to work on a tiled external surface.  However if you are thinking about the winter and the issues please give us a call for a chat.

Drive-Cote Ltd resin bonded resurfacing company Rise Park

Drive-Cote Ltd resin bonded resurfacing company Rise Park

Drive-Cote Ltd resin bonded resurfacing company Rise Park completes this unusual resin bonded gravel quote works we wrote about in August of this year. In the clients words “wow what a difference”

Just to recap the external surface was floor tiles which had become a bit of slip trip hazard and  we at Drive-Cote Ltd a local  resin bonded resurfacing company Rise Park intend to strip back all of the tiles and possibly save for reuse internally and clean up the concrete base.  We would then recommend a curing time for the base to dry out naturally before any further works are completed.

Drive-Cote Ltd resin bonded resurfacing company Rise Park resin bonded resurfacing company Rise ParkOnce dried out we could then use the base as a surface for our resin bonded stone installation. Remedial works completed we will then seal the concrete prior to any install.

The client had decided to have the works completed as not only had the loose tiles become a bit of a trip hazard, the actual walking surface of the tiles was extremely slippery.  Coupled with the clients increasing restricted mobility and the need for a low maintenance surface.

As we have talked about before whilst this is a worst case scenario uneven and slippery surfaces can create real issues  which is  now being replaced!

Whilst  the weather continues to be kind we have been able to cut down on our waiting list and complete works ahead of schedule.

This  Drive-Cote Ltd resin bonded resurfacing company Rise Park completed the project within budget and before the expected date. Another anti slip, and virtually maintenance and weed free option.

Please note not all surfaces are suitable for our resin bonded stone and not all purposes suit our resin bonded stone.  As an extremely anti slip surface, it is not suitable for playground purposes such as for small children and we would not advocate it.

informative resin driveway company

Informative resin driveway company is what we at Drive-Cote Ltd aim to be.  We pride ourselves on being honest.  Not only in our projects but in our information.

We do not profess to having  the perfect solution to a problem you may have but what we do try and do is offer honest answers and be an informative resin driveway company.  We pride ourselves on posting as much information as possible to allow home owners to make informed decisions.

We have recently been contacted by a homeowner who had a few question with regard to a cold call to resin his driveway.

Informative resin driveway company

And as part of our informative resin driveway company policy we provided  as follows:

Homewner

“ I have just received a quotation from a “cold call” to resin my drive & paths total square metres of 176 onto a good concrete drive and sound paving slabs. £7,000 to include some blocks next to a lawn.  Is this a fair price or are they missing something out please. What would be your approx price?”

Drive-Cote Ltd

Thanks for the email.  I will be honest  we have not heard of them in the resin industry, but there are lots of companies popping up. So it  could be a new company or perhaps it is a different arm to an existing company.  That aside have they quoted you for resin bonded (impermeable)  or resin bound (permeable) do you know?

Homeowner

Good morning Faith, Thank you for your reply. All I know is that they put liquid & aggregate in a mixer and then lay it by hand on the drive. I trust this will help you with providing an approx price. Kind regards”

Drive-Cote Ltd

Thanks for the info and apologies for not getting back to you sooner. If the company use a mixer to agitate the resin and aggregate together, they will be installing resin bound gravel.

We would not put resin bound (permeable) on an impermeable surface (concrete).  The idea with resin bound is that it is classed as porous paving which is advocated by a lot of the local authorities as it can manage run off water from driveway and hard landscaping areas.  However the concern we have with this is that it is important to establish where the run off water will go once it permeates through? If it sits between the two surfaces then it has the opportunity to cause problems in winter time with the freeze thaw process.

The resin bound installation  you have been quoted for appears to be priced at just under £40 per sqm.  For resin bound  this is an extremely “good” price so a few questions needs to be asked in our opinion.  If it is a start up company do they now what they are doing?  Have they priced it correctly?  On the other hand if it is a local small business, they may be able to price this competitively to keep a business running.  Or it may not be a very good price in the long run.

We have been installing for 15 years now and our price for completing the works in resin bonded (not bound) would be approximately  £45 per sqm.  ( 176 x £45 = £7920.00 )  Resin bound works under normal circumstances would mean removing the existing surface and then to have resin bound laid onto a compacted hardcore base.  This would be about £60 per sqm (176 x £60 = £10, 560.00)  with the additional cost to remove the existing concrete and dispose of the waste.

Our suggestion would be to ask further questions for eg  ask where they are based?  What about the  about the porosity for eg. Installing onto a concrete surface?  Also if your existing levels are fine, then laying resin bound onto the concrete means an additional surface  depth of approximately 18mm which means it would sit proud so edgings may need to be sorted (although you talk of block paved edges so they could be looking at rebedding these to accommodate this).

Resin bonded which is what we primarily work with  is applied differently and designed to work off existing surface such as concrete and tarmac and as such resurface.

If its not broke don’t fix it! Is what we say.

The reason we work with concrete and tarmac is that it is pretty tough stuff. Used on roadways and for house building and footings.  Our product resin bonded stone is not designed to be a stand alone product.  Resin bound is a porous product and potentially less tensile than concrete and tarmac and if used as a stand alone surface, we would question the capability to withstand a heavy vehicle for example.

You need to investigate further with regard to this costing and any credible company should be able to justify and qualify what they do and their price.

Hope this helps but if you need any further info then please do not hesitate to contact us.  We are not here to condemn any other company but we do try to be an Informative resin driveway company ”.

So if you live in Stonebroom, Morton, Shirebrook, Oxton, Southwell, Kirkby in Ashfield, Chesterfield, Hasland, Arnold or any other area local to Mansfield where we are based call Drive-Cote Ltd  and get honest answers to your driveway path or patio problems from an informative resin driveway company.

Remember block paving, concrete, imprinted concrete, slabs and tarmac no all surfaces should be resurfaced.  Resin is not the answer to all surfaces.  However resin bonded stone can offer an anti slip, durable and virtually weed free and maintenance free  resurfacing alternative to having the existing surface removed.  Free quotations.

Drive-Cote Ltd resin bonded scatter coat system benefits explained

October 16th, 2016

Drive-Cote Ltd resin bonded scatter coat system  explained

Over 2 years ago we did a post on our website with regard to the Drive-Cote Ltd resin bonded scatter coat system  and how important it is to highlight the unique benefits that our system has over the resin bound system.  Anti slip properties for example are far more effective in the bonded system.  Why?  because the aggregate used sits proud  causing the surface to be more aggressive in its properties.

Drive-Cote Ltd resin bonded scatter coat system

As quoted on the pavingexpert.com website ( a mine of information on many other surfacing options) “The  qualities of resin bonded surfacing (also called the resin bonded scatter coat system)  is eminently suitable for a wide range of surfacing projects where an attractive, gravel-like, natural-looking surface, with excellent anti-slip properties is required. Although it is proving to be a popular choice for driveways and patios, it is also widely used in the commercial sector for use on car parks, footpaths and cycleways, shopping malls and leisure facilities, schools and play areas, and is a market leader for use on steps, ramps, balconies, footbridges and other areas that require a simple, low-weight surface with a high level of slip resistance. Its use is not limited to outdoor applications, though – it is equally suitable for indoor applications, such as retail areas looking for a more natural flooring, for atria, corridors, factory floors, stairwells, etc”

fencing detail for garden project

Our post in February 2014 Anti slip highlighted

– scatter coat resin bonded stone is anti slip – the angular non coated aggregate provides excellent adhesion and anti slip properties.  Resin bound stone provides a shiny surface as it is a covering for the stone.  This can be “anti slipped” so to speak but is nowhere as effective as the  Drive-Cote Ltd resin bonded scatter coat system.

The current climate includes being green, climate friendly and suds compliant. Our scattercoat resin bonded stone meets these criteria.  It is green as the polyurethane resin we use is non toxic, uv stable, does not require the removal of the existing concrete or tarmac.   Suds compliance  does not mean a surface has to be permeable, it means the run off water needs to be managed correctly.

Our research proves  that once the difference between the two  is clarified to the customer and they already have an existing surface, that they choose our scatter coat resin bonded stone.

If you don’t believe us call us now and ask for  local examples – Chesterfield, Sutton in Ashfield, Kirkby in Ashfield, Mansfield, Ilkeston, Ripley , Heanor.  Our resin bonded can provide a unique, attractive and durable protective surface.   Virtually no weeds and no mess .  We have recently been recalled to a property to complete the paths after completing their drive earlier on in the year.

Mansfield Ashfield, Stonebroom, Danesmoor, Heanor, Chesterfield –  just a few local areas we cover.

Concrete tarmac or imprinted concrete we can resurface with our resin bonded stone.  Call Simon or Faith for a free no obligation quote.

tarmac resin resurfacing East Midlands by Drive-Cote Ltd

If its is not broke don’t fix it!  So if your tarmac is still sound don’t remove,  reuse it!  Tarmac resin resurfacing East Midlands.

tarmac resin resurfacing East Midlands

We have been working with tarmac resin resurfacing for over 15 years .   Why tarmac resurfacing?  Well  if you really considered the work involved in installing a tarmac drive or path you would understand why we like to work with tarmac. (Concrete too but we are not talking about concrete today).

Excavation -after the setting out  work is completed, the ground is cleared and excavated to formation level

Laying Edgings -necessary to retain the tarmac at a free edge as crumbling and falling apart is a potential especially when vehicles are allowed on the surface

Sub Base- good solid and well compacted

Regulating – to level areas where possible

Binder Course – The  first of the two tarmac layers used in a typical footpath or residential driveway

Surface Course – Finally the surface course and then completion and making good.

All this points are important to ensure the longevity and durability of your tarmac driveway, path or patio.  Which in turn means that some 20 or 30 years down the line you would be able to look for a tarmac resin resurfacing quote from Drive-Cote Ltd!

tarmac resin resurfacing East Midlands

Common sense should tell us that if  you want to stand a vehicle on a surface it needs to be a good solid base and when laid correctly that is exactly what you will get if your installer applied best practices for driveways.

Tarmac resin resurfacing of the resin bonded ant slip surfacing has been used on major roads for the last 20 years.  For demarcation purposes, anti slip purposes and decorative requirements.tarmac resin resurfacing East Midlands

Tarmac and concrete have long been the product for durability, stability and for solid quality tensile strength.

resin bonded specialist installs

September 26th, 2016

Mansfield resin bonded specialist installs by Mansfield based Drive-Cote Ltd

We have provided resin bonded specialist installs for over 15 years now and every time we finish a job it feels like a job well done!

Not only from the satisfaction of completing a transformation but for the fact that one more of our  resin bonded specialist installs will extend and protect an existing old /tired and damage surface. In addition to this the finished result is an attractive, durable and anti slip surface.

We have a gallery of completed jobs showing the “before and after”.  These can show you what a difference a day can make if you are looking to change your driveway path or patio.

As a local business we pride ourselves on providing value for money.  We believe that using a local business for resin bonded specialist installs can offer better communication, a personal service and a more realistic install time.

Using tried and tested techniques and reliable suppliers we can be confident with our product.  Resin is an extremely sensitive product if not handled carefully.  Moisture in the aggregate can create white patches and effect the efficacy of the install for eg if the incorrect aggregate is used and it has not been cured adequately. These white patches indicate this but sometimes can take a number of weeks to show.

We always use dried aggregates to mix with the resin material from our specialist supplier to ensure that no moisture is in the aggregate.

The resin is obviously a key ingredient and a substandard batch can create additional issues such as poor quality adhesion.  However that is not to say that nothing is fool proof, and things do sometimes go wrong.  Our ethic is that if this does happen on the rare occasion then remedying the issue is a must.

Resin bonded stone requires virtually no maintenance and provides an anti slip surface.  An attractive and durable addition giving you kerb appeal.
